Fire is best at the beginning. It's the least weak to opening pokemon, and it has the least good subsitiutes. If you look at the best fire types, they're all either starters, legendary, rare, or not available in the beginning. However, all the grass and water types aren't too fantastic and they all have good substitutes. The only two that are any good are Empoleon (which Kingdra beats in the role of attacker and there are better steels for the role of defender) and Swampert (and there are better tanks out there, like Blissey, Skarmory, or Bronzong). Feraligatr isn't really that great, especcailly since Gyarados, which is practically guaranteed in GSC/HGSS, beats it in all types of physical attacker, and almost every other water type beats it as a special attack (for example Starmie). Grass is just way too weak for its own good. The only real use is support, and none of the starter grass types are very good at it.

The people I play against are "Hell yeah! Fire, Fighting, Dragon, and Legendaries!" There really isn't a need to go deeper than Pokemon type and move types for me.

I use Shoddy for competitive play.

Water and Normal, tbh, are my favorite types, because of their excellent neutral coverage. It's just that Fire is obviously the best type in the beginning of the game, and the fire starters are always superior to the water/grass starters (hell, Infernape has STAB super-effective attacks on Torterra AND Empoleon wtf?), that's what I was getting at.

It's been so long since I've played silver and gold, but if I remember right, you can get an growlithe (?) between the plant gym and the psychic gym, Goldenrod city right? Forgot the psychic city, but you can get one north of Sudowoodo, so that can be a good replacement for the fire starter if you can manage to get there.

Never forget. ~creeper face w/single tear~

DO YOU HEAR THE VOICES TOO?!?!

Growlith is ok, but it isn't fantastic due to the rarity of the elemental evolving stones. You'll likely be without Arcanine for a while.

Anyone know what starter they'll choose for the new games. I'm choosing cyndaquil because in my Crystal verison first run that was my starter *mutters about not having a guide or knowing where the hidden thing in cerulean gym is, and loss of lv 100 Granbull*

I'll take Totodile my first time through. I might get both, though, so I'll take Cyndaquil on the second one (if I do get both). Totodile never let me down in the old games (which I played through about a dozen times each).

I don't use starter Pokemon anyway, get rid of them before the first gym. Just as an extra challenge.

SS/HG out soon? Awesome.

They're usually fairly strong though, but I can see how that makes it more challenging :D

Pikachu is always the best :P

Damn Americans! I have to wait until the end of March to get my copy of HG, but I've got a friend getting SS so we'll both give each other every starter pokémon at the start, trading endless amounts of Rattatas and Sentrets! But we'll also give each other Groudon, Kyogre, Latias and Latios and all other non-rares so we can complete all pokémon rather easily.

Except now the stones are given out at random for the first prize of the bug catching contest. If you can just restart each time you get a different stone you can probably get one easily, and if not you have three chances per week. Unless they changed it from Gen 2 the contest was very easy to win either way.

And you can get a Growlithe/Vulpix before the first gym in the remakes I believe. Just like in Crystal. Vulpix might almost be better at the beginning because of how slowly Growlithe levels... And you'll still be without Arcanine for a while because Arcanine only gets extremespeed naturally, as opposed to Growlithe's flare blitz, crunch, and so on.

Ah, did not know that. Still, that's a pretty big hassle when Typlosion is still better than Arcanine, except perhaps for Extremespeed, but then again you get a Dratini with Extremespeed for free don't you?

I can confirm that it has. Not to surprising to be honest. If I like it enough I may go out and purchase it along with a DS.

Edit: I can also confirm it's damn near impossible to get to work.

My friend is offering me his old, fat DS for $20. Really good deal, and I've used it too. It's in great condition.

Been getting back into Pokemon, probably gonna get whatever remake has Growlithe in it (which one has it?).

You have to use WinDs Pro along with No$zoomer and no$gba and have GBA BIOS as your startup point. Well, maybe you don't have to have all that but that's the only way I could get it to work. It took a while to figure out but once I had WinDs Pro, it went pretty smoothly.

I'm borrowing my friend's acekard to try out the leaked version of HG and it's the full English version, like the entire American release one not a crappy port. It's great so far and I'm definitely getting it. I figured out how to get it to work on there too, you just have to update to Akaio 1.6 firmware, after that there's no crash.

Even if it's a dumb story, telling it changes other people just the slightest little bit, just as living the story changes me. An infinitesimal change. And that infinitesimal change ripples outward-ever smaller but everlasting. I will get forgotten, but the stories will last. And so we all matter-maybe less than a lot, but always more than none.

Growlith is one of the most elusive pokemon for me. Every generation, I have picked the wrong version in order to get growlith. #-o
