I just tested mine, it's only 1/4th of a second T_T Anyways I'll be attempting Jad every slayer task I get for 89 -> 93 slayer, and hopefully I will have a cape by then I'd love to ask those 6 second Jad slayers how many attempts it took them to pull that off. Regardless, i hope a focus sight + vengeance will be enough to let me finish off jad for once. 6-second Jad kills aren't hard, they just take a few tries. Slayer Helm / Neitiznot Helm Vesta's Chainbody / Statius Platebody / Bandos Chestplate / Fighter Torso Vesta's Plateskirt / Statius Platelegs / Bandos Tassets Dragon Boots Berserker Ring (i) Gloves (RFD, Barrows) Amulet of Fury Dragon Claws Abyssal Whip / Godsword 99 Attack, 99 Strength, 99 Hitpoints, 92+ Herblore (for Overlords, use Spicy Stew if necessary), 95 Prayer (and Ancient Curses, for Turmoil), 87 Magic (and Lunar Magic, for Vengeance) Before the last 360 dies, heal yourself to 115/99 with Brews. Protect Range once the 360 is dead. Trap Jad behind one of the walls. Overload, then heal to 115/99. Cast Vengeance once you can. Equip Dragon Claws, activate the special (make sure you're at 100%). Once you're at 125/99 Attack and Strength, make sure 30 seconds have past since you've cast Vengeance, turn on Turmoil and Soul Split and attack. Jad has 250 hitpoints. With Dragon Claws, it's fairly easy to hit over 70 damage, and your max is near 100. You attack fast enough to hit Jad at least thrice in the time he attacks he twice, probably four times. You can also land two vengeance hits, if you survive (which you should, since 115 + soul split is easily enough to take two hits). 2 Dragon Claw Specials + 1 Dragon Claw / Abyssal Whip / Godsword Hit + 2 Vengeance Hits is usually greater than Jad's 250 HP. Now all it takes is a few tries to get lucky with a) Jad getting stuck and B) getting the timing all right. It's not easy, but it's most certainly possible, and has been done before. Not the most practical but if lag is really that terrible, it's certainly an option.

I am all for actually training skills up to access new content. If a monster comes out that needs full gold castle wars armour i would gladly spend the months getting it so i could try out the new monster. What attracted me to rs in the first place was that it was so wonderful with almost any connection. So what really bugs me is that they come out with content that is dependant of having a good internet connection or an insane amount of luck. Heck i'm surprised that i managed to beat nomad even though it did take me like 30 tries so don't ever call me lazy just because you city folk think that you can get broadband at the snap of your fingures. And there is a difference between lag and a time delay. with lag you space out for a second and when you stop lagging you get the multiple attack splashes ect. and is managable since you still have a constant data feed and can eat normally ect. With time delay it works like this. 1)Jad attacks 2)two seconds minimum baring any bad weather it shows up on my computer that jad is attacking 3) i see the attack and click the correct prayer button 4) two seconds later my prayer comes up and by that time jad has already hit me and has begun his next attack Human reaction time is what? 3/4 of a second at best? So by the time my prayer has actually come on a minimum of 5 seconds, if there is absolutly no bad weather, has passed. by that time jad has already hit me and begun his next attack. More rationalization. It's tiring. If you want to call it impossible, then fine. But it really sounds quite pathetic. The first fight with Jad, I gave up prayer switching entirely after about a third of the fight, and simply deflected magic. Prayer switching is not necessary. My second attempt was plagued by heavy latency, AKA, I can click but nothing will respond for a couple seconds. I got hit a bunch, but still I lived. If you really can't do it, just move on. I have friends who've already stated they'll never have 93 slayer, since they simply don't have the patience and/or time for it. Yet if they were to complain about the high requirement, plenty of people are ready to throw sharp words their way. News flash, patience and perseverance in training skills is only ONE facet of this game. Having reflexes, timing, and coordination has always been another facet. I'm sick of hearing statements like "oh there's nothing involved at all, it's not even a challenge... but I can't do it because of ____." Seriously, get over yourself. You're not more important than those who excel in a different style of game play, and content that requires you to be proficient in more than one way isn't unfair in the slightest. If you really, really can't deal with it, just move on. The need for a Fire Cape should no more be removed because you feel as if you can't finish the Fight Caves as the level requirement be removed for someone who has only half an hour to play each week. There's other slayer monsters for you, there will be more slayer monsters in the future, and what's more, Jagex took you into consideration when they made it so you wouldn't be FORCED to fight Ice Strykewyrms.

