If you do play an instrument then please don't comment

I play the Alto Saxophone. I just recently got into playing some popular songs. So I was wonder.....What cool songs can you play and on what instrument? Here are my songs.

I play Alto Sax. I can play all the songs from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. (Serenade of Water, Borolo of Fire, Epona's Song, Sun Song, Song of Time, Song of Storms, Saria's Song, Minuet of Forest, Nocturne of Shadow and many more) I can also play Many Mario songs.

So...how about you?

I play alto sax (hey, just like you! lol cool) and a little bit of the drums. My friend plays the baritone sax and he can play Layla by Eric Clapton on it, but he plays it all the time. :o

One of the pieces we're playing in band is a Duke Ellington medley. It's pretty cool.

Er, don't you mean "if you don't play an instrument please don't comment"?

I play electric and bass guitar. My equipment's nothing special (I need a better amp) but I'm able to play the bass on Love You to Death by Type O Negative, Hysteria by Muse, and on guitar, the solo from Ruiner by Nine Inch Nails, Killing in the Name Of (but who can't play that?), and Cosmonaut by At the Drive-In.

I'm going to assume you mean "if you don't play instruments, don't comment".

I play violin and guitar. I've been playing violion for about 10 years. I don't play any novelty songs at the moment, just classical. But, I just won a competition with it the other day, got about $3500 worth of stuff (:D), and part of that was $250 gift voucher for a music store. So I'm gonna buy a cheap electric violin and put it through one of my pedals. Should be cool. :)

I've been playing guitar maybe 4 years? I mostly just muck around on it, don't learn too many songs.

Cool.

I bought me an acoustic guitar 7 months ago. Now I can almost play some Final Fantasy songs. Pracising At Zanarkand

and Breezy

Reality is hundreds of times more beautiful and more interesting than delusions. Fairy tales just tend to be easier to follow than the wonderful intricacies of life.

Guitar: Epiphone Les Paul, as well as an Alexis Jumbo acoustic. My amps just a Roland 30W Cube COSM, with various in built effects which are okayish. I fancy getting a Digitech XP-100 Whammy-Wah at some point.

I play a bit of all sorts really, a fair bit of White Stripes on the electric as well as some Pink Floyd. On the acoustic it's more sing-a-long type stuff, Oasis, Kooks etc.

But really i'll just play whatever I can learn and sounds good.

I play guitar. I've got an Ibanez SZ320 electric guitar (with a Seymor Duncan Dimebucker bridge pickup and a Duncan/Ibanez neck pickup) and a Yamaha acoustic, with a Line 6 Spider II 30w amp. Also a Korg Toneworks AX1500G multi-effect pedal, a Crybaby Wah-pedal and a Digitech Metalmaster distortion pedal.

On my electric guitar I play everything from classic rock (Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher...) to the heavier sort of metal (Pantera, Saxon, Judas Priest...). And on the acoustic one I tend to play a lot of rock ballads, sing-a-long stuff and classical music.

Line 6 Spider II FTW. 150W for me. :P

But no pedal as of yet. :(

I thought this would be a good place to ask my question and my question is thus:

I'm torn between learning to play the guitar or the violin, just recreationally and socially. If anyone has any experience, could anyone tell me which is, generally (I know it's different for people), is easier to play?

Also, if you could recommend some good starter instruments, that would be great :)

I've never tried to learn violin but due to it being fretless (you have to pick the note out exactly on the neck of the violin) I imagine its pretty hard to learn. You can pick up a guitar, learn a few chords and play a song in the space of one lesson. From what I know of violins (one of my best mates has been playing 6 years), it's not like that. You'd need a proper teacher I think to learn violin, it's definately not a pick up and play thing.

Anyway, I play electric guitar (tiny bit of acoustic). I'm playing a Yamaha Pacifica at the moment but hopefully getting a Schecter Tempest Custom by the end of this week. I'm playing through a Spider III 150 and I love it.

Me and my band have got our first gig at the end of this week (reason for getting new guitar but I'm worried it wont be delivered by then), just playing covers and one song of our own where I get a scorching solo :D

It should be a matter of taste, rather then one of difficulty. Considering you like to sing, guitar seems to be the more obvious choice.

I don't know about violins, but i definitely recommend NOT to buy a starter guitar. Invest ~300 bucks to get yourself something you likely won't outgrow for a very long time. Btw.. do we talk accoustic or e-guitar here?

Also i believe that it doesn't really matter on what material you start, unless you were to play on a concert guitar or something like that. Just try to find an instrument that speaks to you and is affordable.

For guitars the strings are very important when it comes to how difficult it is to play. They can (and have to be) changed anyway after a while. So just ask in the store for a decent instrument and starter strings.

...and in case you are going to learn guitar and would be using a pick, use a fairly hard one, one that doesn't bend easily (1mm or thicker).

I advise doing the opposite. Buy a starter kit or something in the beginning, they're usually pretty cheap. I don't see a point in shelling out ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã300 on something that you might not like doing.

I've had very little experience with both, but eh, my two cents.

We had guitar lessons at school for a while. Within 1 week, I knew how to play a few songs.

I had violin lessons for a very short while. Never got to learn a song.

In my opinion, guitar is easier. I guess it differs from person to person though. Perhaps go rent each for a while, and see which you like better?

As for instruments I play...I've played piano for a pretty long time. I forget how long. Nearly 10 years, I think. I play classical. Nothing else. So yeah...Song titles? Sonata No.7 Opus 13, Waltz No.8, or something like that. As for something you may have heard of, Turkish March was probably my favorite piece of all time.

I also play trumpet in the school band. Not much to say there. I play what the conductor tells me to.

(Also played Chinese Dulcimer for a while. I played a bunch of Chinese songs I don't know the names to.)

I use a Semi-Acoustic Morgan guitar, I play for 7 years now.

I play alot of RHCP stuff (And ofcourse the songs my teacher gives me to practice), and I like to improvise and going my own way.

I think I will by a bass guitar too, I want to try something new after practicing the same over and over again.

The only reason why I ask for the 'difficulty' opinions is because I'm not going to be able to give learning it all of my time. I'm committed to learning something, but I have university to think of and what have you.

The guitar seems the logical one :)

I play both, and guitar is easier, no doubt. It's a lot easier to find practice time for guitar, even if you get a silent violin or a practice mute. Because, you can pick up a guitar and play pretty much any time, even at someone else's house (pretty much every house has a guitar), whereas you're a lot more restricted with a violin. Guitars are also cheaper than violins, not to mention the cost of music.

So, considering you're at uni, and I'd assume money and time are both issues, go for the guitar. If you do decide to go for violin though, as Ragen said, it's not a pick up and play instrument. You'll need to get proper lessons.

Regardless of which instrument you choose, start cheap. If guitar, just buy a $300 starter set. If you go for violin, you could pretty easily get a relatively crap violin for $300, but it will do the job.

Cool.
