  1. Depends on the school you go to. Unlike the UK, schools in the US charge tuition rates anywhere from free to ~$60,000 per year, with everything in between. Less expensive large instate public universities run about 6-8000 dollars per year, which is charged to essentially everyone, whereas famous private universities commonly charge $50,000 per year (though they give out massive need-based grants, Harvard distribuited some $300,000,000 in aid to their undergraduate student body of 8000 last year)
  2. Eh, Clinton was a decent president who didn't get bogged down tin needless partisanship. It's good to see he can work well with Obama - keeping someone like that involved is invaluable to American diplomacy.

    Meds

Unless, the illness you need a rx for is starvation. And I guess that's bad about rx, but really it's the clients fault for being duped in. There's so many placebo pills out there it's laughable. We answer calls at my job for this "laser spine center" which everyone knows is a scam where they steal thousands of dollars, and these people still go along with it because they don't google it for 4 seconds. You can research a rx your dr gives you before you fill it out. And I think that's the one part of "free market" I don't really like, is the facts that scams can become successful. However, those can happen just as common in other, non as free markets. But this is just off topic. So yea, but I don't really see the point in the majority of medication out there, I mean, if you have ADHD, work harder at concentrating. High cholesteral? Eat not as fatty foods. Of course there are going to be people who legitmately need it, but for craps sake, show some discipline. I don't think you understand either how medications are approved for use or what exactly they do. Everything prescribed by a doctor and filled through a pharmacy MUST be approved by the FDA, which requires that all drugs sold must be proven effective in large double-blind clinical trials. simple "placebo medications" just do not exist as you suggest. Further, diseases like ADHD and high cholesterol are caused by biological factors that cannot simply be wished away - drugs are the only way to fix the problem for many individuals.
  4. The Klan did not steal private documents and publish them for no reason other then to damage the United States.
  5. You need to be a little more specific then just simply "HP dv6"; that refers to an entire class of computers by HP. You need the exact model to find the driver.
  6. What 'millions' of people is he talking about? Has anyone died yet from these cables being released? No. Has there been a security breach? No. To quote Julian Assange in an article he wrote today: Both can absolutely be true. Revealing common, day-to-day activities can easily put intelligence assets and informants in danger, while those very common-sense reports do nothing whatsoever to break news of dishonesty in government. The reason these leaks are so stupid is simply that they reveal nothing significant about the government while risking peoples' lives.
  7. While I suppose this is theoretically possible, the story seems unlikely as nothing short of 100% concentrate 18 molar acid could cause such severe burns. Still, if it did happen it would be exceedingly unpleasant.
  8. No leaks thusfar have revealed any evidence of corruption; those who did leak the documents ARE criminals as classified documents are just that - classified; and the US government has never threatened Jullian Assange - he is known to make grandiose claims that people are "after him" so as to overstate his own importance. Oh, and the US never blocked wikileaks - no mechanism exists for the US government to censor the internet.

    Your dream job?