now here is an idea that i think it decent, still i love to see all the level 93 slayers who cant manage to get a fire cape XD its kinda sad tbh seeing as he has been killed in 6 seconds w/o pray switching Its also possible to solo the corp and how many people actually do that? And i'm 94 slay with almost max stats besides pray. And it is imposible for me to kill jad. Its not that i'm lazy or don't like fight caves, Its actually my second favorite minigame, it is literally impossible for me to kill him. The reson why is because of my internet conncection. The only, ONLY, conection that i can get out here is satalite and because of that there is a time delay from when i see or hear his attack to when i switch prayers. Because of that no matter what i do it is impossible for me to actually protect against one of his attacks unless it is through sheer dumb luck that i pick the right prayer. Having an item as a requirement that is impossible for some people to get simply because of where they live is a dumb idea. Like others have said you could have an enchanted fire tiara, like the enchanted water tiara, that uses runes to protect against ice ( might even be usable for ancient spells or wyverns but thats another topic), fire gloves, ring of fire, heck even an adze could be used, or simply a dumbed down version of the fire cape that degrades and can only be bought with tokuul so that it still introduces people to the fight caves. What i would personally like to see happen is have an area efect in the icewyrm caverns similair to the desert or the snow areas near gwd that does minor damage and reduces a random stat slowly over time. a fire cape would nullify that effect and make it easier to kill them but slayers who have not gotten it could still kill them but require more work. Or maybe people should just accept that some content is aimed at those who excel in patience and perseverance, some updates are aimed towards those with reflexes and timing, and some updates require both. It's not the end of the world. People who have the patience for 93 slayer but not the ability to kill Jad are no more meant to be able to kill Ice Strykewyrms than someone with no patience to train slayer but the the ability to beat Jad. Instead of adding more excuses to the mountain of "reasons we can't beat Jad", just get over yourselves. Ice Strykewyrms wasn't meant for slayer, it was meant for slayer who ALSO have the abilities to handle fight caves. Jad's been beaten before without prayer-switching (through multiple strategies), Jad's been beaten despite horrible lag, Jad's been beaten by low and high levels alike. People can be so hypocritical. They demand content for experienced players, citing their own favorite skills and their own levels of play, and when an update is beyond their own reach, they come up with every reason to try to lower the difficulty...

Uses for the staff of light
What about soloing rex though as i usually use slayer dart there (i've never done pc and dont plan on doing so) If you use slayer dart, you are either solo-ing, or you WILL be crashed. My friend and I were duo maging and had Void Maces. We were crashed by a similar team who thought they could win because they had Extreme Pots... well, we had them too. If you're solo-ing, Salamander > Slayer Dart. Also, you might still get crashed... I'd like to make a short correction. Staff of Light might be good for magic slaying, that remains to be seen. Staff of Light is inferior for PvP mages, though. For hybrids, Ice Barrage is used to freeze and force a change in prayer. For both of these, Master Wand is better (more accuracy, and you're not going for damage here). For pure damage, Zuriel's is better AND has a similar effect on your opponent's melee DPS, but also affects his or her range DPS. In Safe PvP, it's great. Zuriel's is still better, but some don't like the degrading. However, in safe PvP, Master Wand is usually still sufficient. Staff of Light is THE staff for bursting though. Bursting with Staff of Light and Combat Robes sounds incredible.

