Understanding How Bots Work
They're not necessarily being banned, Jagex has been doing a lot of skill rollbacks on people who bot. That way the person keeps playing and paying. It's more profitable than simply banning them. If you consider just the actual player who is botting to level up Jagex's skill-rollbacks are actually a decent idea. My perception of this is that they are making botting players climb a ladder that is ever moving downward and they are staying in the same location. What I wouldn't mind seeing is Jagex creating a public announcement (which would also be published in the Knowledge Base somewhere) to introduce, lay out and inform players of a system where they progressively roll back a botting players skills being misused. We all understand that once an account and any other accounts that were played on under the same IP are all red flagged for botting. We also know that players are also made to pay if they want their accounts unbanned. How, I don't necessarily understand and haven't seen anyone give a run down of how Jagex or the players interact to make this transaction. Once this has been done I'm curious how Jagex might handle gold farm bots. My whole idea of IP banning everyone from China still sounds good, but I can understand that the financial downfall would really hurt Jagex and therefore isn't a viable option.

I bet the whip vine will increase the whips slash attack from 82 to a solid 90 and add a +4 poison damage. EDIT: My intuition is from thinking of how a harmful vine might have pickers or thorns similar to briars or rose stems so it's going to obviously be a slash attack boost. The poison boost might be higher due to it being required to have a high slayer level.

05-Jul-2011 - Salt in the Wound
Anyone find it funny that f2p people wanted to see updates, now they get the odd inclusions such as these. They should be thankful to see Jagex is at least throwing them the occasional bone instead of letting them starve.

Understanding How Bots Work
The masses aren't the main problem. It's the gold farming companies that have thousands of bots running at any given time. They aren't worried about how "safe" it is to bot. They are only worried about their profits. If their programs break every update, they will have a much more difficult time obtaining whatever material they need to make a profit. Also, catching every one of their accounts and every account that has ever interacted with their accounts will be a major setback. Jagex at one point in the past IP banned everyone coming from Singapore due to them not respecting internet laws and a lot of credit fraud and hacking's were coming from that location. Maybe they could do this to those places?

Understanding How Bots Work
Yeah profiling would be good. I mean they could study them and pretty much figure out what I've already stated. Matter of fact its so simple that I wouldn't be surprised if Jagex is working on a way to handle the botting programs from a server side approach. This is why I have a hard time watching the community rant about it because its not very hard to see the bot programs approach and Jagex has to have something going on, but they just aren't unveiling it yet or its not quite finished.

Understanding How Bots Work
Yeah I think when doing some research I found some stuff hinting at that. But realistically I think Jagex would be taking a real load off of their shoulders by protecting their "assets" and attempts at botting by removing the ability of programers to have access to their models. I mean literally every model in the game has a code and some bots go as far as letting their users show the model wire frames.

Understanding How Bots Work
Many players stance towards Jagex progress in the game in relation towards working together wholly to stop bots has been a big issue rose up in every Runescape community. Whether or not Jagex should halt their actual content update and put 110% effort into their bot stopping research is what a good portion of the community seems to be screaming for out of Jagex. The issue I see is that Jagex understands that there will always be botters in a way most players do not. I fail to believe that Jagex isn't looking for ways to deal with these abusive programs and players, though, but in doing so effectively its going to take some time and probably some cooperation that most players will not be willing to cooperate in and I'll explain that later. To give you an understanding of what a bot looks for in the game and use let me give you a few variables: Variable #1: The game uses a coordinate system exactly the same to how clue scrolls work and every square on the map has a grid number. If you've played Runescape since the early days of RSC then you would definitely know that the jmods back in the day had a system available only to them where they could "teleport" to any location on the world map simply by entering a command phrase and the coordinates. Variable #2: Each and every piece of content has a code number. That means a monkfish, the chair in the bank, your house altar, the grand exchange clerk, and the walls of the bank all have codes. What bots use in their programs are player side model identifiers using the model numbers. An example of how Jagex accidentally messed up botters with models and their numbers was during an update when they changed the models of the operating winch to go down into the living rock caverns. Bot programs can look up and render the models and know where to click by looking them up by their model numbers. Due to Jagex either changing this particular model bots got caught up in a misunderstanding of how to handle that particular model. Variable #3: Everything that a bot needs is literally sent to your computer and stored in an encrypted file that is updated every time Jagex updates their servers. Because of this it makes it much easier for bot makers to correct their programs after updates. The only thing Jagex has done for this is threaten to use legal action through patents and claims of intellectual property, but this does little to actually prevent the bot makers from distributing their program. Jagex pay tear down sites, but in reality theyll just create another and keep distributing. The real issue to botting, being the head of the beast, is really that Jagex has made runescape information mostly player side due to it being a browser-based game. So if Jagex wanted to proverbially cut the head off the beast it wouldnt be to take legal action against bot makers. That would be similar to cutting off the hydras heads, but not burning the stumps. Jagex needs to burn the stumps of the wound by making their game completely server side. To further boost their protection they could implement something similar to how World of Warcraft monitors bot usage. WoW uses a program called Warden that scans your computer for spyware programs (bot programs classify as spyware). I suppose Jagex could work on creating a way for players to access server side information through a client that has such a program running alongside it. An issue Ive noticed the community has with handling this problem is that more often than not players do more complaining on Jagex way of handling the situation. Instead I believe we should be trying to work together to find a better foothold on how to help the community to understand how Jagex should be trying to correct the issue. By that I mean how Jagex could be controlling the variables mentioned. If we could get the community to understand how the bots work then we would at the very least have a legitimate reason to being angry with Jagex for not upping the ante on handling the botting issue. Should Jagex actually take in what Ive said here and gave players the option to play on a closed client I would be supportive and join in using it. If anyone who is knowledgeable in creating these types of anti-botting software and Jagex capabilities to replicating their own feel free to contribute to the conversation.

