Customized weapon? Should it be done?

Is this really a debate? Shouldn't this belong in Bugs/Suggestions? :-k

Anyway, it'd be nigh impossible to program... But do you mean like add special enchantable tips to the weapons, sort of like the Crossbolts?

The argument 'for' depends entirely if the type of customisation is either "enchantment" or "free modification".

We've already seen enchantment in the game, though what happens isn't the item being upgraded but replaced (you'll get this if you're a game programmer). For instance, you can enchant a sapphire ring to turn it into a ring of recoil; The ring of recoil MIGHT be an enchant sapphire ring but it's actually an entirely new item on its own. This is the system Jagex currently uses.

The latter is similar to a more advanced game such as Morrowind or Final Fantasy VII (to pick popular examples): These games, while having a set number of items, allowed you to modify them in a way to give you special abilities or enhance the item itself. Jagex might implement this but it is highly time-consuming and considering the majority of players (members), drop their rune weapons as soon as they get their hands on a dragon weapon it's more of a "filler" update which takes too long to implement... They'd have to modify the equipment system altogether!

I'm for the first and against the second. :-$

"300 programmers make their futile but glorious last stand against 1000000 angry players in The battle of Misthalin. They fight for honor, glory and new content sacrificing themselves so that their game may live on. This is Madness! This Is JAGEEEX!"

What about weapon trees? This is incorporated in games like Monster Hunter. Basically, a weapon can be upgraded to higher attack power by handing it to a shop with the materials and money required to upgrade it. Sometimes it can only be upgraded once, whereas some weapons can have 4 or 5 different upgrades. So even though there is a set path weapons can be upgraded along, hundreds of weapons can be included in the game.

Up to rune? No point at all then. Little nubs would probably not be able to enchant/updrage their weapons yet, and when they would be able to, they would have no use for rune anymore.

Agreed, if a mechanism such as this was to come into effect, it would have to include the highest weapons to make any sort of difference.

I dunno about customisable weapons, as opposed to just more of them. One thing I've always noticed about RS is its narrow-minded nature. If you wanna be a mage, there's only one way to go - ancients. Ranger - Crystal Bow. Warrior - Abbysal Whip. OK... there's other weapons, but can they really compete? I don't think so.

Not to sound like a broken record, but one of the great things about Pok̮̩̉̉mon and lots of other successful RPGs is the fact you can use literally 100s of combinations, and everyone of those tactics has the potential to be feasable. Such a choice doesn't exist in RS... and for this reason I actually barely recognise it as an RPG as opposed to an adventure game.

Like Sharane said, there are two ways to look at this. I'll talk about weapon enhancement/modification. What I would like is something like Diablo II has: Socketing.

Maybe there could a rare artifact which is untradeable, allows to you visit it a npc to have him/her socket your weapon or you can do it through smithing with x lvl requirement.

There has to be things to be socketed. There could be rare gems with different quality accquired through mining, there could also be jewels with different properties when socketed, like some could have something like x% chance to knockback opponent, stun for x seconds, hit twice etc. Gems would on the otherhand have standard properties, increasing with quality, maybe lifesteal could work. You have to socket both gems or jewels through the same npc or done through smithing. The socketed weapon is then untradeable, has a maximum possible amount that can be socketed, also store price raised so you don't lose it easily.

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

Yeah that is what I had in mind for it. In my suggestion, basically I created a table of smithing and crafting requirements to add a gem to a sword or battle-axe, which is more or less the same principal as "socketing." Ah, the good ol' days of D2... Too bad that game is so easy...

Ginger Warrior, I agree with you. There isn't much choice in weapons, though I would have to say that Karil's is more preferable than crystal. Weapon customization would be a great idea, though I think it shouldn't be too complex; maybe some sort of speed or power upgrade.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

ONLY if the customization comes from drops AND once customized the weapon is untradable.

the untradeable bpart is good and some will come from drops, you would also be able to specialize them with different gems or other things.

Why not? Im sure jagex would love it. People would waste their life getting money to buy the best upgraded items.

after that happens the rant forums would fill up saying they need to be less because they are scared objects will go down in price casuing world chaos...or they just do what you said.

Yeah, it should definitely be untradable or else rich people would buy loads of upgrades for their weapons.

We have to 'dissue' wether customizable weapons are a good idea. Well I think it's not because if I bought the +80 to max hit upgrade I oculd 1-hit everybody.

I took the freedom of inventing my own upgrade, since you forgot to post them.

I would like the idea, but it would be quite difficult to program due to the vast number of different weapons...

Even if they did it, I would rather the 'upgrade items', like enchanted gems and such, to be quite rare-ish. Not as rare as a santa, but not as rare as whips. Drops from many monsters could give you this item and random chest across RuneScape could hold them too (not as vauleable, but good for beginners).

This is exactly what I've been wishing me for all my yea- I mean months of Runescape but due to the massive ammount of data and programming it would take, I'd say it wont be done or it'll either be done in about 2-3 years. :|

Id like the idea, but only if, as was mentioned before the weapon become untradeable.

But i dont think jagex will release or even think about that in any near future...they whined about the bracelets slot so much, now imagine a weapon socket and all those different combinations...lol