Uses for the staff of light
When crashing occurs, it's not about who actually gets the most kills. See, even if you were to split the kills 50-50, you both suffer. You kill twice as fast, you get half the kills, and you spend twice as much time waiting for spawns. This slows both teams down significantly, and truthfully, neither team wants that. People crash either solely to cause grief for others (rare at DKs), or to try to force you to surrender your world. In other words, it's about perceived strength, not actual strength. If they think they have the advantage, they'll keep trying until you give up. Even if you start winning, they'll feel like it's a temporary turn of luck (think the gambler who flips 50 tails, he figures he'll get a heads sooner or later despite his 50 tails being statistically irrelevant). So they'll keep trying, which is what you DON'T want. What you need is to match them, point for point, so that everything points to the fact they have no advantage. This means you need to show as much power as possible, and once people understand that Claws of Guthix +10% > Fire Surge + 15%, Staff of Light and Fire Surge won't cut it. Now, you could bring both - Void Mace if you're crashed, Staff of Light otherwise, but this is pointless IMO. If you aren't suffering a crash, Black Salamander is a far superior weapon. With the prayer gear available to us now, you can easily get +30 prayer without crippling your defense. 3 prayer potions can last you a solid hour of killing Rex with protect melee.

I see the Staff of Light as more of an incentive for players to mage slay than anything. At least, that's what I'll be using it for. That's possible. Like I said, very few people kill ordinary monsters with magic right now, because melee and range are cheaper and faster. Depending on how people perceive the rune-saving bonus, and how it interacts with Hexcrest, this may change; if things like slayer are done through magic, then this staff is certainly best for that.
-
08-Feb-10 - Musical Update & Strykewyrms
Look at those again more carefully. If you're using a Master Wand, you want ACCURACY more than anything else. Not defense, not damage. You're looking to land your special effect, probably freeze, as soon as possible. This is one of the few PvE applications of magic - there are people who mage Zil and the like, and NEED to proc freeze. Now look at Void Mace again. It gives you +2 prayer, loses some mage bonus, and doesn't get +5%. BUT, simply mathematics proves that Claws of Guthix with Void Mace hits higher than Fire Surge with Staff of Light. And you can not cast Claws of Guthix, or any other God Spell, with the Staff of Light. Now, where do you want damage spells PvE? The most common place today is Dagannoth Kings. At Dagannoth Kings, either you're alone, or you're facing crashers. If you're facing crashers (you're with a team), you need to outdamage the other team, and Claws of Guthix WILL beat Staff of Light, because your accuracy bonus is irrelevant there. Which brings me to the next one. Cost. Staff of Light is inarguably cheaper than the same spell cast via Void Mace. But in places where this is the key point, and you have time on your side, there's a much better option: the Black Salamander. At less than 150 a cast and a respectable DPS rate, it's much cheaper. Besides, when solo-ing, you often face problems with spawn rates, so your boosted damage and accuracy means less anyways. Finally, you compared it to Miasmic. Well, why WOULD you use Zuriel's if it wasn't for Miasmic? You need Zuriel's to cast Miasmic, and Miasmic is the best ancient spell. It has the same overall effect of halving DPS against you, but also affect range. For things that require high DPS, again, fighting for Rex kills or PvP, the increased damage still wins this one. All this is theory. Here's a better way to look at it: where would Staff of Light be THE staff of choice? Bursting / Barraging Lobsters, yes. Killing Ice Strykeworms with Fire Surge, yes. Where else? Barrows is better done with Salamander. DKs is better done with Salamander / Void Mace. PKing is better done with Zuriel's. PvP minigames are better done with Zuriel's, noting that slowing their attack speed benefits your whole team, not just you. Ordinary PvE is still melee and range dominated - cheap as it may be now with Staff of Light, melee and range still do damage faster. Freezing Zil? I see a few teams doing that, and when they do that, they go the distance to get 3a Hats. I don't see them switching to Master Wand, because in the end, the extra damage means less than the extra accuracy. Staff of Light is good and overrated.

Wait a minute. The void mace and Zuriel's staff both give +10% damage, correct? You seem to forget that the staff of light gives +15% damage. The staff of light does more damage in every circumstance. You seem to forget you have to wield Zuriel's staff to cast any Miasmic spell, and you have to wield a God Staff or Void Mace to cast God Spells, the highest damaging spells in the Ancients Magicks and Standard Magic Spellbooks alike. You can no more cast Miasmic Barrage with a Staff of Light than you can AGS special with a Oak Longbow.

