I liked protest the Hero's Fortress and loved Cynic's Traced in Air, but nothing else was really that good that I've heard this year.

Perhaps try Nevermore? Their album Dreaming Neon Black is excellent. Please don't recommend me any Death / Black metal.

For those of you questioning my choice of Dream theater songs, those are probably their easiest to get into.

Dream theater - A Change of Seasons Definitely my favorite song. My next favorite would probably be "Bleak" by Opeth, "A Trace of Blood" by Pain of Salvation, or "Trains" by Porcupine Tree.
