    Your dream job?

High finance or politics. Alternately, union busting lawyer would be awesome.
  2. Depends on where you live and one's definition of "good". In some parts of Europe little difference exists between universities in terms of quality (all are state supported) so, relatively speaking, awesome grades do little. In the United States however a relatively small number of elite universities with massive endowments & partciularly famous faculty do require superb grades for admission.

    Gun Control

California does have castle doctrine passed. Though the gun controls are annoying, they don't materially impact the purchase of weapons - legal loopholes are so huge it's trivial to get whatever you want anyhow. Besides, just wait a few years and the supreme court will strike many of those laws down :)

    Unions

Looks like the union can form about 20 PAC's, funnel as much money into them as they please, and then let the PAC's donate their maximum amount to the candidate. Either way, organizations receiving or looking to receive government contracts should not be able to donate to political campaigns. I understand there is a freedom of speech issue, but how corrupt is it when the company awarded a billion dollar contract kicks back a few million to the politicians that supported them, or will support them in the future? Same thing for unions - we're taking our government awarded contracts to give money to the politicians that will give us more. While this is true, the governor's campaign (which has the highest limits) is only allowed a little over one million in total. This bill is ridiculous in WI. It is not about balancing the budget. Before Walker came into office there was a SURPLUS in the budget. He gave tax breaks to businesses, creating the shortfall. That coupled with the unnecessary removal of collective bargaining rights equates a direct attack on unions. He has been trying to bust unions since he was a peon in Milwaukee county. Is union busting really a bad thing though? Unions have led to the downfall of many otherwise strong American businesses such that eliminating them would strengthen the state as a whole (and hopefully improve education)

    Unions

As many of you may know, the states of Wisconsin , Indiana, Ohio and several others are all in the process of passing bills which would essentially eliminate collective bargaining rights for government workers; a story about this process is available here. Obviously such a significant hit to public sector unions is unprecedented, so what does TIF think about this proposal? What will it do for the states? Do you support it? Personally I welcome these bills and think their introduction is long overdue. Monopolistic unions have for too long dictated unfair and unreasonable terms of employment to their employees, damaging the efficiency of government and (in education at least) seriously hurting the quality of education available to children. These bills are a briliant idea.

    Today...

Another student and I brought down the entire district network during a computer class without trying to. It was a major fail. were you being reckless? Suspension for an accident seems excessive.

    Gun Control

Strong point. Also, in response to killing being the only use of a gun, this is not the case. I'm sure I speak for most here when I say that intimidation is the main reason a gun is desirable for self-defense proponents, and pulling the trigger would only be conceived if an innocent life was in immediate danger. The reason I'm against gun bans in America is because I want lives to be saved. Statistically speaking you are correct. While I don't remember the name of the study off the top of my head, something like 19 times out of 20 no shots were fired when a gun was used in self defense.
  8. Currently reading the Qur'an and The Soviet Tragedy, a history of the development and downfall of the Soviet Union. Both are quite interesting.
  9. This. Sound is another matter however since neither VGA nor DVI carry sound; you'll need to get a separate cable to carry sound for the speakers.
  10. wikipedia.org I can spend all day on that site.
  11. knowing an admin well (or being one) plus luck is your only way, outside of winning rank contests. Despite being a moderator for ~3 years it still took me almost two months of asking around before I managed one.
  12. Took it. Still, your girlfriend should probably consider her surveyed population in evaluating her results - TIF users skew young, male, and disproportionally less interested in health & physical fitness. You are unlikely to get a representative sample of the population by polling us. Perhaps a battery of demographics questions might be in order?
  13. As homework help is not allowed in OT, this should be locked. Still, the easiest list to use is the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines; available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WHO_Model_List_of_Essential_Medicines. Just pick 15 or so familiar ones from the list.
  14. If a 13 years old is so gullible the problem lies somewhere deep ... No. The only problem is that they are a child being manipulated by an adult. If there was a problem or fault on the child, there wouldnt be 11 felony charges slapped on a 54-year-old man. Regardless of whether or not the child was at fault for any activities such charges still would have been filed as13/54 is rape regardless of consent.
  15. The risk/reward payout is why people go into the field in the first place. If potential benefits decline due to piracy, less people will go into the field, but the risk/reward equation will always make sense for the individual artist because otherwise they wouldn't go into the field.
  16. given that the target was Russia, such a response would not be out of character.
  17. Is this a serious post?
  18. Personally I have never been bothered by it. Valentines day is only a hallmark holiday anyhow, so it really makes little sense to dwell on it.

    School

Depends on the physics class you are taking. Regular old high school physics requires some rudimentary calculus, while upper level classes can get substantially more complicated. Generally speaking however yes, physics is rather math heavy.
  20. Which is why deregulation is necessary. If multiple ISPs existed to compete for peoples' business this would not be a problem - no one in their right mind would charge per GB if they had to worry about competition
  21. It's not really a riot, it's been impressively peaceful so far. Peaceful? As already mentioned buildings have been torched, the internet turned off and the police have disappeared. While not quite a civil war these protests are far from peaceful.

    Gun Control

At this point has anyone submitted evidence of a causal link between guns and crime? I know plenty exists to the contrary, but I still have not seen any proof.
  23. To answer the OP's original question, while a handful of viruses do exist for macs, they are exceedingly rare and the only ones I have heard of pop up packaged with torrented copies of ilife, photoshop and others. Generally speaking an antivirus shouldn't be necessary.

    Gun Control

The important thing is that the story is a fictional supposition which is additionally simply not true on an overall statistical basis - guns improve safety more then they harm it. Statistically speaking, having a pool in the back yard is 9 times more dangerous then a gun on the nightstand.
