Emo
"Tends to single people out..." "To dull to understand things" Heehee...if you met a clone of yourself, one of you would kill the other  Arguments against emo: Lousy musicianship (3 chords, bad voices, etc.) Encourages suicide / depression / bad behavior / whatever Bad attitude. ^^Every single argument in that list can be applied to any genre of music, if you pick the right song. I like Less Then Jake a lot, but I'm sure there are ska bands which whine a lot, play two different power chords, and encourage suicide. Goldfinger is sorta ska, and they have some pretty stupid songs. Half their albums are about getting dumped and crying about it. I like (some of) Eminem a lot, but he's got an awful attitude and his musicianship is absolutely abysmal, just like most rap. I like Metallica a lot, but some of the time they rely heavily on power chords and the hard metal attitude. I'm sure many people find that extremely pretentious. And most metal bands that are absolute posers. And we all hate posers. I like REM, but "Try Not to Breathe" sounds a lot like suicide to me. And if you want to talk about being whiny...this is an excellent band. As these examples show, any genre you pick can be hated for some reason or another. The only reason you hate emo more than the rest is because the attitude seems more obviously pretentious to you. But as stated earlier... I couldn't have put it better myself, MyPurpleCrayon. There is no genre that deserves to be hated, they all have their ups and downs. Emo is no different. You seem to have just decided to hate it because you heard a song somewhere that was really whiny, and it turned you off the entire genre. I'm not saying go out and listen to each song to make sure you hate it, I'm just saying that there's no reason to hate the genre just because you don't like its particular attitude. Btw, MyPurpleCrayon, since I am singling you out (although I don't want Poopingman to be left out), do you hate the song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"? I hope you're enjoying this argument as much as I am. Seriously, I'm not a very hateful person, so keep the replies coming. This is fun. :)

I listened to Stairway to Heaven for the first time today
Is it just me of is that maybe just a tad wierd? Good song, yes...But...I don't wanna be mean or anything but...Yeah... i agree. I can understand gettin goosebumps, but Crying seems a little over-the-top.. Sometimes, when you're really tired, even if you're not particularly upset, it doesn't take that much to make you cry. Well, maybe not you specifically, but some people are more sensitive than others. Or more emotional than others, or whatever you want to call it. Hope it never gets old for you, kirbybeam

Emo
...and no one likes rock except rockers. Therefore, rock sucks. So you made this thread specifically to bicker with the first naysayer? Hell, I'm a professional arguer, I'm up for it. Emo sends bad messages, have you ever interacted with an "emo" kid? For one to say this is something to "not worry about" it simply defies all logic. After all, there IS a reason everybody hates the genre and its followers......you know. Yeah, emo is a bad influence and we should hate it. But then again, we should hate all these other genres because they are also a bad influence... A lot of Metallica songs sound suicidal, like Fade to Black, Nothing Else Matters Champagne Supernova - Oasis, encourages alcohol abuse Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - The Beatles, need I say more? Myles Davis (jazz trumpet player) was a heroin addict... Kurt Cobain actually committed suicide... What kind of music do you listen to anyway, Poopingman? And btw, how much does it pay being a proffessional arguer?

Modern bands/artists that will be remembered in lets say...
You do realise that many people said that about rap music 20 years ago. Similar things were said in the early days of rock and roll, and the same with the blues and reggae etc. Just because you personally dont enjoy listening to a genre of music doesnt mean its just a fad, any artist of quality from any genre will be remembered in some way. Yeah, I think Eminem and Tupac will definitely be around in 50 years. Songs like "Changes" by Tupac or "Lose Yourself" by Eminem practically define their genres. They are about rising up from the street, and they don't need "big booty girls." That message will still be relevent in 50 years. (btw, eminem's last big album, "Encore," was mostly just mainstream junk, so that probably won't stick around. But stuff from the SSLP, MMLP, and Eminem Show is distinctive and lasting.) 50 Cent and Gwen Stefani are obviously passing fads, though. Just like The Backstreet Boys. I dunno about Snoop Dogg :? As for Marlyn Manson, I don't think he will ever be remembered as anything more than an oddity. :? I bet metallica will still be around, though. And although I think Coldplay is very good, I don't think it's going to stand the test of time. Clocks might be around for a while, but the rest will probably be forgotten. We'll see

