  2. Whether spanking is appropriate or not should really be judged on a case-by-case basis. It depends on the child, the parent, and the method used. Some children do not listen to their parents unless they are spanked. That's just the way it is. I am currently visiting a family in Sweden, where spanking is illegal. They can try everything they want to get the child to behave, but nothing works. They aren't bad parents, because they have children that are older, that were raised when it was legal to spank, and they were spanked, and they are extremely well behaved children without any ill-feelings towards their parents. However, it should be used in moderation - and should always be followed up with a lecture. Just leaving it at a spanking is ineffective - but when combined with a lecture, is quite a good method of discipline. I was spanked as a child, and am quite thankful for it. I might be a complete a-hole today if it weren't for it, but, who knows eh?
  3. These kinds of polls are really quite useless.
  4. Okay, I read it carefully, but it still doesn't make sense. You're making this whole argument out of a word play with the word "created." There is absolutely no reason why logic can only exist if a supernatural being created us. As death_by_pod said earlier - the premise of your argument, that a logical mind can only be created by the supernatural, has no basis. You've just assumed that point and that point is the premise of your argument. Okay, I'll try and refragment his argument using one of my own, that may not be correct, but is interesting to think about. Reductionism (or the general scientific community) has reduced all things to a bunch of atoms and electrons. Thus, a tree is a bunch of atoms, and so is thought - a bunch of atoms, or electrons. Why are we able to call thought logical, or true, and not a tree? Both are mere electron/atom patterns - according to science, the only difference is in their electronic makeup. But of course, it would be absurd to assign truth values to a tree, and it would be absurd to not assign truth values to a thought.
  5. I hate the smokers in my school :| They smoke right off the stairs so I used to pass them almost everyday. If I had a decent camera, I would've been so tempted to take pictures of them and mail it to the school. Yeah, it's sooo obnoxious. I can't even pee without getting convered in smoke. Isnt againt the rules smoke inside closed places like bathrooms? In my school they dont let smoking inside, but outside... meh, if you die they wont move a finger. In Toronto they just passed a bylaw that makes it illegal to smoke in any public place, including outdoors I believe.
  6. I still think requeim for a dream is the best anti-drugs campaign :P
  7. Before the series I would have picked Edmonton - they play with heart, something that can overcome the most skilled teams. However, without Roli, they're sunk. I choose Carolina in 4.

Bcuz when u dont use prorper gramamar u end up... bcoming unable to express urself proprely oka?! Seriously though, I support Jagex' banning of the "word" 'thats'. People need to buck up and starting learning how to type/spell properly. I've talked with TAs in my philosophy class that have received (unversity level) essays with ridiculous spelling. For example, 'your', instead of 'you're'. And you aren't even supposed to use 'you're' - it's an incorrect spelling of a word that isn't even allowed in the first place :P. No doubt lazy internet-speak is more than a cause of this.
  9. In your point of view :P in my opinion the atheist usually uses science, which is irrelevant to God's existence. Evolution? God could've used it. To say "it makes more sense that it just randomly happened", is merely a matter of opinion. To me, it makes more sense that something caused it to happen the way it did. Most of the remaining arguments consist of how religion contradicts itself which is again unrelated to God's existence. (eg. Bible verse contradictions). Another of the remaining arguments consist of showing how religious people don't follow their religion, which is irrelevent to religion itself and God's existence. And the last of the remaining arguments consist of trying to disprove a certain belief about God. For example, the one we are currently on. "If God gave us free will and knows what we will choose, and we choose evil, then God isn't a good God". Since the argument itself presupposes God's existence, it is also irrelevent to God's (non)-existence. Therefore, the religious don't even need to 'struggle', as you say. Because there is simply nothing to struggle against. It's just interesting to think outside the box for a change and challenge our own views, even if we go in knowing that nothing said will change them. The burden of proof really doesn't rest on anyone in this thread - it's not a thread titled "prove God is true" or "prove God is non-existent", it's a thread titled "do you believe in God?", meaning the burden of opinion/proof is on the poster. This isn't a scientific method-based forum where sure answers are written in textbooks. See first paragraph. It's not a matter of proof, since God cannot be proven or disproven. It's a matter of exercising our minds, playing devil's advocate. Y'know, fun intellectual stuff :P And just for the record, God does not equate religion.
  10. Nothing, but if God is infallible and has foresight then you don't have free will over decisions. If God is always right and he knows you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re going to do X instead of Y, then the only option you can take is X otherwise god is wrong (is fallible and doesn't have foresight). What's the point of God having foresight if it doesn't turn out to be true; it may as well be a guess. God may foreknow what you will freely choose. It's weird to think about, but I think it works. Fortune tellers guess the future, God doesn't (unless your willing to part with his infallible ability of foresight); pretty big difference. Some fortune tellers would disagree about the guessing part :P either way, it was just a toy example to prove a point.
  11. Ya know I've always wondered that. I personally believe that we make choices every day, but 'God' (or whatever he/she/it is) already knows the future and what will happen, so we don't really have free will. I believe our choices are based on two things: Our genetics and our environment. The way our mind and body is set at birth can have a strong affect on what we do (how we look effects us everyday, someone could be bipolar, etc). Environment, the more important part, directly 'controls' what we do. Everything we do we do because what happened in our environment in the past told us to do it. How does someone knowing what is going to happen, mean that you still aren't making your own choice? Just curious... Precisely; I don't see people blaming fortune tellers for stuff that happens to them and accuse them of making the choice for them.

