Why do so many believe the 360 is "at the end of its race"? Is it because the PS3 finally has some good games on the horizon, and thus the 360 logically is done for? Reminder: the 360 has a better install-base than the ps3, and even though the ps3 has some good games in the future, the 360 has much more for it coming up soon. I would expect 360 profits to sky rocket by November, since a lot of the blockbuster titles will release by then, as well as the rumored price cut. And it isn't as if they're all over, they 360 still has games scheduled, and will continue getting them far into the future.

It's not to say the ps3 doesn't stand a chance, of course it does. And the Wii may be selling well now, but the "wii-craze" will soon wear off, and then the Wii will fall short in the next gen wars.

Life is a joke. Yeah, I don't get it either.

the wii sales are quite low now.

you fail. In terms of sales the wii has quite frankly blitzed the other 2.

Due to low stocks...

If they cut their prices drastically and actually have more than 1 supposedly good exclusive game, then maybe they will come out on top, but if they keep up with the crap they are pulling now, it'll be almost impossible for them to have any hopes of even coming out 2nd.

Anyone else hear about how they are pulling the lower priced PS3s from the US?

They're replacing it with another version with more harddrive space. Plus the price cut. -.-

All the exclusives and good games are being released for the 360 currently. The only game that I really care about for the Playstation 3 that is currently being talked about is the next Metal Gear Solid game, but I'll just beat that at a friends house. As soon as they start making exclusive system games for it, in large amounts, and that are good, I'll consider getting a PS3 and by then the price will be down. For now, the Xbox is definitely on top and looks to stay that way for a while. Lucky for me, I have one (well I did, its currently being sent back to me from the repair shop, stupid red rings  ).

Sony won't come out on top for many years, but they have stated they have a decade-long plan for this console to be out there...Frankly, I think that's about twice as long as it SHOULD be, and it's probably twice as long as it actually will be...If it really were a decade long, they'd have no choice but to come out on top, since game producers would have no choice but to use the PS3 for it's larger content-holding capabilities.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

I think the PS3 got off to a "slow" start, and $600 consoles does not help either. But I have to say I love my 360.

If the PS3 pulls ahead, good for it. If it doesn't I'll know why.

With them pulling the old ones from shelves, and supposedly making Ps3's with bigger hard drives to replace them, plus the price cut on the 60 gb..I still doubt they will sell much.

But does that sound familiar? Adding a new console with a bigger hard drive..and a price cut..sounds like what Microsoft did (or is rumored to do, with the cut) by adding the elite, eh? sounds like copying to me :notalk:

the elite was announced after the PS3 change was. In the end, I see It being a close race between the PS3 and the xbox 360. The wii is somewhat of a fad right now, but in the future it will wear off and sales will slow considerably. Even though the xbox 360 is far ahead now, as blue ray becomes the standard as time progresses and price drops make the system more reasonable, I think that sales will jump to a point where the only thing keeping the xbox 360 in compition with the PS3 will be its installed base.

I agree. The installed base argument actually works the other way also. Remember that the PS2 sold 120 million units. That's a lot of people who are familiar with the Sony brand and what it can bring to the table.

I'm no Sony fanboy myself, and I went out and bought a Wii instead of a PS3, but this is all short term. In the end I will buy a PS3 because it's the superior machine. The thing that Sony has down is that the better technology, assuming you keep spending until people realize it, will always come out on top.

Same reason the $299 PlayStation that could play CDs beat the $199 N64. And what did people say then? "Ohhhh it's too expensive no way it can win." Sound familiar?

It's the same reason the $299 PlayStation 2 that could play DVDs crushed the $199 GameCube. And what did people say then? Well, you catch my drift.

The big difference this time around is that the Wii is a staggering $350 (USD) cheaper than the top-of-the-line PS3. Oh, and it has those beloved controllers (but c'mon, peripherals are easily replicated).

Give it time, and you know when the PS3 is down to $350 you'll go out and buy one too.

EDIT: If Sony can land Square Enix exclusively, Final Fantasy XIII will save the system! :P

I'm really having a hard time believing that Sony will be able to pull this off, I mean with the PS1 it was only about $100 more than the N64 thus it was able to pull through easily, I mean $100 isn't that much more to spend when the price is that low, and the price lowered pretty steadily(Which I doubt will be possible for the PS3 seeing as they already have their prices about as low as they can go with all the crap they put in it) plus they actually had exclusive games upon its release, granted many of them weren't that good, but they were still exclusive, and it had already been out for a year before the N64.

Today with the PS3, its about $250 more than the Wii, plus it only has 1 supposedly halfway decent exlusive game to it, and doesn't seem to have many more coming out in the near future, they are already losing a ton for having their systems so low as it is due to the Blueray junk that isn't really needed in the first place, so how are we to expect that they will somehow be able to pull together enough money in the future to pull ahead just like they did with the PS1 and 2?

It could be possible I guess, but I'm eally having a hard time believing that this will turn out alright, even in the best of cases I'm sure this will leave a pretty nasty dent in things for Sony.

~^v^~Ex-Leader of the Divine Flames of Redemption~^v^~

here is my forecast.

Xbox 360 is winning.

Ps3 sales are still low.

3 or 4 years later:

the PS3 has a price cut and now many more games.

the PS3 is quite close to the 360.

the wii sales are quite low now.

8 years later:

the world makes a switch to Blue ray. PS3 sales are now higher than the 360.microsoft must make a console that can use blue ray. the wii has fallen behind.

why i think this?

sony said that they will not make another console for a long time because they are going to focus on the PS3.

