DAG 2? The right way.....just some thoughts tip art boards

Featured Replies

Recently I have been heartened by the number of people attempting to do larger than sig work that has nothing to do with making a quick fistfull of rs gp. Building ARTISTS rather than just making cash is a great part of what this board has always been about.

I wonder if it is time for another shot at the old DAG board (Digitial Art Group for those who wonder).

THe problem with the old DAG is that it was exclusive. That hurt feelings and caused problems, and also made it to where few people posted. Yet there were some great points about the DAG. You could get real critiiques there.

Posts such as Keiphus' WIP, or the daily sketch thread, etc. didn't dissapear in 25 minutes under a pile of signature stands.

I recognize that sig making is great fun, a good source of cash, and I have made many sigs in my time here. But for those of us wishing to hone our skills a bit and keep some of our friendships alive it would be good to have a board to post more ambitious projects. Also, the traffic on this board is high, and it is a good place for beginners to mid-level artists to get real feedback. Most of the really great art boards are either not well trafficked or are for pro's only. (You can post on some, but watch out if ya do). Our little board here has always been inspiring to me, and a great place to ask what would be considered dumb questions on other boards.

So here is what I am proposing:

A sticky that links to a new forum where non-sig projects would be posted.(a redirect link basically) It could be 3d, drawings, pixel, anything. Just not sigs, and sig shops, and sig rates etc.

This board would be for ANYONE to go to. Not limited, not screened, etc. like the old DAG was. In other words it would be a sub forum, not a user group that you have to sign up for. That was positively bad for the boards. To avoid opening old wounds it could be called the "Tip Art Board."

If this is just not workable I suppose an OPEN user group would be fine too. Just not as much traffic.

It could also be the home of the daily sketch thread, daily photo thread, etc. We could have tutorial links to drawing lessons, shading lessons, tips, etc. It would be great!

Let me know if you all think this would work. Just post your name in support of it! Perhaps the admins would consider it.

Sounds like something I'd be interested in. I'd certainly visit it more than here as I have quit runescape pretty much and have no desire to make sigs for cash anymore.

There are a great number of your type, and we are growing day by day. It would mean a few more headaches for the admins than the old board did because a user group could be modded without much work from them. I even modded the old dag for a stint, and I guarantee they wouldn't make me a regular mod :)

I know the reopening of the dag was proposed in the tip (post scape) era but it was an exclusive one again, and I think that would have no chance of working.

There is the other option of having a seperate section on TIF for sig shops - but if the new DAG was set up i'd join for sure.

Well the concept is that it is not a JOIN thing. But you would be welcome to come by and participate!

i think what we meant was, we'd be active members

logo.jpg

i already tried to set something like that up on TIF, but GSW said he wan't sure if that was a good idea, and that would work, and they weren't ready for it. Ofcourse they might be now, but if you are gona just set up some random free board up, i don't think i will participate that much. If you were able to incorparate it as TIF section, and have the same result as the TIF popularity i would join.

Yes it would have to be a sub forum on the tip system.

And wyrm, that I saw in a quick review, never really commented on the subject. But Azzy, Pup, Keiphus, and I did. However, we all thought the biggest issue was the exclusivity which lead to

a. hurt feelings

b. slow down of the main media board

c. Not enough posts in the DAG

this would avoid that, and still give a chance for more critiques AND would be a place where new folks could learn. THey just wouldn't learn about SIGS.

Actually the last go around...found here.....

Raenond said he would support it. But that was as a usergroup, not a new forum. We will have to see what he says about that. It would eliminate the drawbacks of the old system though and provide more space for both sig makers and those wanting to learn art. If that would not be doable, I suppose an OPEN user group with no restrictions and self registration would work alright as an alternative. It would be less load on the mods that way.

I like the idea.

An art board as accessible as all the other public boards but for non-sig work only.

And a mod to remove the sig posts that will get in somehow....