Alternative to Rock Paper Scissors?
Where's the dynamite? I always used to play with dynamite...it beats rock but loses to paper and scissors. Which makes the game lopsided, but hey. I was young at the time

LAN Party time! With Pics!
Yeah, Counter Strike has a huge population of internet punks who think they can say anything because no one can see their face. That's the advantage of a LAN party, all trash talking has to be for fun, because at any moment your opponent might drop the mouse and come get you for real

Putfile says goodbye to Singapore
Hanging is still sanctioned within the US. As to refusing to heed diplomatic requests, let's not drag up the whole Iraq invasion :P Of course not  Regardless of the politics, I just like to see a company doing something besides just focusing on money. At least they're taking a stand.

LAN Party time! With Pics!
Our record was something like 20 people, at least ten computers, all in one room, all playing counterstrike, while a projecter played Scarface on the wall. We very frequently had 4 on 4 going last spring. Pretty sweet, but I have to say, it was more fun when we all jumped up, ran outside, and played ultimate frisbee for a while

SAVE Tookie
1. I like Green Day. 2. I don't believe George W. Bush is evil. I think he wants the best for his country. 3. I believe George Bush is a terrible president. 4. I agree with you: Tookie should be executed. Although I am on your side in this particular debate, I think you are making incredibly obtuse generalizations. Not everyone who disagrees with George W. Bush also believes that he is evil. Not everyone who listens to Green Day considers themself a liberal. You're right about Tookie, but man, you need to open your eyes to the fact that nothing in life or politics is so black and white as us vs. them, or red states vs. blue states, or americans vs. scumbags. --------------------------- More on the topic of Tookie, here is an editorial from the Boston Globe (one of the most notoriously liberal newspapers in the United States). It explains why Tookie should not be spared just because he claims to have reformed. I put the most important parts in bold: If Tookie truly is reformed and deserves to be spared, maybe he should help the police fight against the Crips. Maybe he should at least admit to his guilt. Naw, this guy was sentenced to death for a reason: he was a brute and a murderer. As this article shows, I really don't think he has improved enough to remove him from death row.

Putfile says goodbye to Singapore
Naw, you guys are all missing the point. Putfile can't hope to change Singapore, and they know that. They're just a company, they don't have any international power. This is just a statement. I respect that. Maybe it is bad policy to mix politics with business, but in this case I am on Putfile's side. I am not against the death penalty, but hanging is a bit extreme. As they say, it can take 6 minutes to kill the victim. Also, I don't know the specifics of the case, but it appears that Singapore ignored international efforts at diplomacy. I'm sure there is more to the story, but basically they hanged a foreigner despite international pleas. Singapore is thus at fault two different ways: in using a barbaric style of execution and in refusing to heed diplomatic requests. This is clearly Putfile's view. Not only that, but they can afford to cut off service. Now, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that Singapore goes very heavy on their math/science/engineering, so probably there are a fair number of internet nerds who use Putfile. This will come across to them as a strong statement, and maybe awareness about the issue will be raised a little bit. The population as a whole might not hear much, but it is foolish to say that Putfile's actions will be completely ignored and ineffective. Maybe it's bad business sense, but Putfile is actually taking a stand and making an effort. To me, it shows that Putfile is not just "in it for the money," like everybody else, if you know what I mean. I'm impressed. Probably nothing will come of it, but I'm impressed. Go Putfile.

What age did you stop believing in santa?
I caused a sensation in my first grade class when I claimed that santa wasn't real. I knew no one would believe me, but it was funny to watch the teachers laugh about it over everyone else's heads, all the while claiming that of course he could be real. I don't know when I stopped believing in it; I don't know that I ever really did believe in it. Probably I believed it when I was so young you could tell me anything, but that hardly counts. It didn't upset me. I took it as a sign that I was worldly and sophisticated. Oh yeah. I was a cool dude at around age 5. 8)

History's most influential inventions
Time? And by time, I mean our ways of measuring it and keeping track, right down to individual seconds. People all arrive at work exactly on time at 5:00:00, any later and they're late. That's a big defining factor of our lives.

