  1. Pretty much given up. Hegemony's day is passing, people are not interested in smash and grab games, but when something is too complicated they aren't interested either. Having a mod is a necessity, but no one is ever happy with the cards they are dealt. Its kinda realistic...people don't stay in control of a country forever, and where mistakes make a country unrunable... But in a game you don't want to be stopped by anything, you just want everything to go your way. The game is too long to not be invested, and the turns are too short to get involved. Inevitably people disagree over issues. So yes, Hegemony's day is passed, for me at least. I join those such as Ross and Nex who remember the good old days, but know that there will never be a return to them...you cannot walk twice into the same river.
  2. Grim, I don't think it would...for three reasons: 1) Space caters to an entirely different type of roleplay...It is narrative, and though it seems redundant to say, the players more or less make up the story as they go along, with just direction from the GM. 2) I would like to play a game set in Space, rogue trader lets me do that. 3) Space caters to a different audiance, running at different times and having different themes...I mean Space tends to be very 1 system orientated, very often focused on the immediate surroundings for numerous sessions. That said, I have been thinking about possibly making combat more structured...IDK yet. If there are no objections the first session would be Monday, and I will start at 4, and run untill late, as I am aware some people have other commitments. I will post the thread tommorrow, if no one has said anything.
  3. Ok, lets explain the progression: Spell check: Type in 'Their is a mna' It will correct 'mna' to 'man' but ignore the 'their' Search Engine: Type 'their is a mna' It will correct 'mna' to 'man' and 'their' to 'there'. Is Spell Check intelligent? No. Is Google/Ask intelligent? No. Neither program has a clue what the data says, it just knows that the information(note the difference), when converted into data, does not match the parameters that the data is supposed to. It then checks this data against data stored in the database, and displays information for the user. Cleverbot is merely a more advanced version of the same thing. It look at the sentence, applies the laws of grammar and spelling, and then provides feedback based on related information stored in its database. So if I said: 'What is Communism?' Cleverbot Said: 'I don't know what that is' I say: 'Communism is where everyone is equal but some are more equal than others' Then Cleverbot files that information away as: [is where] everyone is equal but some are more equal than others. Keyword: Communism, Defination Why? Because the English language is built on a foundation of rules. 'Is where' relates to defining something, it is not the defination itself. Repeating the word Communism is fairly redundant. Then regurgitate it when there is a close match. For example: 'I am a Communist' Cleverbot: 'Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others' Thus appearing intelligent. Alternatively: If I said: 'I am feeling like a troll today' Then a sufficently well programmed computer would be able to break that down into: Subject: I Verb: Feeling Adjective: Troll As such it could quickly scan through those three words and discern I probably don't mean: Iodine, touches, sing. OR Ego, Think, Move Nimbly. What is more likely is that: Perpendicular Pronoun, Percieves, Person Who Lives Under Bridge Why is this? Well, quite simply, there are relatively few times that 'Iodine touches singing' occurs in conversations. As more and more time goes on it associates things more readily, since there is a higher percent chance of x following y....This can be seen most readily with the Pokemon Theme or Still Alive...Since you are unlikely to say: I wanna be the very best! Like no one ever was! To catch them is my real test! To Train them is my cause! In any situation other than when you are reciting the pokemon theme tune. And there are times when you say 'I wanna be the very best' in reference to something entirely seperate, and it associates with 'Like no one ever was'. ... It is not intelligent, it is an illusion.
  4. ....the storage requirement would be so tiny. Each letter is worth 1 byte in Notepad...so 1,000 letters is 1 kilobyte and 1 megabyte is 1,000,000 letters, 1 gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 letters. I can host 8 Gigabytes of storage on the internet, for free, or I can store 1 TB for £25...thats 1 Trillion letters...law of averages that is 250 Billion words! If £1 buys 10 Billion words then its not a massive amount...now is it?
  5. If only there was some sort of collection of words, bound in some sort of a book, which would define all the words. Oh, a Dictionary. Since Mathis isn't a known word it is likely a Name. And humour just shows that it is programmed... I mean, its like going to a book and going 'This book is so intelligent, it says all these intelligent things!', just because someone is pointing to words in the book and you are only reading those words.
  6. Sigh... Have you ever played a roleplaying game? I find they often include your name. The only significant advance it has made is identifying a small dialogue chain...Or, more likely, it is just programmed to take a sentence like 'Mine's Mathis' as an Idenitification line...since you are unlikely to say 'Mine's Mathis' to anything else... I am vaguely impressed by the programmers...thats about it.
  7. Angry Scotsman: Back in my day if you couldn't see all that good you just got on with it! Allergies and Blindness didn't exist until the 1950s!
  8. ...Americans and European History do not mix. WW1 was never meant to happen. That was the one with the Kaiser. WW2 was about levensraum and crushing communism....No Kaiser.
