Does Jagex play their game?

well, you have to think of one important thing... everyone has a different view of a good time, and what is useless to one might not be to another. they're adding content that they would enjoy playing, and they admit to it. if you worked with their content team, you'd be adding what you wanted in-game, and someone else would have the exact same thread posted here.

i'll go with an example of useful/useless to start off. many people would say the meat tenderizer of RFD is a poor weapon to use in combat, as it's basically a rune warhammer with more work involved and a different look. people use it simply because it's a fun weapon to have and looks cool. people use the satchels for looks as well, how many people who wear them do you think actually have a sandwich in there?

I understand that people may still want items like the satchel for looks. But the update really seems like a waste when it could've had a practical use put on it.

I'm not demanding that Jagex cater to the player at every corner. I'm simply asking them to consider things like usefullness when they think up an update.

  • 2 months later...

I read somewhere on rs website that J-mods play, but on personal accounts, not their j-mod accounts.

So yes they do play their own games

dunno about andrew though.. would be cool if he played his own game!

You couldnt be any more right with the concept of this thread. They say they play, but I hardly believe they have any truly high level characters, if anyone on content team did then we wouldnt be getting updates like we do.

Areas that are never used again after quests, items that would be great if....(insert lame reason here. example a satchel that would hold any food instead of just a freakin sandwich)

Yes, I completely agree with this.

I believe they play it but have a different mind set about it. I don't think they play it on the normal servers very much, they play it on their testing servers. On those servers they can do anything and have anything, so they spend their playing time testing stuff out to see if its fun to do, not trying to train skills and make money so that they can do stuff.

They play on the normal servers and they do have high lvl chars.

Hmm...how about asking Jagex Mods or Andrew yourself?

I would say they do, but not exactly very thoroughly. One of the old news reports on the Runescape website has Andrew recounting his visit through the middle of Ardougne on his lvl 3 members account, which actually got him rather *cabbage* off as he nearly drowned "in a sea of 'noob's and 'lol's".

Their randoms are also just deterrents to autoers, and it is not wise at all for us to call them detrimental to overall xp gain rates. They do not disturb me as often as some people say they do. We cannot judge on how much the Mods play on their personal accounts just by looking at the updates or the randoms.

Andrew and Paul do play RS. However when they play, they see things differently from us. Maybe someone looked at a girl char and thought "oh she needs a handbag, women love handbags."

I think one time Andrew saw people chatting and decided it was a bad thing...since they weren't roleplaying. Otherwise, there is no way to explain the old 'chat filter' update where Andrew made it so that you could only use a limited dictionary of words (like in Club Penguin). For example if you typed in "Meili" it would appear as "milk" since milk is an in-game item that is in the chat dictionary and "Meili" is not.

Obviously allot of Jmods don't play..... but a fairly large section of the team play on a regular basis.

I can name several Jmods who's player account I know the names of who are in the top 100k.... one even in the top 30k players (and thats just the mods I know....)

the satchel's where more of a test item than anything else.... they used it to test a new code system they had made which is now used on the dragon fire shield, so I would not hold too much against that (although they are useless)

I know the bigwigs play although possibly not the new CEO as he does not strike me as a gamer....

Hi mEb,

I don't know as many JMods who play as Bobbington does, but I do know a few who play the game on their own personal accounts like any other player.

Obviously we can't tell you who they are since that'd be violating their privacy, but rest assured there are definitely staff at Jagex who are avid gamers, and keen players of RuneScape. Obviously none of Jagex staff on while they're on their player accounts can tell you they work for Jagex, since they can't do that for obvious reasons (it being against Jagex policy).

This means it's possible you have a player on your friends list, who you chat to everyday could work for Jagex, but it's impossible for them to tell you.

This means too that they do get regularly bothered by Randoms like any other player. As well I've seen Jagex Moderator accounts often abducted by Randoms so they're not immune in anyway from these events.

So if you don't like Randoms, feel free to give your feedback to Jagex upon how you feel they could be improved as a feature of the game. For many reasons too numerous to name here I doubt they'll ever be removed from the game.

While I do feel that Randoms while High Alching have become very common, maybe that has a good-side effect by slowing down the amount of G.P. being feed into the RuneScape economy. I don't know if that's at all relevant to their current frequency in the game though.

I've also heard players saying Randoms like the Genie, and the Classroom are actually good randoms due to the X.P. bonuses they give. Maybe it might help Jagex more if we can suggest ways to improve the value of a Random event to us, if they aren't going to remove or decrease the frequency of them.

Regards,

Fey.

I'm a game designer. Not on the scale of Jagex Ltd., I work for a smaller company.

When I make a game, you'd better believe I play it. If I didn't, there might be huge problems I wouldn't even have had a chance to fix. If Jagex didn't play their own game, the entire game'd be a wreck.

You also have to remember every person who works for Jagex works for a computer games company..... the entire development team chose to take a degree in computer game design (or something similar) That means the chances are they all have a real passion for gaming. Even if they don't play RuneScape (although most do) they almost defiantly play other MMORPGs and so will gain huge experience for he view of the customer from there.