I think it might be because the "scary" movies rely on quick "startling" scenes to get people screaming, but it doesn't actually last. So the movie isn't scary, it just surprises you now and again.
  15. I think his point was that you never know what could be around the bend. You might have a "terminal disease which gives you daily pain from which you have no hope of being cured of", and then the next day, like his grandpa, you're in perfect health - which would make euthanasia best looked at in hindsight, which is utterly useless. Alot of the old-testament laws were culturally directed - since we aren't living in a nomadic Jewish civilization thousands of years ago, we can't really judge their actions. My views on euthanasia are that it should be judged in a case-by-case manner, and therefore you can't really take a purely objective stand on it. Even in each particular case, the right decision can only be made in hindsight, and that is IF the decision is not to be euthanized (because if you choose to be euthanized there's no hindsight, because we don't know what would have happened).
  16. My ex-highschool (public) was very upper class in all areas except for English and physics. All other areas were taught with excellence. It is a general trend that high school students in Ontario going to university will experience a 10% grade drop - coming from my high school, I experienced a grade increase because it was an extremely difficult school.
  17. The Bible states that Christians are not to judge non-believers. However, the Bible says very clearly that Christians acting immorally are to be judged extremely harshly by their fellow-Christians, to get them back in line. The Apostle Paul even goes so far in one of his letters to ask "why have you not excluded this man from your church yet?" (he was having sex with his fathers wife and he was extremely proud of it). Agreed to your first comment - but your second, Christ is regarded as God in human flesh - therefore, worshipping Christ is worshipping God.

I definitely enjoyed it. I'm usually not one for purely action-type movies, but I had alot of fun seeing it!
  19. locked ;)
  20. This isn't really... yea... I can't think after reading this, so I guess there won't be a decent lock message, but, you all know why I'm locking this. Spam, or, just not giving the author the advice they were looking for, something around those lines. All in all, the thread just isn't going anywhere close to intelligent.
  21. In my area, the daVinci code is getting horrible reviews. Now I'm not so sure about seeing it :|
  22. Yep, and the airlines I've flown on have been very kind to their customers, and would totally do something like this.

If you touched her anywhere at all (shoulder, waist, hand), and it was not invited - she could have taken it the wrong way. Remember, women are more sensitive to things like this than guys are.
  24. You're saying if no one sees it, it doesn't happen? No, I'm saying somebody had to be there to make it happen, the somebody being God. He has to make the stuff happen. Or else it would just be nothingness forever. Something had to make it. Right.. So someone made crystals form, someone made mountains form (ignore plate tectonics, thats just a theory); all because you say so, and then you invent infinite nothingness to base this argument on. He was talking about the matter/energy for the Big Bang, not mountains :|

I love it. I've learned about 15 songs of his on guitar, and as long as you can palm mute, they're simple to learn!
