Okay. Today in English, we were talking about communities. Everyone started throwing out ideas. Some of the virtual ones were:

 

 

 

WOW (World of Warcraft)

 

My Space

 

FaceBook

 

AIM

 

MSN

 

Etc.

 

 

 

So, my teacher began talking and so much more. Okay, so what it finally came down to was 5 students get to write about 5 fabulous virtual communities. I was picked and I got... RUNESCAPE.

 

 

 

So, what I need is help from you guys. I need people to post what they think of RuneScape as a community and how it IS a community. Explain why and maybe put in your own input.

 

 

 

For my project, I'll need to log on during class and show everyone my account and then provide screenshots, so if anyone has any screenshots they'd like to hand over to me, that'd be great.

 

 

 

Pictures

 

So, picture wise. If you have any pictures showing RuneScape as a community (I.E. Mass quantities of people, exploring through dangerous terrain or looking at a waterfall, hanging with friends, slaying monsters with friends or other people, etc.). I need a bunch of pictures because I will be presenting a slideshow and ACTUALLY logging on and showing everyone my account and RuneScape itself.

well the community is alright in members but if u want a mass amount of people why dont u take a picture of lumby f2p or fally garden p2p?

And if you're getting opinions from us, then you're going to need to cite us in your paper. Which would in turn require you to know our names at the very least, I reckon. Buut.. meh. Maybe you could do a "live slideshow". Prepare everything beforehand and get some buddies to agree to be online at the same time as you are. Plan out a route to hit the high spots of RS. Go to KQ, KBD, Wilderness, Duel Arena, CW, etc. Then go do some skills with your friends. Also, to be realistic, log in to a F2P world at Lumbridge to show the "lower class" so-to-speak.

That sounds pretty cool. I would definitely add some tip.it event pictures and some kah-bah-gee pictures (if they're still around). Maybe show the mass market in world 1+2 along with some places like world 16 air run and the law run world. Possibly also the pest control games to show people working together for a common goal?

It's amazing that you actually get to do a report about RuneScape as a community. Actually logging on, wow. I can get an in-school suspension for just visiting the site :D

 

 

 

But can you provide a bit more detail on what the assignment is? If it is actually written down on paper it's be great if you could copy and paste it over.

 

 

 

And don't mention Tip.it, you don't want you're English teacher to see this thread :ohnoes: (unless he or she allow it of course). And turn private chat off the day before the assignment is due. The last thing you want are your friends revealing something about you in front of the class.

 

 

 

I think RuneScape is much like the real world community, but then again it is real people we are dealing with (most of them anyway, stupid Macros) there are the beggers, the vain, the outgoing, the jerks, and the people who really are friendly. If you walk around RuneScape, chances are you won't attract a crowd (assuming you are no one famous), in RL, if you walk around in say, NYC, you won't go attracting a crowd either. (Again, the exception is someone famous, see the connection?) Chances are, the person that you bumped into on the street asking for directions isn't going to become your best friend, same in runescape.

 

 

 

But the people you do develop a close relation with, you talk with them, you do things together, and sometimes, you can start to wither away from each other and cease to be friends. And then there are those times when an old friend of yours suddenly pops in. The virtual community is very much like real life.

There's no 'written' guidelines. Basically, all you just said was perfect for my project, so you nailed it.

 

 

 

I'll make sure to turn off my private chat and maybe general chat too. I don't want someone cussing and my class seeing it. I am so happy to do a report on RS because it's something I actually know and i have a good feeling I'll do good on it.

 

 

 

For the whole 'citation' thing, these are just opinions that I am going to cram together and maybe even ask a couple people if I can quote them (Which then I'll just need your RS name). Thanks again everyone!

I am only asking other people's opinions to compare what I think to what they think. I don't generally like just writing about what I think because it can be totally opposite of what others think.

 

 

 

What I am simply doing is seeing how other people see RuneScape as a community. Maybe someone could mention something I could completely not even think about.

 

 

 

BTW, thank you guys for the pictures. They're so great. Keep everything coming. You have til Friday before I finalize everything. I especially like the pictures with all the people, CW's, KQ, friends, and everything. They are so good.

runescape parallels the "real" world in many ways. I'd talk a lot about the player managed economy, merchants, etc, and draw comparisons between that and american history, your teacher would probably love that, and it's interesting.

 

 

 

oh, and make sure your screenshots show a variety of settings, such as the desert, jungle, snow areas, etc. runescape has far from a bland geography!

Oh, and mention some of the clans perhaps. Ie the TSG, which I'm in. It's the slayer's guild, led by axe man jack. It's a great community of players and we talk all the time on our runescape clan chat channel.

As far as the community as a whole is concerned, I'd say that it's mostly younger players (12-16), but many of the mature and experienced players can be found if you train any skill to a high level. For instance, in the TSG we have a lot of players who are older than the average runescape player. Many of us are also all dedicated to the goal of eventually getting 99 slayer. On our clan chat channel we talk about slayer all the time (best way to kill a certain monster, about slayer news and updates, about which weapons to use for what, info about certain monsters), and lately we've been organizing god wars dungeon trips. We're always able to get a group of 110+'s to go since nearly everyone in the TSG is higher level. They've also got a lot of common sense and can do the GWD very well.

 

 

 

That's just my 2 cents. I hope it helps a little.

I like the 99 prayer. Bunches of people around. Support from people across the world who probably most of them you don't know irl. This is good.
