New Achievement Diaries - Smithing

Well with the release of the Diaries I thought I would try them out as i failed horribly at the Kamjara ones, and after receiving the level 1 reward I decided to try out the edge vile furnace. I'm smelting iron with rings of forging and was surprised to find out that when you smelt 2 bars at once it only uses 1 charge on your ring. Now many people still believe that Port Phsymas (sp, ghost place) or this Neiznot place (I have no knowledge on this place) are better because of a door you have to open every time. This is irrelevant, my whole point was to see if anyone though saving a charge on your ring is worth the extra time (if there is any).

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT: I stated below that you may not get the bonus with a full inventory and I was wrong just got it.

 

 

 

Also the times were on average:

 

 

 

1:46 Consistently at the Port

 

and

 

1:45 With 1 Double smelt in Edge, without at double smelt it was 1:51.

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT 2: Just had a double double smelt (wow thats a mouth full) and the time was 1:40.

 

 

 

Also a contributing factor with edge vile is that if someone else is using the door you can't and you have to wait, so to optimize performance you need to be the only one in the world using it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT 3: IT is posible to get multiple Double smelts in and inventory, after 30 runs the best I have had is 5 in one inventory.

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT 4: I just realized that with the RoF and iron, the difference in the amount of loads adds additional time to the smelting process, so after a few timed runs of running to the bank and back I can guess that its approximate 16 seconds from the furnace to the bank, with each double smelt you *gain* 4 seconds, so you would need 4 Double smelts in one ring to make up the time loss and make it faster then the port.

wow, that is incredibly... stupid, tbh. The way ROF work (imo) is that you can get 5 full inventories with 1ring. When you finish an inventory, and bank, you can get a new ROF, if you need to.

To both of you, its not that you get 2 bars from one ore, you smelt to ores at once. I've also tried doing some timed runs and it appears that the Port is about 5 seconds faster per load, and I would like to do a few more tests before I'm positive but with Iron or Silver the only 2 ores that you can fill your inventory with and not have any space left at the end, it seems as though you don't get the 2 smithing at once if you don't have a space open.

So... its REALLY only usefull for gold ore smelting, since smelting adamant with 4 per invent doesnt really help much, does it?

I think that the odds of getting the double smith on 4 items per inventory is exponentially low and not worth the added time.

Is it truly necessary that you have to smith within the area the diary says? Kinda stupid if you can't get the bonus elsewhere.

Lol, well I took it off when I went to PP, so I don't know, it was just extra weight so I didn't want to wear it.

For being "extra weight" its actually one of if not the Best Defence stats to wieght ratio in the game. :wink:

I wouldn't recommend it for iron, because you mess up the 5-inventory-per-RoF sceme. I think for smelting steel bars it is great.

Well, it sounds like a good update then :) Im going to try it myself when i got another 9 lvls of smithing and 2 farming lvls then i can do the hard part..

It does mess up the 140-ore scheme for RoF, but at the same time, it gets you some extra use out of your RoF -- I ended up smelting around 155-160 irons ores before the ring melted. I also find it helpful to "Operate" the ring when running back to Edge bank, and I keep the rings in the bank right next to the ores. If my "ores remaining" is low, I grab 1 ring and 27 ores, then when I stop smelting when the ring melts I just put on the new one and start up.
