Hey all,

Well I'm a bit worried as I really do not have any confidence in like talking to a big group of people, this is bad as I have chosen leadership for P.E which requires you go to other schools and take a P.E lesson with people you have never met. Any advice wuld be greatly appretiated!

When I do public speaking I create a persona who is very much like myself but more confident, then act as that persona. Then I'm like "they aren't judging me, they are judging the persona I made, and that ain't as personal".

Confidence, eh? Honestly just be yourself. If you are scared that they don't like you, who cares, like you are going to know them 5 years later. Personally I just put on a mentality of just wanting to have fun, everybody (ok most) like to have fun.

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

Look people in the eyes as you are delivering your speech. This will keep their attention and I find it helps me stay on the right track.

Also look good on the day. Dress like you are a somebody and you'll feel more comfortable having everyones eyes on you.

Outside of the classroom, talk with new people and get to know them. That way, you will be more calm and relaxed in front of people you don't know. Five years ago I could barely speak in front of crowds. Now, I am a teacher.

It's like diving into the deep end, just go for it.

Look people in the eyes

I find it's best if you do this at all times. People will show you more respect. If you look at their mouth or down they can see you're uncomfortable and the conversation won't seem as personal. I always look people in the eye when I talk to them or visa verca and people show me a lot more respect than they used to.

I don't really know how to build someone's confidence other than being around people who will compliment you on your strengths. Over the summer I spend my time with a group of friends who were always shooting me down, but then I ended up hanging out with my neighbor who is always telling me I look good, she likes the cologne I wear, how the things I do are cute.. Stuff like that built my confidence way up. Just be sure you don't hang around negative people I suppose.

I disagree. Not everybody is born with confidence. I was born shy, but I've since drastically changed my image and now I'm seen as outgoing and confident.

In Western culture, confidence is extremely important, especially in schools. From personal experience, my life has become so much better since I've built up my confidence. Not only have I met new (and nicer) friends, but I'm getting more jobs, I'm participating more in school and I'm now confident in organizing major events and parties.

My advice...

Start going to house parties on the weekend. It's a great way to practice your social skills and meet new people. If it's a high school party, there will probably be alcohol. Drink if you want -- it will help boost your confidence. (be responsible, though)

Any sort of socializing works, though. Jobs, traveling with kids your age, etc. :)

Don't slouch, keep upright posture, and as stated, look into people's eyes. You'll have a much greater aura of self-confidence around you just from the way you walk, so if you tend to look down when you walk, or do not have any swagger in your gait at all, work on your posture and get a little swagger in yur step :P .

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

Before anything where confidence could be a problem, dance. Alone (in your room or something) and personally I like to do such things naked (though I never have confidence problems). Underwear could work too, but you just have to dance and let loose every doubt you have of yourself (hence the nudity) and then go to whatever activity and conquer.

agreed, unless there that unconspicous shrub you've owned for the past few years. try create an alternate personallity simular to yours but has different perspectives of things. or wear a brown paper bag over your head (advised to have eye holes).

The best way to gain confidence in public speaking is to just put yourself in a situation to talk in public as much as possible. For me it is merely a matter of fear that leads to my nervousness and to overcome fears we have to confront them until we beat them.

Usually if I think about it a lot before I talk it makes me more nervous. Usually once I get to talking I get over it pretty fast and then I'm fine.

The last public speech I gave was in front of about 25 engineers at a major NASA instillation. I had only graduated college about six months before the speech and a lot of these guys had been engineers for 20 or more years already. That was a little intimidating.

The main thing to remember is you prepare yourself before a speech so that you can provide information that the people you are talking to don't know. Another thing that helps me is to think that I wouldn't be bothered talking to anyone in the audience 1 on 1 or even 5 at once so talking to 30 at once isn't really any different and the nervousness is more just all in my head.