Arma can be done at your leisure, not in 2 hour chunks. And if someone goes to arma, it is because they ACTUALLY WANT to go to arma, not because they are forced to to kill a monster. Oh, and I am yet to see someone with a hexcrest equiped, anyone got pics? Yet the fight caves can be completed in ten minute intervals and in under an hour of total play time. On top of that, the only risk is spending money on supplies. What's your point? You are telling me that it is realistic and feasible to do the caves in 10 minute intervals? And show me a single person that can beat jad in under an hour for their first cape. Some people only play 30 minutes at a time/day, why make a quite honestly stupid requirement? I don't have the slayer level, and if/when I do I plan to have had a fire cape for a long while, but the requirement to have one to kill these seems very forced and added just to give firecape a special purpose Edit: Amazing point and I agree 100% I fought Jad for the second time ever on a task earlier. My first attempt took 90 minutes and I destroyed him easily without even knowing which attack was which (used an outdated guide so the animations information was useless). My second attempt (today) took 80 minutes. He hit me three times before I even figured out where he was, and hit me another five times throughout the fight. Seeing as you can kill Jad in under 7 seconds simply by stacking offense, tank out his hits simply by stacking defense, or defeat him through recognizing his attacks and praying appropriately, it's really not that unfair of a requirement is it?

50% melee protection for 1 minute = tank twice as many claw / ags specs against you = you can pray range / mage against a boss you'd normally have to pray melee against (e.g. Corp beast) I mentioned this already. It was good in theory, until someone tested it and found that it's too slow. It would be like using a D Long against the Corp, you simply won't do enough damage to make it worthwhile.

It's not... Claws of Guthix maxes 30, +21% from Wolpertinger, +10% from Void Mace, max hit of 40. Fire Surge maxes 28, +21% from Wolpertinger, +15% from Staff of Light, max hit of 39. So for raw damage, Void Mace > Staff of Light. Void Mace also provides prayer bonuses. Miasmic Barrage maxes 32, +21% from Wolpertinger, +10% from Zuriel's Staff, max hit of 42. Ice Barrage maxes 30, +21% from Wolpertinger, +15% from Staff of Light, max hit of 41. For raw damage while using Ancients, Zuriel's Staff > Staff of Light. Rune-saving sounds really nice. It probably is very cost-efficient for rune-intensive activities like bursting. But when max hit matters (bosses, where you need to do as much damage as you can to beat out crashers, or PvP, where you need to kill your opponent before he or she can heal), Staff of Light comes second whether you're using the standard spellbook or ancient magicks spellbook. Finally, Black Salamanders provide very cheap magical damage for single target combat. Prayer isn't particularly expensive if you're geared right either. It takes me less than three prayer potions for an entire hour of killing Rex with protect melee and a Black Salamander. If the Staff stays above 10M, it won't be because it's "the best", it'll be because it's rare. It may as well be Abyssal Whip rarity... except you need 8 more slayer levels, you must be on task, which also means you can't use wild pies to reach the level (doesn't work for slayer tasks), and you need a fire cape (lol-worthy requirement but I thought I'd mention it anyways). Or it could be because it's an incredible melee weapon, but rumors I've heard imply that it's the same speed as a Godsword (4 speed, or 20 attacks per minute)... You're forgetting some things- The Void Mace isn't up for other spells, unlike the Staff of Light. Zuriel's staff can't last longer than an hour (which basicly makes it a lot more expensive than SoL, if you're going to use Zuriel's staff regularly), and is basicly only used in PvP worlds (and perhaps BH worlds too). SoL has an amazing special attack, and for it, it is probably better than Zuriel's staff for PvP. SoL makes rune-cost degrade by a whole lot, especialy when combined with the FOG robes (pretty awesome for things like Castle Wars, bursting, and any other comat Magic-training). Lastly (although it doesn't make it better as a staff, but it still is a major role in the staff's price), it's great for melee (for it's special and not so bad melee stats), and, combined with the Elysian shield and a melee-protection Prayer, can almost completely negate melee PvP damage (imagine that in Castle Wars for example...). Actually, I'm not forgetting anything. Void Mace is perfectly capable of casting other spells, and will still get +10%. And it ALSO retains it's prayer bonus, which, pending on your situation, can mean far more than 5% damage. Zuriel's Staff is less than 1M last I checked. Staff of Light is worth an easter egg. An easter egg is priced at 300M street. Even at half that, that's a significant amount of playtime before it approaches the cost. Like I said, I'm not saying it's a bad weapon. No, it's a very good item - just not the best. The Staff of Light has balance, but: Accuracy - Beaten by master wand Damage Output - Beaten by Void Mace and Zuriel's Staff Price - Beaten by Salamander So if you need a low price but a Salamander doesn't work (need range or splash, for example, bursting), Staff of Light is great. But if you just need accuracy to land your special effects (freezing for example), Master Wand is superior. If you're likely to be crashed while fighting a boss, Void Mace is superior. If you're PKing and need higher damage to KO as well as effects, Zuriel's Staff is better. Finally, since you can't de-equip the staff and it sounds like it's only speed-5, you can't effectively melee with the staff taking advantage of the special. So if you're taking a ton of melee damage but can't use melee prayer, then sure, Staff of Light might be good. If you're planning on attacking solely through magic. In Castle Wars or the like, expect people to simply slap on mage defense and laugh at you, because if you try to use a bow or sword, your protection is gone.

