Let's ask a blunt question for once to the tip.it crew - do you think modern horror is, on the whole, crap?

 

 

 

It's occured to me in recent years that to be honest, it is. All I find in new horror is unbelievable amounts of tension being built up to something quite commonplace in horror movies. You leave the cinema, but what's to be scared of after? Nothing.

 

 

 

The first exception, I found, was Silent Hill - a game remake yes, but great for the fact that noone dies until near the end, and when scary stuff is happening, it's all happening right in front of your face. The tension is built when it needs to be, not excessively (for example, the corridor scene near the end.) Then there's 28 days later, a great cult movie and scary as hell because it leaves you feeling like gee...what if it did happen?

 

 

 

Do you find that the newer horror movies tend to try too hard or am I the only one?

I think I'm in the minority here, but I don't have any problem with recent horror flicks. I think some people like to pick certain bad ones as examples and say they all suck, but there are lot and lots of REALLY bad older ones. I think it really comes down to what you want out of a horror...some like suspense, some like gore, some like disturbingly weird, some like supernatural, some like horror based in reality, some like completely made-up stuff. Personally, I'm a fan of all and can therefore judge a film for what it is, rather than what I wanted it to be.

You're right that modern horror for the most part, is pretty awful.

 

 

 

I can tell from the trailer if it's gonna suck or not... the crap ones usually rely on a loud noise to make you jump. Really lame.

* Exorcism of Emily Rose ( I wanted horror, not a courtroom drama!)

Yes, they try much too hard to scare you. I also enjoyed Silent Hill.

 

 

 

In my case, for horror movies, less is more. Simple use of imagery, not gore and high tech effects, can scare the hell out of me a lot more.

I have only liked a select few horror movies as many have been far too predictable. That applies to both new AND old.

That's because it's neither of those categories, either. It's a Shyamalan movie therefore it's more or less, unique. 'The Village' focuses more about how people react to the 'scary' events than the scary events in themselves. Let me just say that whoever didn't like this movie didn't understand it and/or went to see it with different expectations (for instance, that it would be a horror movie). But seeing the rest of his movies makes you expect no less and no more than what it is.

Hollywood Horror is crap. But there's plenty of modern British horror films which are really great. 28 Weeks Later is a recent example, even tho it did have a few too many Hollywood cliches.

That's funny, cuz as much as I love the 28 Days/Weeks Later movies, I don't really think of them as horrors....more of sci-fi/action/thriller. They don't scare me in the least, but that's probably cuz of the zombie theme (easily dismissed as not real in my mind, therefore don't scare me)

No one can answer the question, because all the recent horror movies are not in the genre horror. They do not make you scared. Instead, they try to surprise you with loud noises or sudden actions, or to disgust you with a hell of a lot of violence which isnt scary, it juts makes you squemish. Last true horror movie is "the Shining". Face it, the horror genre is extinct.

1408 was a really good horror movie in my opinion. It really gave me goosbumps, and I was glad when it ended because I thought I was losing it. brr.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It has way more to do with age than anything else. I think that movies are fine, you're just getting older. Of course things aren't going to be as scary (if at all scary) now as opposed to when you were a kid.

all horror these days are nothing compared to the oldies alien, shining, SOTL etc. Since Scream reinvented the genre it has gone downhill.