If u don't like sony. i don't really like microsoft either.

like what the x-box 720

blue ray is just exspensive sony rubbish

wrong! blue ray hasn't been created by sony. its disc like DVD or CD.

the wii sales are quite low now.

you fail. In terms of sales the wii has quite frankly blitzed the other 2.

Since launch, the Wii has sold 9 million consoles..the ps3 has sold upwards 3 million. the wii has sold almost 3 times as many..and the 360 has only sold 11.7 million consoles. The Wii is selling the most right now..considering how long the 360 has been out.

I would bet on either the Wii or 360. Right now, Sony doesn't stand a chance..they need to change things. If they don't, those 94 million Ps2 owners could end up with a Wii or 360

I didn't mean low now!

You've got special packs here in Holland now. You get a PS3, 2 games of your choice and an extra controller. For ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì600,--. That's a pretty good deal already, considering a a game is ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì65,-- till ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì70,-- and a controller is ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì50,-- and those are always two things that you'll buy when you're getting a console. This makes the ps3 only ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì25,-- more expensive than a 360 with two games of choice and an extra controller. And then you've got a blue ray player, which really is a fantastic future (don't know if you ever saw a blu-ray DVD on a full HD screen, but it leaves a normal DVD very far behind) and a hard-disk that's three times as big, and there's already lots of great download games and that second life looks like an amazing feature as well. From what I've seen the things you can do online are great as well, and you don't need to pay ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì60,-- a year for it.

If I had the money for it I'd get one right away. I know I'd use it more than my Wii, which has been dis-connected most of the time since I completed Zelda. I only use it when I'm going to play it with some friends. I use my PS2 nearly every day.

It's a question of relativity. The PlayStation was 150% more expensive than the N64. The PlayStation 3 is around 140% more expensive than the XBox with the HD drive. Obviously the Wii is significant, but I think many people will not hesitate to buy both (Wii first, PS3 some years later when price drops). And, at the time, I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember, but $299 was a LOT of money.

and the price lowered pretty steadily(Which I doubt will be possible for the PS3 seeing as they already have their prices about as low as they can go with all the crap they put in it)

Somewhat true on the price issue - PlayStation dropped its price for the first time a year and a half after the initial release. PS3 still has some time . The thing you're wrong about, though, is that PS3 prices won't come down. They will, man, especially as Blu-Ray drive prices go down. But the thing you don't realize is that in gaming cycles, the cost of components continue to go down dramatically as mass production becomes possible.

plus they actually had exclusive games upon its release, granted many of them weren't that good, but they were still exclusive, and it had already been out for a year before the N64.

Good news for XBox I suppose (being out a year early)? PlayStation's launch titles that were REALLY successful were what? Ridge Racer and Twisted Metal?

Sure those two are better than PS3's launch titles, but at the same time, PS3 has the technological advantage and '08 is going to be huge for games.

They're not going to deliver as convincing a victory as did the PS1 and 2. The exclusive titles thing is troublesome - maybe the biggest question surrounding PS3's viability - but did I mention that Sony has tons and tons of cash? And they spend tons and tons of cash?

It could be possible I guess, but I'm eally having a hard time believing that this will turn out alright, even in the best of cases I'm sure this will leave a pretty nasty dent in things for Sony.

You're right. It's not going to be a smashing PS3 owns all victory. But hey, I think they'll take what they get for this generation.

It's a transition phase from video games -> home entertainment. You've gotta believe that Sony has some long-term vision in this, they're not so stupid in their business strategy (you know they have highly trained executives with absurd business acumen, right?) that any and every Tip.It forum user can point out their incompetence. :)

$300 for a PS1 compared to $200 for a N64 really isn't that much more. Though the price difference is about the same between Xbox360 and the PS3, the Xbox360 has tons of good exclusive games and had already been out for a while before the PS3 came out, thus it has the advantage.

Technological advantage is nothing if they have no good exclusive games, and at the moment the only 2 things they have going well for them at the moment is Resistance and the hope that the upcoming MGS game will be good, that isn't going get much attention, sure many MGS fans are probably planning on getting it, but that really isn't going to be enough for them to pull out from behind.

Their business strategy here seems to be losing, even if Blueray does pull ahead in the future, who the hell buys a video game system to watch movies? If their strategy revolves around the Blueray becoming big in the future then they have no chance of succeeding in this.

Let's assume we have a difference of opinion on the other points. This last one is new, so I'll address it. The inclusion of Blu-Ray is a launch pad for the future of home entertainment, which I think you also agree with.

Your contention is that nobody buys a video game system for a Blu-Ray player... But I would have to say that almost everyone outside of the core gaming market (which is what, 11-20?) DOES buy a system on those premises.

Given that the PS3 is one of, if not the cheapest Blu-Ray players out there, it's a good sell for anyone who's interested in next-gen entertainment at the very least.

DVDs took a while to catch on, too. First ones were released in what, 95? Didn't gain predominant-format status until 99-2000ish.

Anyway, Sony has a vested interest in pushing the Blu-Ray format, also: their studio is Blu-Ray exclusively.

Yes they have a lot of other subdivisions and products, but their trouble areas now are primarily televisions and gaming. I am of the opinion that they will do what it takes because they KNOW what it takes to sell a great product.

In all honesty, they should have released a PS3 standalone unit first, then done a Microsoft and added a Blu-Ray attachment later, once a) Blu-Ray players were cheaper and B) the format wars were more decided.

I believe it has a good chance. With MGS4 coming out soon that'll definitely help the PS3 as it is an exclusive, there are also a lot of FF fanboys that'll get PS3 for FFXIII and then eventually (possibly) KH3 will come out soon and a lot of ppl will get that. PS3 has many great games that r yet to come that will definitely help

Nope all the people i know wont as much as they like the games they all tend to be ones they do and dont touch again.