Off-topic but nice signature. =p By the way, it sounds like the Staff of Light is actually speed 5, matching the speed of a longsword. At least, that's what you find if you search "speed" on RSOF. It may be wrong but with this many people saying it, and several of them in the game already, plus the similarity to Dragon Longsword in stats, it's very possible. Which makes it kind of disappointing, since it'll be no better of a melee weapon than Dragon Longsword is.

Barraging / Bursting doesn't even reach 200 crimsons at the 9-spot. Waterfiends are easily 130+ per hour, and this number goes up as your summoning gets higher. Barraging / Bursting comes at a massive expensive, but you profit or break even when killing Waterfiends. The staff is good for bursting and barraging, but bursting and barraging themselves have become more and more outdated as Jagex has improved our ability to plow through other charm droppers more efficiently. Also I'm pretty sure barrages net you ~300 xp per cast, when potted up, which means you're exaggerating the amount of runes necessary (and therefore, the savings).

Special attack gives 50% protection against melee attacks for one minute. A minute? Really? Isn't special restore 10% per 30 seconds? With special restore pot, another 25% per 30 seconds? You can regenerate a full special bar in 90 seconds if those numbers are accurate, so you can halve all melee damage 2/3 of the time. Against players, you can use this + Deflect Melee + Divine. AGS maxes under 20 after that, with special and full strength gear. XD
-
08-Feb-10 - Musical Update & Strykewyrms
Also, interesting fact: Staff of Light may be a better melee weapon than magic weapon. +55 Stab / +72 Strength Unknown Speed In comparison: +85 Stab / +75 Strength 6 Speed Rune Defender is +20 Stab / +5 Strength Staff/Defender is therefore +75 Stab / +77 Strength Now, on to speed. We won't know for sure until someone gets one and tests it publicly, but: Ahrim's Staff, Zuriel's Staff - Speed 4 Staff, Battlestaff, Mystic Staff - Speed 5 Saradomin Staff, Guthix Staff, Zamorak Staff, Slayer Staff, Ancient Staff - Speed 6 Seeing as this staff is MOST analogous to Slayer Staff, I wouldn't doubt it being Speed 6. If it is, it matches Zamorakian Spear, Saradomin Sword, Abyssal Whip, normal daggers / scimitars, and shortbows on accurate/long-range. If it was speed 6, it and defender would be -10 Stab and +2 Strength in comparison to Zamorakian Spear. Not a big deal. But consider this: Instead of using a Defender, you could use a Divine / Elysian Spirit Shield. Low stab, but nearly as much strength with greatly improved defense. Instead of using a Defender, you could use a Dragonfire Shield. Even higher strength, at the cost of stab attack bonus. Not to mention, protection against Dragonfire if you don't happen to have Super Antifires. Zamorakian Spear is already the weapon of choice among Slayers for Steel Dragons / Iron Dragons, and now we have a possibly viable, one-hand alternative.