That's gonna happen all the time :S....My main fear with this is that some people are just too damn stubborn to learn how to truely do anything. I figure we'll get a lot of wallpaper size pieces that are just like a clouds render and motion blur. If this was going to happen and have its own forum it would be mandatory that it has the classes that have been brought up time and time again. If people truely want to get better and develop their skills then they need to learn. Otherwise, it will just be the media board will nasty sigs with just bigger resolutions

I like the idea, but it seems to me that a seperate forum created by someone here would be better, as it was before. This way members can do their own moderating, and it could be made to exactly what they wish. The only purpose of Tip.it in this operation would be to advertise the forums.

Does photography count? :P *

a. yes photos count...I mentioned the daily photo thread.

b. Actually it was never a seperate board for the official smg or dag. Tip won't advertise for a group they have no control over and which might or might not be insecure. It was a tip usergroup.

c. That is not to say there were not other off scape attempts...dabu4u (I think he has a rune fansite now with a media board), elite graphics, um,.....I forget the other one we all went to for a bit....er....it will eventually come to me....

But in general those fail to get the numbers.

As for people posting large wallpaper size sig-like creations....yeah, could happen. Not sure that can be helped, but at least the shops, contests, fake pics, "I saw zezima in game" etc. posts are out.

I like the idea.

Yes i would be worried about that too.

I'd love to have it split into different parts of the board though. A section for abstracts, landscapes, pixels, ect. That way we could have maybe a few tutorials done by some people (I'd gladly do a terragen tutorial if this went underway) And if you were only interested about 1 thing it would be there.

It would be an interesting thing for sure. if it works or not is all up to the future :) But hey, all i know is it wouldn't hurt trying.

:P

i know the board would be meant for all artists who wish to improve skills but as ryan said many younger artists will constantly be posting cloud renders and so forth i think

maybe entry is needed, but all are exepted as long as they show a yurn to improve so perhaps a before and after, or an Oficial entry piece, those who are unwilling to do so, obviously show no respect for the board and in m opinion should not be permitted

Yes an entry peice would be very good, with no premade renders allowed. I'm sure Maladrin and I coul contribute some tutorials.

id love this, i really want to get better at sketching, and that would provide the perfect oppurtunity for me

i would also like to learn how to make abstract and stuff like that

big thumbs up :D :D :D :D

thanks to Etexbleu for the sig

Interesting... doesn't matter if it's a usergroup or an open forum... we should just take what we can get for the time being... then maybe it can grow from there? I'd definitely be interested... I think it would be cool (once I'm allowed to) to show you guys some of the stuff I get to work on. :)

you mean it's a board were i could ask a question about brushing or something and actually get an answer. cause i have so much trouble with making animal fur.

  • Author

yeah, room for crits, daily sketch threads, tutorials on brushing, whatever!

It would be a great mid level art haven where there would actually be TRAFFIC.

make this idea after i remove ps lol. i was sick of pixel and abs lol

doh...just posted my work for the daily sketch in the wrong spot

Sounds fine. I still, however, feel that the main conveyance of the board should be the exchange of knowledge. Why? Because otherwise you'll have 30 topics concerning 3000*1000 "wallpapers" that were made in 10 minutes by someone whos main goal in art is.. 'Make it reeeaal shiny!', whom will most likely get pissed at you if you even offer friendly advice because, god knows, their art is "Om1gawdly el33t!!!11". I believe it would probably be best to leave "showing off" in exclusive threads, unless you're asking for advice or conveying a point.

A place to share knowledge, and learn about art. A place where it doesn't matter if you hate the current style of art floating around the board, you'll still be treated as a fellow artist. ( ) A new home completely devoid of people who think merging random layers of random stuff with random layer styles is an art.

It'd be hard to achieve, but worth it.

Although, considering my prior experience with DAG, and what I thought of it in the end, I'm all up for this, actually.

However, I think a sort of entry piece should be mandatory - because, let's face it, it will otherwise be flooded with "big cloud render pieces with overlayed premade-brushes ontop".

Yes, it will probably hurt peoples' feelings, but I think it's necessary, none the less. You could place the lath (correct word?) quite low, so that you don't have to be an expert to be allowed in.

Meh, just my thought on the matter...