  9. On the lighter side....I have been thinking about Space. Anyone have any opinions on it? If I started running it...Hegemony will obviously have to end. Also, three nights a week will tread on someone's toes...I am happy to do two or three. One is too few(Glutton for Punishment that I am =P) and four is too many.
  10. Nex, these things resolve themselves over time, but until they do you will have the urge to discuss them with people (Or silently think about them). Important thing is to make sure what happens over the next few days doesn't end up having a long term effect. By this I mean two things: First, some people get drunk and do something stupid...either killing themselves or doing something regretful. Second, some people come up with insane theories about the world (aka me) and they make some things better, some things worse. In any event, your a good person.
  11. It depends how good the teacher is...I find that if you have a rubbish teacher then a page photocopied(by hand) from the text book is worth five pages researched and cited. However, it may be that in Britian we don't get tests every other day, so the teacher has more than five minutes to read the test, as such isn't terribly interested in how well presented it is, but rather the content. Or, of course, it might just be that I just had teachers that placed a very low emphasis on handwriting...though, since it is reasonably terrible, I did go on numerous courses to improve it, as their request... End of the day(and coincidently end of my schooling period) when we joined classes with the girls, I consistantly scored as well as, if not better than, most of the girls...And girls tend to have better handwriting...so again, either teachers were simply not that fussed about handwriting...the girls were not that great(Possible, not because they were girls but because they had been taught to photocopy, by hand, from the book) or some other thing.
  12. As long as your handwriting is basically legible improving it only gives you more confidence. Or if you are subpar it improves your grades slightly...but if you are actually good at the subject/s then handwriting has no actual impact. And for some people, me for example, it isn't possible to improve your handwriting...and trying develops you into a person like me, who refuses to try things that don't have a definate outcome, which is of the greatest detriment when finding accomodation, looking for love, job hunting...hell, anything that involves other people.
  13. Ico, if Retech hasn't alreadt badgered you into playing, you should play, I lost 9 out of 11 games against Retech(before he spent the day playing the game), so we are probably around the same skill level =)
  14. Thats alright, I would just send my peasent army to kill them.
  15. I assumed power over a specific emotion would be more powerful than general emotional control
  16. Can I change my character to have power over Guilt?
  17. Tim, power over Gravity. Can't go wrong with Gravity.
  18. Ok. So... We have these 5 slots, which we can't add to because of some reason(Stops OP). The first slot is an affinity slot, defining how our abilities manifest themselves. The second slot defines an effect. The third slot modulates that effect to be better at one thing or other, and worse at something else. The forth slot modulates the first two chips The fifth slot modulates the effect again. I think it might be an idea to roll slot 5 and 2 into one slot, since they do the same kinda thing. Slot four, means rather than carrying around Shield, Area Effect and Resistance type 2s, you could just carry around area effect and the three type 4s, and these would modulate the area effect from Explosion(Offensive), Shield(Defensive) and Resistance(Passive). Overall I think it is rather creative, I am just concern slightly since guns and swords pale in comparison. I mean, are we going to run around shooting guns 99% of the time and then occassionally fire Death(1) Wide(3) Beam(2) Eyes? Or will we rarely have any recourse to use weapons because we can run around with Seeker(3) Fire(1)Balls(2) flying from our arms 24/7? My other main concern is multi-threading(Aka everyone has their own adventure) is either very slow or very complicated...or both. And in those circumstances you may be hard pressed to remember all of the various weapons people have.
  19. Co-Modding doesn't work, in my experiance, because things turn out differently under different people...so unless two people are rather similar, it can lead to confusion. Just playing Two Worlds 2, and they have this card based system for Magic...Could be another alternative, since the cards are put in amulets and each amulet represents a single spell. So you can customise your spells using cards, without throwing the gates open and allowing magic to be the go to answer for everything. For example: Fireball would be: Fire+Missile+Fire+Area Effect As your mastery, and number of cards, improved you could add more fire cards to increase its power. I guess we would need: Tool, Missile, Spray, Area Effect, Summoning, Protection, Enchant...and then the nature/whatever cards. Creating new cards should be possible, but should be a quest in itself...and cards should not come cheap, or be found in a huge deck or something.
  20. =P They did tell you on several occasions how things work. But I understand what you are saying...but if it was as simple as saying 'I want this, how do I do it? And what problems will that lead to, and how do I solve them?' Thanks, can you just repeat the last question each year and do the advised actions.' Then its not terribly fun for anyone.
  21. I agree. The rules are subjective, so you can't rely on them, so you are forced to make less than perfect decisions, leading to less than perfect results...ect...ect... Just like in the real world.
  22. Nah, if we followed the rules precisely you could screw over all the diametrically opposed countries, apart from Chile and, to a lesser extent, Bolivia.
  23. *rolls eyes* Because in the real world there are rules which can be followed which always give the same results. Also, and not to put too fine a point on it, reasonableness is relative, and since everyone has the same results when they try to do what you did...you should really untwist your knickers.
  24. Care to explain your logic?
  25. Mmmm, Hegemony 1 was way too long and way too long ago.
