  1. They acted stupidly and without sufficiently careful consideration, not evilly (and even then, people have done far dumber things then misinterpret extraordinarily complicated financial instrument's riskiness). As such they don't fall anywhere near a "worst people" list.

    The Future

In a strictly physical sense, chemical reactions should be entirely predictable (and simulatible given enough resources) since everything is based upon a series of known laws.
  4. And one which has repeatedly voted to continue it's status as a US territory when given the option of independence or statehood.
  5. This smells like an advertising thread. Nevertheless, the view outside my window lacks fire and brimstone so I'm skeptical of this prophecy.
  6. This should go in tech & computers, but the TV should be fine - they really don't get terribly hot in most cases. So long you don't live in an area where the outside temperature regularly tops 100 degrees there should be no problems.
  7. Both sides are at fault. Fundamentalist religious elements in both groups prevent a peace solution that would actually stop the conflict.
  8. It's ultimately your decision. Justifications and/or reasons are not needed.

    Bathing

Generally I exercise and shower once a day during the school year as it's fairly cold outside and I don't need more then once daily. During the summer however twice per day is the norm, as I generally golf in the morning then head to the lab/art classes in the afternoon.

    Gun Control

For me it also boils down to freedom. But i think the difference between me and you is how far that freedom goes. Any reasonable definition of gun restrictions depends upon the actual statistics of what effect exactly they have on society. Given that no causal link exists between guns and homicides or deaths in general, the only reasonable conclusion possible is that they should not be restricted. Much as freedom of speech can only be abridged in exceedingly rare and extreme situations, so too is attacking the right to bear arms an extreme act.
  12. curious, what is this building called?
  13. I'm not so sure about that. In Florida, at least, if you do the IB program in high school and pass the test at the end, you are GUARANTEED admission into any, non-private state university. Nah, the IB program is considered identical to taking a similar number of AP courses for college admission and credit purposes. The main difference is that the IB diploma curriculum is standardized around a set number of courses, while students take individual AP classes, so it's possible to tailor the difficulty of an AP courseload to a much greater extent. A load of 20 AP classes over 4 years in high school would be far more difficult then the IB program, while taking 2 would be easier for instance.
  14. Depends. For applications where only tiny samples of DNA are available, the PCR does take several days. In cases where access to the body is possible however (like here) DNA tests take a few hours at most (as that's how long it takes the DNA fragments to migrate through the agarose testing gel).
  15. Good. Osama Bin Laden was evil, and his death is long overdue.
  16. I have just one question for you: are you an American or Canadian (AKA domestic) student, or are you from another country? Domestic versus international MIT admissions are quite different. As to your questions, once I know that I can answer them all.
  17. They do. Think about it - there are roughly 250 working days per year. On each of those days (for simplicity's sake) 1/250th of a nations' GDP is produced. 1/250 * 100 = .4% of GDP not being produced in the year due to that one day off. In the United States with its 13 trillion dollar GDP one statutory holiday represents 52 billion dollars of lost wealth.

    China > America

My family owns four cars. All of them are Japanese. My dad was a MechE. I'm a MechE. Americans make crap cars. By German and Japanese if you want a good one. Or you could take jobs from foreign companies that are actually good at making cars and give them to the [cabbage] companies back home. Considering that Ford has been leading in many quality surveys, such a broad statement would seem unwarranted.
  19. i support this concept. While TIF may not be the best place for such threads, people do use it for that purpose and between leaving people with no help or too much help, going overboard a bit is the best practical option.
  20. This. If there's no evidence that the data is being sent and used for nefarious purposes, nothing is wrong with this - all sorts of devices collect data regularly on movements, actions, and similar such activity. While installing an opt in/out switch on the phone would not be a bad idea, I don't see any evidence of wrongdoing on Apple's part.
  21. Football programs at most schools are revenue positive due to ticket sales. Spending more then that amount, I agreee, makes little sense, but cutting a self-supporting program is nonsensical. Removing union rights and instituting merit based pay & promotion practices would be the most effective way to balance school (or any other government entity) budgets, as salaries generally make up ~80% of a district's budget.
  22. This is essentially the idea here. While there are some issues associated with such a ban, given the small number of burka-wearers in France targeting them to ensure protection of French values and culture is not too bad an idea. Freedom of religion does not extend to that which is harmful to others.
