  1. It all comes down to your budget. You'll pay a premium for a AGP card because they're old technology. We have a 7600GT AGP card and that can run all modern games fine on low-medium depending on the game at question. For low range, either a 7300GT from Nvidia or a X1650 from ATI. For mid range, I guess you have the 7600GT from Nvidia and the 2600PRO from ATI. Stepping up, you'd be looking at a 7800GS or 7900GS from Nvidia and a X1950 or 3850 from ATI.

  4. Don't use Windowblinds. Why pay for something you can easily get for free? Visual Styles in Vista are a little more complicated than XP, but after doing a few themes, it is quite easy to set up. First step, download VistaGlazz here. This is fully safe and works on SP1 and Plain Vista. Once downloaded, Run it as Admin and use the option to patch system files. Make a backup of said files before patching. (Not needed, but recommended). Restart PC. [hide=Second Step]How to Install a Custom Visual Style When you download and extract a custom Visual Style, you'll need to copy them into the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes directory, usually into a new folder: You'll want to make sure that the folder contains the visual style file within it, and not within a subdirectory of the theme folder: Note: Some visual styles are structured incorrectly and will have problems. Read this post for more information. Now that you've patched Windows and installed the theme, you need to open the Classic appearance dialog by right-clicking on the Desktop, choosing Personalize, then Window Color and Appearance. Then you can click the link at the bottom to open the classic appearance properties dialog: Now you can choose the theme in the list. Note that some themes are based off the Window Aero theme and will show the same name, so if one is selected then just choose the other one. You'll need to have Aero available in order to use a theme based on Aero, of course. At this point you should be able to see your new custom themes. Enjoy![/hide] Credits to HowToGeek for the second step. DeviantArt has some great Visual Styles for Vista and is where I got my VS from.
  5. Merged the post from General Discussion into this one as they both ask the same question. :)
  6. Locking this. I think for tips like this, use this thread as all little tips can be posted there. :) ~Mamong
  7. Returned, added you in. Fool, fixed up yours, just under TF2 now. :)
  8. Added you both in :D
  9. Moved to Tech & Computers. :)
  10. I wonder if encrypted sharing would still work under this. Most will probably just switch ISP's if they do file share though, bit of a dumb idea unless it is adopted across the board by all ISP's.
  11. Moved to Tech & Computers as you'll probably get better help here about this problem. :)
  12. Visual Styles in Vista :D [hide=July][/hide]
  13. Errdoth's build looks good, but you can substitute the Q6600 for an E8400. The E8400 is a dual core as opposed to a quad core. The difference is, the E8400 has a higher clock speed than the Q6600. So for multi core apps, a quad would do better. But for games and day to day work, I think you'd get better performance from the E8400. Both CPU's will perform great which ever way you go.
  14. It will run on the older FF's (1.5-2.0.x), you just need to download an older version, which can be done from that link provided.
  15. Updated upto this point. :)
  16. Not really, considering they're giving you a chance to play the full game. It's just to bring in more players. It's just like a demo, but instead of an unlimited time at one level, they give you limited time at the whole, full game. I think it's a great idea.
  17. Well, if it loads them into RAM to be quicker, I'll happily wait the 5-10 minutes to get everything running smoother. Thanks for the quick replies. :D
  18. No it is noticeable slowing. Things take a bit longer to open and get going, but you can link that to the fact they have to access the hard drive as well and svchost is also accessing it at the same time.
  19. I've got a problem with svchost[Caution: Executable File] on my laptop. When I first boot Vista and log in, svchost will sit there pinging my hard drive for about 5-10 minutes, slowing the computer. I checked the Reliability and Performance Monitor and it reports svchost using between 1-5mb a second, and my hard drive light is flashing like crazy. After about 5-10 minutes however, it all stops and I can continue using my computer as per normal. Is there any way I can fix this or will I just have to put up with it?
  20. Games wise, with 256mb of Dedicated Graphics Memory, it will run all those games with the exception of Age of Conan with absolute ease. Age of Conan will probably run, but it might need to be turned down a little. When looking at mice, in my opinion, especially playing games, get a full size mouse. The small notebook mice are shocking to game with.
  21. Leaving it here. The user does write later on in their post that they would like some help making money, after losing it. To the original poster, I advise that you remove the story/picture and leave just your question so people can come in and give you help easier. :)
  22. Just throwing in, I picked up a Lenovo notebook in Australia for $700 and had a 1.6ghz dual core, 1 gb RAM (upgraded to 2gb) and a Nvidia Geforce GO 7300. It's quite good. I can say from experience, a 7300 will run CSS on high with 50+ fps, CoD4 will run smoothly, at bare minimum. Halo 2 runs alright, I had it on low and it was playable. CoD2 runs fine, Team Fortress 2 runs average, it's playable. So, anything with a 7300 or above Nvidia wise should game fairly well for the games you mentioned. Try finding a notebook with an 8400GS or an 8600GS. They should game fairly well. Don't expect maxed settings on every game with awesome frames from a laptop that price though, but low-mediums smoothly, yes.

Own a Lenovo 3000 N200 series notebook. It is pretty good, plays CoD4 and Counter Strike so I can't complain. Vista is fine on it, but 2gb memory always helps.
  24. Let's get this cracking again eh? [hide=June][/hide]
  25. EDIT: Silly me, I forgot about the caching. All names have been retrieved from the cache so thankfully, all the names are there! :D
