Is there a point? Is there a reason to live or die?
If you don't know the answer to that, you're probably not selfish enough.

Does Religion benefit?
I don't think it was said, but religion helps the elderly a great deal. For many, approaching the end is frightening and confusing. When a religion provides an answer or an extension (afterlife), I think it helps them cope with what is probably an incomprehensible finality.

Fatalism
This. Why care about Pluto? Many people do, its a science. Actually, that's a good question. I'm sure some unemplyed philosophy majors could tell you. One thing I dislike about ancient philosophy and thought is that a lot of it is now known to be wrong or just useless, unscientific speculation. It just seems unproductive.

How do i convince myself that something isnt unlucky?
I never quoted that :? Also, "Likely to bring misfortune" was the second definition for unlucky By that definition, what are you arguing? Because casinos are likely to bring misfortune; they manipulate the probabilities to make it so the house wins more often.

Likely to bring misfortune means that there is a higher percentage of failures than success. Probabilities are not so, they have equal percentages (atleast with the dice situation). You took what he said to mean "likely to bring misfortune" when he meant "marked by failure". In fact, he counters your post in the post you quoted:

Not luck. Only Probabilities. The person playing the game has hit the random 1/x chance on getting y bad roles That means it's not unlucky? http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/unlucky:

Wine and alchohol discussion
You know Irish coffee has Irish whiskey in it, right? I mean, try to imagine Bourbon coffee, yuck. Quite obviously yes, but just because it's called "Irish" simply due to the fact there's Whiskey in it doesn't mean it's that wholly Irish, it's not popular here at all. I guess I just don't get where the angst is coming from. It gets its name because it was created in Ireland using Irish whiskey, neither of those suggest popularity of the drink.

Anyone else ever feel like taking a year and just leave?
I've thought about doing that at some point. Although, I have a long way to go before I can hike the over 2,000 mile Appalachain trail.

Anyone else ever feel like taking a year and just leave?
If you just want to get away, I suggest working a seasonal job as a trail worker or park ranger for either a national or state park. If your a trail worker you can spend up to 4-5 10 hour days just building and maintenancing trails. If you work as a park ranger, it's a lot less manual labor and more supervision of the park with some interaction with vistors. That's also just a general suggestion to anyone looking for a good outdoor, independent summer job.

Just make sure you have all the right materials and knowledge before living in the wild or just backpacking around. Fun thread from another forum on what people would take with them to live in the woods for a year: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/foru ... .php?t=378

Closed. [DO NOT POST]
I start conversations without using a greeting sometimes (usually with a "did you know..." or "did you hear..."). Some people actually become temporarily confused when I do this. Ah well. On "random" humor, I find a lot of people try to copy the shock humor of Monty Python. DO NOT DO THIS. Very few people can pull this off and be funny and most people who try don't have a good sense of humor anyways.

Coffee! I love a good french roast and usually won't drink anything lighter than a medium roast. As for healthiest, well, coffee.

Nerves
I second this. A couple semesters ago I had a lot of presentations to give in the period of a few weeks all on subject matter I really enjoyed learning about. The first presentation I was nervous as hell, but with each one I became more comfortable and knew enough to easily answer any questions. Actually, I've heard that after you've done it enough times it becomes addicting, although that might be more for academic presentations.

What are labor laws in Texas? Because in NC you can get a worker's permit at 14 and a half. Granted, it will be tough finding work and your hours are restricted, but you might be able to do something. Of course, that's really only if your desperate. If you do that though, places to apply to are big movie theaters and other places that have high turnovers.

This is what is wrong with America.
I'm not sure I want to fully retire. I think I'll just work as a part-time lecturer at a University. I'd need something to keep me busy. Also, I probably won't have too much money or my grandkids will need money for college that I would want to try to help them pay for, and so on.

The modern automobile is now Japanese  . Yeah, with GM's "recent" poor performance, Toyota is now the biggest car company.