Facial hair/shaving
I have a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo, and I have to say, it's kind of disappointing. I couldn't even get it to break the sound barrier. Seriously, what's with the names of these razors? I want one labelled "Extra Sharp" or "Hair Nemesis" or something like that. None of this stupid "turbo" carp. And "fusion"? What's being fused? Hopefully not my face... It's all just false advertising. Like "Extra Sharp" cheddar cheese. Biggest gyp ever, man.

Hooray!
It gave me a negative number... :? Maybe I shouldn't have just guessed at all the measurements  I'm sure my body fat is really low anyway, but it would be interesting to actually get it tested. What does this machine from P.E. look like?

Intelligent design opponent victim of roadside beating.
That is not the issue, the issue is that they were going to FORCE creationism on the kids. As opposed to forcing Evolutionism. The issue of how the world came about should just be left to the big bang with a note that the students can think whatever they want happened to cause it. Please don't let this topic be hijacked and turned into a massive flame war between Creationists and Evolutionists. (Not saying its you, Herr, but its been happening already). I agree, the study of evolution should be limited to the following: Teacher: "Look at the fossil record here. 50 Million years ago, animal x was alive. It had four legs and fur. From 10 million years later, we have discovered extremely similar fossils. But the ends of the front legs are wider, as if they could be used as flippers. The rear legs are also modified a little, sticking more straight out backward, as if to better propel the animal in the water. We also have fossils from another 10 million years later. Again, they are extremely similar, but now the back legs are more or less atrophied, and the front legs look exactly like flippers. Oh, and it appears to not have fur anymore. Given this progression, it looks as if the animal from 50 million years slowly changed into the animal from 30 million years ago. That's my conclusion, anyway. But you don't have to believe that. It's just a theory. Believe what you want. We would never presume to tell you what to believe...." ...and in order to stay on topic, this quote from the article just about sums it up... Welcome to America, Stangl.

T0P Actors?
Russell Crowe - apparently not a very nice guy offstage, but he's an incredible actor Jake Gyllenhaal - great actor...like Crowe, able to play many different types of character, very versatile Samuel L. Jackson - He did a great job in "Coach Carter." Kind of a cliche movie, but his performance was real. Denzel Washington - Ever seen "John Q"? Johnny Depp - sometimes just a little too weird, but he is another one who can play any type of character, funny (Pirates of the Carribbean) or serious (Finding Neverland) Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx also did a great job in "Collateral", but I haven't seen that many movies with them, so I couldn't really tell you how good they are. EDIT: How could I forget Jim Carrey? Liar Liar is a classic... Wait, should we be including actresses too?

green day concert!
Elitist boy, want a hug? I love how much hate Green Day gets because their mainstream  Oh God, gotta love the hate bandwagon Gamerpenguin, how was it? They aren't hated because they are mainstream, they are hated because they are a * emo band now. Most mainstream music is popular for a reason, green day eludes that, however. So their music is popular for......no reason at all? When your fanbase consists primarily of teenage girls, yes, no reason at all. Wow, that's actually a really good point  Props, man. But I don't consider myself a teenage girl. They do have something likable about their songs. Of course they're different than the old Green Day, and maybe you don't like the change, but that's no reason to hate them. Can't you just move on and stop listening to them without condemning them for moving in a different direction?

I created a bot
You need to teach this guy about possessive pronouns like "its" and "your." They are not necessarily stand-ins for "its" and "you're." Example... Avatar = nothing special :?

any song about children living on the street?
Yellow Brick Road by Eminem? He's not homeless, but he is poor. btw, lyrics off the internet are really unreliable. I just looked up this tune on azlyrics.com, and it was absolutely full of errors. Here's the real lyrics as I know them. I bolded the parts that are really about living on the street: Good luck with your school project

green day concert!
Yeah... I still don't understand the lyric from American Idiot... this one, "Maybe I'm the fa*got* America".... does anyone know what they are trying to say? Thanks Hypno for agreeing! :D I think it's supposed to be mocking to republican homophobes. Green Day is being sarcastic, like "maybe I'm just another stupid g()y guy." I'm not sure, though. If you think those lyrics don't make sense, look up the lyrics for "letterbomb" someday  Actually, I'll just post a lil sampler here: I like green day, new and old, but these lyrics are a bit....strange :? Good song, anyway. 8)
