May 9, 200719 yr Wow. How terrible. :( I didn't know things were that bad. I really hope for the best. :( They aren't half as bad as the article implies. Granted, the article implies that people here are clawing their way down dirt roads with their clothes in tatters just trying to get to the nearest puddle. Which they aren't. May 9, 200719 yr It's bad. A lot of rural towns have been in this drougt for seven years. And it's finally reached the costal towns enough to make it hurt, a lot. And if you're wondering why we aren't desalinizing water - blame the government. Too cocky to realise they actually need to help till the state government essentially begged for help :uhh:
May 9, 200719 yr Many Australian's ponder what the actual main cause of this thirsty drought is. The answers have been in front of our eyes as world temperatures have been rising due to global warming, Australia is drifting north towards the hot equator, increase of demand for water for the growing population and over mismanagement of preserving water. I disagree with the article concerning the above paragraph. Its got little do to with global warming its got to do with the prolonged El Nino effect which cause drought, and Australia is only drifting less than a metre a year, so thats an absurd statement the article made in determining the cause of the drought. Though the increase demand of water and growing population I can agree with. Besides that the article is not exaggerated and there is a major problem in the Eastern and Southern states of Australia concerning drought. We also need to note that its not all of Australia effected, as the North Western Australia has been receiving much higher than average rainfall lately after the recent cyclones up there.

Same with north queensland and just recently (probably 2 weeks-ish ago now) there was flooding and crazy rain up the top end of the northern territory.
May 9, 200719 yr They're surrounded by ocean...Are they not desalinating sea water to use if its REALLY that bad? thats what Im thinking. anyone ever heard of pipes to the interior of the country? Btw i live on the 4th biggest freshwater lake in the world, no water problems here. Lake Erie isn't the 4th largest I don't think  Where on there do you live? I have a condo up there
May 9, 200719 yr im an aussie, a proud one, and im not a city guy either. i live in the country, and have dial-up intenet (hate the s***) because adsl and saterlite is the only form of broadband available and has only been available for a little while. (i would have adsl but my dam dad thinks theres no advantage in it) as far as im concerned Australia is sufuring a bad drought, but my grandpa (he was born in 1921 i beleive, hes 86 i think) said they had a drought like this back when he was a kid. he also said that after it ended it rained so hard u could barely go out side (havent they said somethin recently about a weather pattern ending and we can expect rain). its a natural process of drought about every 80 years, but it has been worsened by climate change. australia is not dying, its just having a bad period just like teenagers have mood swings (great days, then bad days) cos of there hormones or whatever. it will be better eventually, but we just ahve to make it through. i feel sad for the poor farmers farming in the next 100 years, the next drought will be much worse then this one. lets hope we wake up to climate change!
May 9, 200719 yr Author So... Basically, they published that without any proofreading? That aside, the whole premise of the article is fallacious. Australia is most certainly not "dying". That is an absurd statement. The drought may well be easing in NSW, and could improve in the other states as well in the short term. Face it, droughts are natural phenomena. You can't just shake the global warming stick and then expect things to suddenly change because you've identified the "problem". It's a very unprofessional piece. You don't cite the source of your claim that a farmer commits suicide every four days. I'm sure it would have had some mention in more mainstream news if that was the case. In fact, you don't cite any credible research to support your arguments. I'm not saying they're strictly incorrect, but right now they're nothing more than wild generalisations. The language you use doesn't flow, either. It sounds awkward, and your last two paragraphs really wouldn't look out of place on a Year 8 geography essay. Sounds like doomsaying, really. Read this article. http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?ar ... onal_news/ I gathered my information from personal knowledge and news articles. Yes you might say that the drought will abruptly end in downfall. But have you taken the fact that the natural ecoystem has changed? Logging has removed tree's in the Murray-Darling basin which doesn't allow transpiration to occur, weirs and dams that has conversely changed the water flow and the natural ecosystem that thrives on natural flooding. May 9, 200719 yr In case you were confused, Jason, I wasn't questioning whether or not the drought has lasted that long. I just said that I couldn't imagine it because I live in an area in the US that has never suffered a drought before. I've never had any restrictions on my water usage. The restrictions are terrible. :( And I hope that things start to get better for the people of Australia.
May 10, 200719 yr They knew about it for years and years and never acted on it. I'd sure love to tell them where to stick the buckets. At least they lowered my tax deductions each week so I wont be as harsh. I can now afford to buy more buckets. The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.
May 10, 200719 yr I had no idea the water situation was so bad there, I guess it's jsut something we don't hear about. My city has no restrictions like that, and I live in a freakin desert . Gamertag: King Arizona