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
Would be a plausible idea, but... A teleport in the middle of a Castle War game? This is where my idea of it just being the locations, not the actual spot of the rock being teleport locations. Heck maybe Jagex's idea of tiers will make it to where t7 citadels will have a portal room with portals to all the locations. This would be most suitable for general community clans. PKing clans would be fine with just the edgeville spot.

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
I'm going to create a special thread for how articulate bots are... I'll have it posted hopefully in a half hour. Maybe someone with some knowledge on how to handle games such as these could offer some advice to halting bots.

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
I hope they actually implement those. I think having a somewhat universal travel option for the citadel would be great. They did it for the ge so why not the citadels.

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
No-one seems to have mentioned it, but there's a very easy teleport to the Clan Camp, activated by wielding your Vexilium and right-clicking it. See thats not so bad for a general access portal, but clans tend to focus on certain aspects of the game and having your citadel portal close by seems like a logical move on jagex part. For example having DGS clan portal at daemonhiem would be a great idea. So if clans weren't doing an event right away clans could be nearby working on the clan citadel while waiting to get their xp multiplier rings.

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
Hm I reread a couple areas and I think I am wrong. I can't help but think that there will be multiple portals to get there though.
-
Giant Rocks falling from the sky
Your misunderstanding me. They are saying we have dozens of portal hotspots to claim. For example maybe a mercy clan would have a portal hotspot at the ge. A castlewars clan would have a hotspot at castlewars. A Pling clan would have a hotspot at edgeville. get it?

Giant Rocks falling from the sky
No they didn't. They said they'd have things to suit all clan types, but nothing suggests more than 1 portal in. All odds would suggest one and only portal in will be in clan camp (ignoring possibility of a fairy ring or spell) especially since the rocks have largely fallen in quite awkward locations (cramped already lots of stuff etc.) From the July BTS: "Gather five clanmates who have membership and you will be able to complete the portal ritual, gaining entry to your clans very own citadel. Choose from four different layouts before deciding whether you want your citadel to be in glorious sunshine or perpetual night. Banners and flags fly the colours of your clan, and there are dozens of hotspots for you and your clan to make your own." I repeat start copying locations of the falling rocks. Hotspots to build features inside the Citadels. The quoted section clearly implies locations of the citadels. Jagex isn't creative enough with their coding to get past hotspot building.

I think what you all should do is list where all the rocks fell from and then we will know ecacty where every portal for the citadels will be located at. They mentioned that the citadels will be based all over in key locations for all types if clans. I'm smart I know. No need to point that out. List please?!

30-Jun-2011 Introducing: Clan Citadels
Anyone notice on the little island that it looks like they were sketching a portal there? I hope that it has a portal AND teleport access.

30-Jun-2011 Introducing: Clan Citadels
I'm hoping the citadels offer perks and whatnot similar to how WoW's clans work. Because of the potential scope of this update I'm hoping this isn't just designed for warring clans. I fully expect to see a teleport option, possibly a clan bank, a regular bank, and skill training perks for training in the area. I could see the perks getting larger and more grandiose with how long the clans existed and how much has been completed within the citadel. Maybe access to the perks would be controlled by either rank or length of time within the clan.

Ah see first piece of proof that the YouTube vid didn't cover all the loyalty rewards. I think that pic is going to be a "breath fire" emote.

Road to max
You sound so much like me with xp and money and even farming. Really I hate to waste your time with this post, but add me in game when you get a chance. We could talk over a few things. I too am on the same road to maxing (maybe a bit further along) and wouldn't mind discussing it with you. If your like me I think you should get the miners outfit from lfm, use your Titan, skip using urns because they fill too frequently, and possibly get a d pick if you can invest in it. When if comes to skilling I tend to have an efficient yet relaxed approach to things.

23-Jun-2011 - Introducing: the Members Loyalty Programme!
I'm hoping this was more of a sampler than an actual preview. I would like more creative auras brought out on release, but since it's in its beginnings I can't really impose these expectations. And, speaking for myself, I'm not overreacting. Don't say "everyone" or absolute words because it comes off insulting to most people.

23-Jun-2011 - Introducing: the Members Loyalty Programme!
Seems jagex is using their loyalty rewards system to introduce culture items. Samba = African Saxton = British Eastern = Orientals Dervish = Middle Easterners Notice the cannon is shooting green, brown and purple smoking cannonballs. If you catch it at the right second you can see a purple ghost-like figure shoot up out of the cannon. When I saw the green smoke I thought of poisoned cannonballs, but now I'm not sure.
