You can see stars in the daytime

Featured Replies

A common misconception is that you cannot see stars during hours when there is a large amount of daylight. While this is true when you just look into the sky with your eyes alone, there is one very small change you can make so you can see stars in the daytime. Simply cup your hands around your eyes. This will cast a shadow around your eyes, and allow you to see stars. If you don't believe me, just try it. The reason this works is that, as you know, light from a star travels across space until it reaches us where we can see it. The light you're seeing that creates the image of the star is actually light that is right at your eye. By cupping your hand around your eyes, you are making this light more visible by blocking the daylight that washes out the star light.

Note: I'm talking about stars other than the sun. This may seem painfully obvious to many of you, but others are kind of slow to catch on.

I thought the stars disappeared and went to sleep when the sun came up :uhh:

Yes, the sun is a star but I'm obviously referring to the other stars in the sky.

I didn't think I had to point out that I was referring to stars other than the sun. I thought most of you had enough common sense to figure that one out.

Yeah, and we all thought you had enough common sense to realise that we don't give a smeg.

So you don't give a smeg that you can see stars (other than the sun) in the daytime?

You know, when you just repeat what everyone says, but in the form of a question, it doesn't make you sound smart.

But to answer your question (again), no, I don't, and I can confidentally say many people do not.

But you do realize that it's possible with the method I stated above, right?

Not going to try.

Anyway, I can see stars in the daytime without cupping my hands around my eyes (and no, I'm not talking about the sun either :P ).

Living at 65 degrees north latitude in the winter, it's really rather easy.

i really don't see why you didn't post this in your own "did you know" thread. it seems kind of silly to waste more precious forum space on this.

Cool.

That itself is funnier than the rest of the entire thread.

I posted in it but my post had nothing to do with this thread.

Lol at Bubsa and Nad having a big whinge over spamming on the off-topic, when you're just encouraging him, you took the time to post five posts each on this crap thread (each of which, consisted of a sentance, maybe two if you were making it look like you were trying).

Oh Em Gee, someone wasted my time, "Lets wave ban stick in his direction :ohnoes:" but, instead of doing the smart thing, and ignoring him so his topics will get no replies, and fall off the first page as only a topic of this calibre should. I will continue to bump it up, cause after all, I do get a hard on from my awesome post count, and only strive to push it further.

And to the OP, maybe you should stick this stuff in one of those awesome FWD: emails, you know how much everyone loves them.

I know everyone else is being mean to you, but I actually find that pretty interesting if it's true. I'll try to remember to try it tomorrow when it's sunny.

I am also sort of interested by this. It's funny though, I can now see stars in the day, yet people in New York still can't see the stars at night. Not living in a city FTW!

Snopes.com says you're a liar.

vraptor_con_small.jpg

I just tried this, how cool am I?

I always wondered what happened to stars during daytime, fairly obvious their light was overpowered by the sun.

I found it interesting but I found it even more interesting when I read it the first time you wrote it on the did you know thread  8-)

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.
