BoBTFish
Is it just me, or is there a very slightly similar taste with carots and mangos?? Sounds silly, but I just had dinner, and had both (not at the same time). I swear they have a slightly similar aftertaste on the back of the tongue. I do think mango contains a small amount of the same orange dye as carots (the aptly named carotene) but I didn't think that had any flavour??? loaf2000
Im pretty sure the orange in carrots is natural and not a dye. pixel sig and avatar by me.
Harrington
Hmm, I've visited thousands of threads on hundreds of forums over the years... gotta say, this topic is definately a first lol ;) I don't think they taste similar, but hey.... whatever the matrix tells you man ;)

BoBTFish
I know it is a bit random, but I'm sure there is just a tiny resemblance there. And Loaf2000, sorry, it's because it was mentioned in the dyes section of my chemistry A level. It IS a natural colouring but chemists consider it a dye basically because all it does is make things orange. The carrots were just boiled and the mango wasn't prepared at all, just fresh (well it had been in the fridge for a day or so). Maybe I'm going nuts and tasting random things, but I ate all the mango so I can't even compare them again. Oh well :?

The_Dragon_Reborn
I've seen some pretty messed up threads in my days here, but his is prbably that most bizzare, and most random I have ever seen. I have never tasted a mango and carrot in the smae sitting so I cannot tell whether they taste the same. ~~Let The Dragon ride again, on the winds of time~~I've always felt as if I'm the only person who can understand the concept of sarcasm on the internet. rocketman089
I read somewhere that carrots are only orange because the dutch bred them to be that way. Is there any truth in that? Gamertag: King Arizona
StrOwez
:-s A carrot is juicey as well as mango, but I think it's more sweet than a mango. A friend to all is a friend to none.
BoBTFish
I read somewhere that carrots are only orange because the dutch bred them to be that way. Is there any truth in that? Yes, originally wild carrots were white or purple, and tasted horrible, so they did some selective breeding. http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/history.html
Sumpta
I really don't have anything to add, but I am so loving this thread. In regards to the history of the carrot: you gotta hand it to the Dutch, they are persistent.
xxept0
It's quite possible... Carotene.... They extract some by product produced by fruits which give them their taste right? To make artificial flavouring. I guess it's not impossible... But please...... Why associate my mangoes with.... CARROTS???? My lovely mangoes.... Don't worry, i won't let the bad man touch you!
IGoddessI
Haha this thread made my day. Ragen
I think I'm the first to say that I know exactly what you mean. The taste he's trying to describe is the bitter sort of carrotty nastyness that you also find in celery sometimes and to a lesser degree sweet potatoe. If I were to describe the flavour it would have to be as 'dirty orange'. Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar! warri0r45
I don't know whether it means they have any kind of similarity in taste but they do both have carotenoids, as do quite a few fruits and veg. Anyway read about carotenoids. NOW! http://www.all-foods-natural.com/articles/greatness-of-carrot.html
