If you're a game-industry analyst looking to get some free publicity, the easiest way seems to be to issue a provocative press release predicting the victor of the next-gen console war. Case in point: The Yankee Group, a Boston-based firm that today made a bold forecast about which of the big three console makers will come out on top.

 

 

 

Who's the lucky company? Despite widespread unhappiness with the PlayStation 3's high price, the Yankee Group predicts that Sony will come out on top. "Microsoft is off to a fast start, launching the Xbox 360 nearly 12 months before the PlayStation 3," the company said in a statement. "However, by the time third-generation consoles reach market maturity in 2011, the PlayStation 3 will once again be the market leader."

 

 

 

How badly does the firm think Sony will beat its competitors? The Yankee Group is forecasting that Sony will sell 30 million PS3s over the next five years in North America, attaining a 44 percent market share. It sees Microsoft coming in second with 27 million units, or a 40 percent market share, which it will attain by "put[ting] significant price pressure on Sony during the PS3's lifecycle." As for Nintendo, the company predicts the Wii will keep the same roughly 16 percent market share it currently holds by selling 11 million Wiis over five years.

 

 

 

"With a growing installed base of connected consoles, content owners are beginning to recognize the potential video game consoles offer as a distribution channel," said Michael Goodman, Yankee's senior analyst for media and entertainment strategies. "Additionally, these platforms will serve as a strong medium for advertising, validating the growing market for in-game and around game advertising."

I don't forsee Ps3 winning, they will do well but I highly doubt they will win. Xbox 360 already has some awesome games in the making, namely Prototype, Halo 3, Darkside, and other good games I can't remember right now. For Ps3 to even have a chance of catching up on the 360 there line up is going to have to change, and the price is going to have to be cut drastically.

 

 

 

Out of the people I know(adults and kids) none of them(even the fanboys) have that much money lying around to buy one.

 

 

 

Also, they don't say why the Ps3 will win, just that it will win.

I say the Wii or 360 will win. Wii has sold 3 times as many consoles as the Ps3 has sold in the same amount of time, not to mention it's a GameCube also..I only say the 360 is competing because, let's face it, it has a truckload of great games on the horizon and more power than the Wii.

 

 

 

The Ps3 is too expensive, doesn't have any great games out yet that other consoles don't have (besides resistance)..and just other minor things keeping it from number 1.

It's on gamespot, it must be true.

Remember that the ps3 has much better hardware than the 360, and much more so than the Wii. As a result, it will age easier than the other two, being able to outperform either system when more advanced software comes out. If the 360 and Wii don't stomp out the ps3 when they have the lead (now), they might find themselves in a tough fight once their software support starts looking weak.

 

It's only a possibility though, I'm a 360 fan myself.

I think this might be the atari 5200 again. They made it to overtake there past console and failed imensly. I think unless sony cut the price DRAMATICLY its going to fail and the ps2 will rule the supreme console (which it is :D (in my opinion))

I agree with everything but those two statements. Sqenix hasn't said they would release KH3 for that particular system, because it is doing bad, they are not sure; either Wii or PS3. Plus, Final Fantasy has been leaning with Wii and NDS, so that is unsure. All of the games for the PS3 are switching over to other consoled. I wish Sony would have not rushed the release...

 

 

 

However, despite FF and KH and some other games, Sony isn't really my thing. Microsoft and Nintendo are better, imo. Sony excels in systems, but I don't like any other products. Guess we'll see who wins, PS3's *cough*100 dollar*cough* price drop sounds like crap, they should lower it. Then, they are going to negate the 600 dollar pricey one, and put the 499$ one on the market...Anyway, all I know is that it has potential, and if they don't use that potential they will fail.

If there were no awesome graphics I guess they wouldn't play video games. Like you said, good games make a system, not awesome graphics lousy gameplay. Since launch, the Wii has sold 9 million consoles..the ps3 has sold upwards 3 million. the wii has sold almost 3 times as many..and the 360 has only sold 11.7 million consoles. The Wii is selling the most right now..considering how long the 360 has been out.

 

 

 

I would bet on either the Wii or 360. Right now, Sony doesn't stand a chance..they need to change things. If they don't, those 94 million Ps2 owners could end up with a Wii or 360 :wink:
