First if smoking so so bad they want to ban in it in public places why do they sell it to us? we are allwed to buy it and the goverment banks on it.

Second since when does goverment tell buinsess what to do? forcing them to ban smoking from there own buisness how about forcing corporation to stop going over sea's taking american jobs? But no we will force them to not allow them to smoke causing smaller buisness to lose buisness.

this prevents passive smoking, ie. dumb [wagon] smokers killing other people who don't choose to slowly commit suicide. also, the government ALWAYS tells businesses what to do, they're the government and they make the laws. although america is more or less a free economy it is impossible to have a completely free economy as basically, the businesses would completely and utterly screw over the consumers. besides which, tobacco companies aren't exaclty small businesses.

The government takes into account the factors which you, as a selfish human being, do not.

- When you blow smoke all over someone, they probably would rather you weren't. If that same someone came up to you and coughed in your face, you probably wouldn't be very happy either.

- When you get lung cancer and need an expensive operation, it costs all the non-smokers money (assuming you live in a country with a national health service). In America, they'd do the same thing, but instead they'd have a little question on your health insurance which says "smoker Y/N", and if you answered "Y", then they'd up your premium.

Therefore, the government imposes restrictions and taxes which take into account the harm you do, but don't care about.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

The time when the living and the dead exist as one.

Goverment needs money and where do they get it? That's right, taxes.

Everytime you buy a box of cigs, goverment gets some $$$. They've counted that cigs can make pretty good profit. If it doesn't, they'll just rise the taxes. People will smoke, price doesn't slow them down.

I was wondering that if cigs came out now, they would *never* be allowed to be sold. Now the goverment tries to get as much profit from it as possible. They can't just ban it as there are too many people hooked to nicotine/smoking itself. That would just cause major protests against goverment. Also blackmarked would be running. Just like in Finland when alcohol was banned (released 1923 if I remember right); People bought illegal alcohol, paid A LOT to dealers and such. No1 really cared about it as it had been legal some years ago. With smoking it would be the same thing.

Personally I don't mind about smoking as long as you keep it as a private thing. I sometimes smoke when I'm drunk (~1-2 cigs in 2 months or so), but I couldn't think smoking nonstop. I don't see a reason why; not worth ruining your health (might look as an unimportant thing to a youngster), putting 15-20e/week for cigs (I sure have better use for those), I hate the smell of it when it's in your clothes and it doesn't even feel that great. I've used to use a nicotine product (snus, the thing you put under your lip) which gave more nicotine than cigs. Yes, I was somehow hooked. Yet cigs didn't really give me a good feeling.

Ahahahaha! Ahahaha!

...

Ahahaha! Oh that's priceless! You're ignorance astounds me!

You try banning something that brings in millions everyday.

Read up on your prohibition laws on alcohol. I guarantee if something liek cigarettes or alcohol were invented in today's age, there's no chance in hell would they be legalised.

Smokers should all just be lit on fire on the spot if they're caught smoking anywhere but inside their house. I'm not kidding.

I do not smoke, nor will I ever. Why? Because I like being able to breathe without coughing. I like not having cancer. I like not smelling/tasting/looking like complete and utter fecal matter.

The next time I'm in a public place, and a smoker blows smoke IN MY FACE *deliberately* after I ask them NOT to, I will give them a tracheotomy with my bare hands.

I can't go anywhere without some loser blowing smoke directly at me, and when I ask them "Hey, could you not blow that my way, please?" rather than saying "Sorry, sure thing." they look at you as if to say "I'll do what I want!" and then blow it at you deliberately. I cannot count how many times this has happened to me.

You all are morons, go kill yourself somewhere else. Preferably the Sun, then you'll know the true meaning of "Liting one up".

Die. Just die. I hate you all.

Personally IÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâôd rather get kicked in the groin then breathing smoke.

A recent study shows that 92% of all teenagers have small purple pet elephants named Jack. Put this in your sig if you are one of the 8% who like to do the fandango on Wednesday afternoons

Ok I will personally make sure that you get free cigs for the rest of your life if you can give me ONE good reason to smoke for yourself, not generates tax's though I doubt you knew that. Go on one reason to smoke.

Cigarettes are a cheap, legal, addicting drug.

1) It's cheap to produce them. They're mostly produced in tobacco plantages in 3rd world countries and they get paid like $100 for every ton of cigarette they produce (price per ton equals to about 5-6 boxes of cigarette when they're sold so the company makes pretty much 50,000% profit or so, can't be bothered to calculate accurately). These farmers in 3rd world countries are being robbed majestically.

2) As said before, it creates taxes AND kills off people before the government needs to pay these people pension. Every year at least 400,000 people in the U.S die because of cigarette caused diseases or misfunctions. That's 400,000 people less for the government to feed when they're 60+. Did you think the government is good hearted or what? They're a business.

3)It's the only drug the government can legally allow selling without having activists on their tails. Yeah, they ban marijuana etc. that have just about the same risks, if you consume one of these drugs then you're a "narcotic". If you consume cigarettes which is a lethal drug when consumed often, you're normal.

4)Smoking sucks, and drugs suck. Quit using them while you're still alive, there are other ways to calm down. Drink a milkshake. :)

I agree that cigarettes are bad, but milkshakes can be just as bad. I would say eating food is the worst thing for my body I can do. For the past month I have been better about not eating junk food and exercising, but I think ill be more at risk for being overweight then other things.

I've watched a man die of emphyzema and a woman die of lung cancer. That is not the way you want to go. And should you decide that you would like to die early from the effects of that nasty stuff you do not have the right to inflict upon me or my family.

Awesome, you are right about milkshakes and junkfood. It can be just as bad, but at least if you indulge in eating too much junk you are only hurting yourself and the people who will miss you when you die prematurely.

I've seen documents about people who have really ruined their lives with junk food and others like that. Majority of the smokers don't die to lung cancer, that's a fact. Those movies are propaganda which try to scare kids not to smoke.

Personally (Like I said earlier) I am against smoking, but you shouldn't believe everything you read.

I eat plenty of junk food, and have a blood pressure of 115/80, and a 72 heart beat. I also work out regularly, and run an average of two miles every night. Junk food aint gonna kill me any time soon.

Now, if I were to start smoking...nothing I do can counter that. That's the difference.

read? like i said, Ive seen it first hand. two smoking induced early deaths in my small family. And you could raise the number to 3+ if you would count inlaw's inlaws. Maybe not everyone dies early who smokes but the risk is substantially higher. real life experiences like that and numbers dont lie.

Woohoo! The age old smoking debate. Time for me to throw my (usually unwanted) ore in.

First off, I'm not entirely sure what the first poster was saying. I think it was an anti-governments-smoking policy post. Oh well, that's what I'm gonna react to it as being, so thats what it is, ok?

Here in England, for every ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã5 someone spends on smoke, ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã4.50 of that goes to the government in taxes (roughly, can't be bothered to work out exact figures). Which is why our government isn't worried about the damage that 'direct' smoking (actually smoking yourself) is doing to the NHS (National Health Service), as the smokers pretty much pay for it by themselves. They are worried about the cost of passive smoking, which could eventually cost a lot more than what it does now. As the 'ancient' adage goes - "Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool!" Which is why the government wants to ban it in public places.

As for the companies, I'm not sure how the CEOs sleep at night. Anyone who can earn money because of the suffering of millions of people and yet still believe they have a clean conscience has got be some sort of demon, because I lie awake when I see an oxfam advert. Yesterday I was at a make poverty history conference that the Labour Party put on, and it troubled my conscience as much as Comic Relief does! That was a joke about the CEOs, just incase you start flaming me.

And to the person who said that smoking makes you cool and fits in with the crowd - you're an idiot. I have several friends who claim 'I'm a social smoker', and yet, when we're all at a party or having fun inside, they say 'I'm just nipping out for a [bleep].' How social is that?

Oh, and Bubsa (I think it was you), I agree with what you said about the blowing smoke in the face thing. Some bloke in a pub did that to me once, after I specifially asked him not to. I'll called him an arrogant [bleep] who's penis was smaller than a toothbrush, who had some kind of inferiority complex about poisoning strangers. He got angry, and was promptly thrown out and arrested for violent behaviour. That's the key with drunk people or chavs, call them names that they don't understand, and then have them arrested for threatening behaviour.

Goals to get my skills back up to a barely respectable level on the high scores:

I'm all for people enjoying life, no matter what that may be. If someone enjoys smoking, then that's just fine with me. If its doing it at a party they enjoy, then so be it. But I think it should be regulated though. Do it at home or in designated places (like a bar).

What I don't like about smoking is seeing what it does to people. They start as teenagers, getting drunk at a few too many parties, smoking when they are drunk. They eventually get addicted, then stick with it for a while until they want to quit, when they can't. That's the worse, seeing people who just can't quit. You see them all the time, middle aged women (it's more noticable in women then men) who have deep, raspy voices. Their skin is loose and discolored, and they just look bad. Most times they'll smoke themselves to death.

Then there's the cancer thing, which is debatable. Some people are more susceptible than others to cancer. My dad had a friend who smoked three packs a day of unfiltered cigarettes for 40 years. The irony is that she died of colon cancer or something, not lung cancer. Other times people get cancer in their mid-50s after smoking for 40 years. It's obvious that health effects aren't a deciding factor to smokers when they choose to do something. It's bad judgment.

Living in Nevada, where smoking is legalised all over, they'll never ban it. Since casinos are too big of a contribution to the income, and smokers are free to smoke in casinos, if they banned it in casinos a huge chunk of business would be gone.

I think it's a bit forward to suggest that all smokers who don't smoke at home die on the spot. As I said, I'm all for people enjoying life. If that's what it takes for them to enjoy their lives, I'm not going to interject.

my uncle had been smoking all his life. right now he goes through over a pack a day and could hardly breath. he goes once a month to an herbist to have medicine patches glued on his back to help with his breathing. he wants to quit now but its way too hard. eventually he might die of a slow suffocation.

so think about that before you take up smoking...