You can cast Miasmic spells with Staff of Light? EDIT: Oops, fixed the typo. Meant Zuriel's staff of course.
-
08-Feb-10 - Musical Update & Strykewyrms
I don't think that's right. You can't use Zuriel's staff while using Staff of Light, so you're capped at +31% (Wolpertinger for +7 (21%) and Zuriel's Staff for 10%). 32 * 1.31 yields 41.92. Since the % bonus rounds up damage (tested it before) that makes Miasmic Barrage max at 42. Also, the Stone of Jas gives up to +180 magic levels which is 540% damage buff. With Ice Barrage you'll get 555% of 30 and with Miasmic Barrage, 550% of 32. That means you can max 167 with Ice Barrage or 176 with Miasmic Barrage on a Tormented Demon. Fun stuff.

I REALLY hope they don't change it. I feel the same way. I'll be pretty angry if they do. I don't understand why anyone with level 93 slayer or higher wouldn't already have a fire cape. It's not that I don't have the stats, it's simply that my connection speed really messes with my Prayer switching, so really I've resigned myself to the fact that I simply won't ever be able to get a fire cape while my internet is what it is. Honestly, I'd rather they change it to something else fiery. I mean, do they really expect us to gather our capes in a bunch and slap the thing? :^_^: You can get the Fire Cape without any pray switching. Someone has defeated Jad in under 7 seconds, using Soul Split and Dragon Claw Specials. When I fought Jad, I spent the first half of the fight praying magic against range and praying range against magic since I looked at an outdated guide for animations and forgot about the Graphics update, and still won on my first try. It really boils down to one of three things: offensive superiority so that you can utterly destroy him before he gets TOO many chances to kill you, and hope you get lucky within a few tries, defensive superiority so as to minimize his chance of killing you, or good reflexes and good connection speed. Of course if you have like 10 second latency you're doomed but I don't think anyone can bear playing with that anyways, or if they can, they're a very small minority.

**New Quest - Rune Mechanics**
Last quest was Nomad's requiem...Before that, agility benefits, barb assault, thats kinda neutral...Kuradels dungeon, high level slayer, Temple at Sennestein, high level prayer... Well, kinda convenient that this update happens before I craft a bunch of deaths :P Mint cake is kinda funny but doesn't affect me. Didn't try the minigame out either. Kinda wish the pet did something useful though. More points or exp at the mage training arena? Some sort of RC boost? Still, it's a pet, Jagex doesn't make useful pets. Blasphemy. My Wily Cat and the Overload Potions it helped me make would like a word with you.

3rd Age/Spirit shields/Phats Discussion
They have pictures for all except for the divine. http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Arcane_spirit_shield By the way thank you sharksman3 for showing me this. What the... Divine and Arcane were NOT close to the same shade of green. Arcane wasn't even green, it was a gray, tan color similar to BLESSED.

I can't figure out the mature chef's delight thing -- it is pretty easy to make. On the other hand, it takes a long time, and it is really boring -- so maybe. Would it be easy for Jagex to nerf? That's the problem with the gout tuber. If Jagex can nerf the cake, they can just as easily nerf the tuber. I don't think we want the "next mint" since mint failed. We want the new, improved, harder to nerf mint. Hence, RSjsp... For those who've never heard of it, d2jsp was a website founded by a third party mostly dedicated to Diablo II and its expansion. It originally started as a place for botters to convene and to share/discuss their software. Eventually, the owner of the website introduced a currency, FG. You pay for it, with real money, and trade it with other users of the site and forums. Other than buying it, you can win it in an automatic lottery system built into the forums, but of course the odds are rigged so on average more FG leaves than enters. PvP communities are huge and mostly composed of those who "squelch" on their bets and make a huge rant storm after. So you've got real-world trading, scamming, whining, ranting, drama, and everything else in one nice, disastrous, third-party package. The worst part? D2 has gotten to the point where it's ten times more difficult to trade and such in the game chat than on d2jsp. It takes me three hours or more to trade a few gemstones for a rune that I want, but on d2jsp, it takes 5 minutes to sell the gems, and 5 minutes later to buy the rune... with leftovers for the next time I need something. I really hope Runescape doesn't go that way, but so far, Jagex seems intent on running away from the real problem - that Grand Exchange prices do not correlate to the value of the items.