May 25, 200719 yr Author Aww man... Things are geting worst.. .Lvl 6 water restrictions is considered to be applied. I think Brisbane is the worst hit area so far that I know off. May 25, 200719 yr Aww man... Things are geting worst.. .Lvl 6 water restrictions is considered to be applied. I think Brisbane is the worst hit area so far that I know off. But the farmers are suffering even more. Yes. Our dams here in SE Queensland are below 20% total capacity. Worst of any major city in the country, I'm pretty sure. This blows. Rain Goddamit!!!! -.-
May 25, 200719 yr Better make that "pour" because when it rains here nowdays it's like spitting on a hotplate :uhh: The rain is evaporating before it hits the ground basically that's how little a difference it's making when it does.
May 25, 200719 yr One Australian farmer commits suicide every four days, defeated by the country's worst drought in 100 years which has left them with dust-bowl paddocks and a mountain of debt. I love how media plays to make things real when there's a lot more reasons behind it. They are truly and utterly pathetic sometimes. The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

May 25, 200719 yr [lmao] QUICK THE AMERICANS MUST SAVE AUSTRALIA... Most houses dont even have a water supply we have to fetch it from the river Wow. You're a fool who is too ignorant to realize how good you really have it. That's your typical American teenager for you. And then there are intelligent(and non-ignorant) American Teens like me who realize how much trouble this world is in. North Korea and Iran building Nukes, Austrailia in a mass drought, expected to be a horrible hurricane season here in the states. And you can't even think I'm some nerd who has huge glasses and studies all day, because I don't. I just find it interesting to see how the world is doing and what people are doing to fix it... They're surrounded by ocean...Are they not desalinating sea water to use if its REALLY that bad? thats what Im thinking. anyone ever heard of pipes to the interior of the country? I have a condo up there\ Erie is 5th, Huron is 4th, Michigan is 3rd, Superior is 2nd and some lake in Russisa(forgot the name) is 1st. Pretty much if you live anywhere near the Great Lakes(which I used to until October '06 you had no need to worry about water). Good luck Austrailia, may the rain come to you. :D
May 25, 200719 yr Wow, that's not good. I really hope the AU gov't takes up a stronger use of desaltion (sp?) of water. I believe it could really help things.
May 25, 200719 yr I havent had rain in 2 weeks, and i have been kind of happy, but 7 years must suck. Isn't it winter in AUS? If so, why is it "so hot it evaporates" I shall take my flock underneath my own wing, and kick them right the [bleep] out of the tree. If they were meant to fly, they won't break their necks on the concrete. So, what is 1.111... equal to?10/9. Please don't continue.
May 26, 200719 yr I havent had rain in 2 weeks, and i have been kind of happy, but 7 years must suck. Isn't it winter in AUS? If so, why is it "so hot it evaporates" Because of its geographic location.

If so, why is it "so hot it evaporates" Thats not always the case, it was a slight exaggeration, well maybe at the top end of the country but not down in the South East where we're experiencing drought. It just doesn't rain often. :(
May 26, 200719 yr Winter - what is this winter you talk of? Even in Brisbane it shouldn't get around the 30's this time of year, but it has for the better part of the month, been hitting close to 30 :-? Summer practically lasted till mid april. And then limped into may :|
May 26, 200719 yr this might just be all conspiracy but it seems to go with the topic.. Shocking reports from the Kremlin today are showing that just under one week from Australian Prime Minister Howard̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s urgent plea to his citizens to pray for rain to fall on their drought ravaged Nation, the Government of Australia has entered into secret negotiations with the United States and their Commonwealth allies for the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâproposed̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ evacuation of upwards of 11 million of its 20 million citizens. To the tragedy currently unfolding upon the World̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s smallest Continent of Australia we can read as reported by Britain̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Independent News Service in their article titled "Australia's epic drought: The situation is grim", http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1006.htm