Either high finance, politics, or academia. Each serves one of my passions in life - high pressure business, arguing & research.
  10. This. TIF is a nice little community where interesting discussions can be had without excessive ideological attacks.
  11. Yeah that's good and all, but releasing the information after the events have transpired kind of defeats the purpose of it doesn't it? I want to know what is actively going on so I can form an opinion NOW. Releasing information after things happen removes responsibility from government. If things go well because of their decision: "See, we were right!" If things go badly: "We need to learn from our mistakes". Either situation, they get to do WHATEVER they want to. Granted that is the nature of the democratic system (electing leaders to make decisions for us), but I believe if we elected them, we should at least be granted the decency of knowing what they are doing. I'm willing to compromise if names and the like need to be left out to grant safety to confidential sources or informants, but the rest of the information should be public under all circumstances. That, I will not compromise on. Making all such discussion public would only hurt the government's ability to do its' job. Many of these communications could easily damage international relations and hinder actual dealmaking.
  12. Given that South Korea asked for thousands of American troops to be stationed in the country, It's safe to say that they do.
  13. That is standard practice - all countries use diplomats for information collection. Very little surprising information was in those cables but they did provide for an interesting insight into the workings of the diplomatic service. I'm not usually one for open mockery, but this is just too easy. Yep, because hundreds of construction experts, demolition experts, and scientists from around the world, who make buildings collapse for a living, must all be wackos. [citation needed] http://www.911truth.org/ Just google it and spend 5 minutes reading some articles. Or failing that, explain how a building that supposedly pancake collapsed, i.e. one floor falling on top of another, can fall at free fall speed? Barring god willed it its physically imposible because the floors falling on top of one another would have slowed it down. you are trolling, right? If I remember right a pair of 757's hit those buildings. Last time I checked being hit by a large airplane was rather damaging. The edited editions of the messages as published by newspapers had no damaging confidential information in them, but the underacted versions as published directly on wikileaks do. The issue here is essentially that they contain information putting people in danger while not providing any real public benefit other then an interesting read - nobody has found anything particularly surprising through all of these messages. I kinda do too. Why would a site like that even exist? I mean, if it's sole purpose (as it could be construed as:) is to leak documents... Couldn't that be said to propagate treason and thus by federal law be shut down? Per New York Times v. US in most cases people are protected when publishing leaked documents by the first amendment. While an American court order could probably shut down the site, legally such an order would be difficult for the government to acquire.
  14. florescent bulbs = energy saving bulbs, for all intents and purposes. Those curly energy saving bulbs you see are essentially just twisted up tube bulbs (which, incidentally, are quite energy efficient). The only technology which saves energy is LED lighting, which is quite rare and expensive at the moment. Why you would want to get rid of incandescent bulbs is another story. The light color is softer, and if your mom doesn't mind the sightly higher bills I would let it go.
  15. An Iphone 4. It is a nice phone, though I may pick up a droid as a secondary (I sometimes carry two phones on different phone numbers - it's handy to know who to ignore at certain times).
  16. Kim spawnlings = Kimlings? :P But yeah, I've heard that as well. Apparently the older Kim's health isn't great....and promoting someone to general is pretty big in NK since head of state is also head of the army if I recall correctly? Correct. And Kim Jong Il is believed to have cancer, heart problems, and failing kidneys, among other things.
  17. Granted they did fire away from the shore but what did they think would happen after they fired on the north? Kim jong may be a mad man but he's not an idiot. He know that if he does start a war he will be crushed. North Korea regularly threatens the south when drills are planned. The training is not out of the ordinary - the north's response is. But how many drills acutally have the south fireing into water that the north views as its own? Granted it was not onto land but it was still in waters that the north has a claim on. If say, mexico, fired into the water off the coast of florida but not actually hit the land what would be the U.S's reply? Still fairly common. Much of the border area is disputed, and the two countries love to antagonize one another.
  18. Granted they did fire away from the shore but what did they think would happen after they fired on the north? Kim jong may be a mad man but he's not an idiot. 19. Unfortunately these events are rather common - tensions are always quite high on the North/South border. In all probability it will die down in a few hours.
  20. The key word there being deny. Nobody is denying others freedom.
  21. Immigrants, regardless of their country of origin, tend to be generally more law abiding then the general population. Generally speaking no they do not have an easier time. Immigration to the United States is based upon skill and education - the more talented you are the easier it is to get in the country. True stars like major-league athletes, Nobel prizewinning professors etc have a ridiculously easy time immigrating to the US, while professional people (doctors, engineers etc) have it slightly harder. Only unskilled workers IE laborers are generally barred from the country, and even then the immigration lottery still provides for occasional slots. Whoever claimed birthright and race had anything to do with peoples' rights? People are born in one particular state and enjoy the rights that the state provides. It is nonsensical to be angry because your particular state happens to afford you superior rights and opportunities to everyone else.
  22. In the United States asylum seekers are not a major issue - relatively few exist, and those that do exist generally have very good reason for being in the country. People illegally entering the country to work are the issue here.
  23. Not necessarily - it depends on who is immigrating. In the United States, immigrants from places like China and India are disproportionately educated such that most which come are doctors or engineers. This is in contrast to immigrants from Central America and Mexico, who tend to be uneducated, taking unskilled laborer jobs. Jobs taken by immigrants are not universal. It depends on a number of factors.
  24. Memory is fully standardized - so long a your motherboard supports the RAM simply adding more should be fully effective.
  25. It's interesting that people are so determined to knock this project. I would like to revisit this in a few years. Yes, I'm sure there will be some problems, but such issues are essentially inherent into the construction of any building, no matter the size or speed at which is was assembled. My theory is that people are insecure, and fearful about their position in the world. There are several Indians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Pakistanis, any number of people, that could all do your job, and likely better than you, if they were given the chance. However, they will not get that chance, for merit of their poverty, skin colour, or nationality. With greater globalization (which is inevitable, whatever the left/right would like to say) there will be greater equality. It's not going to be a leveling up for us, no matter the value that Thomas Friedman wishes to place on skilled labor and "roll-up-your-sleeves" work ethic. It has actually been surprisingly easy for me to reconcile with the fact that I will not be able to take from the world as much as the members of the previous generation did. I hope that I'm never so greedy as to turn my back on the principles of equality, or so sure of my country's superiority over others to wait, fascinated, with the sadistic hope that my pretensions of superiority will be confirmed. Ok. Once you have obtained a job, you may speculate about "the world." Until then, you don't have a valid approach. And I agree with Dupin, even if I would personally bump the time table up about 6 days a faster. To the underlined part, that is just plain wrong. Things built in China are utter [cabbage], and due to your lack of experience in the world, just in general, shows itself more clearly now. These building flaws do not happen in say, oh I don't know, America, Europe. China is trying to cut corners, and eventually they'll cut something they wish they hadn't. [/hide] Mate, have you ever been to China before? Have you seen the buildings? Take the 2008 Olympics for an example, all the building were top of the class, safe and sound, cleverly designed. Don't talk [cabbage] about someone you've never seen before, k? Don't take the one-sided news you Americans recieve, its called propaganda, and I guess it's working. Why don't you get some experience on this subject before you start generalizing things. Incidentally I have been to China and while Beijing was quite well maintained traveling just 100 miles inland reveals a third world country in which about a billion people live in abject poverty. Examining only the best, trophy projects of a nation provides no accurate comparison of overall standards.
