Should you judge music by it's fans?

I, for one, am getting sick of this. Every style of music on the planet nowadays has to have it's own type of people. The ravers all hate rock and dress in flourescant colours, the rockers all hate rave and dress in black. If a raver listens to rock, they are disowned. But why? Why should you disown someone based upon their musical taste?

I try to be as musically broad as possible ; i listen to everything from Hype, a drum n bass producer, to funeral to a friend and even some classical music. If i had to put myself, fashion wise, into a group, it'd be ska - but ska is one of the many styles of music i'm accustomed to.

Is it blind to judge someone on what they listen to? Music may be simple in perspective, but why should we let music control the way we live our lives? Should all Funeral For A Friend fans cut their wrists and cry at every given point? Should every Trance addict take ecstacy and wake up in a pool of their own vomit? Should every metalhead have long hair and disregard their appearance altogether?

It's becoming harder to see why people believe so strongly in music changing who you are. Music may be able to alter your mood, but it certainly shouldn't control your life, so this is a plea.

Be musically broad - don't be ashamed to listen to anything you think sounds good, and should someone tell you otherwise, tell them where to stick it.

I'm a metalhead and I have long hair, but I make sure to be sexay for the ladies.

Only judge pop "music" by its fans, everything else is unable to be judged.

You'll find that it stops happening once people grow up.

Right. Based on no knowledge of psychology or anything remotely similar, here's my cliche' response...

Teenagers are trying to find who they are, so when they find something they're really into, like a musical style, they cling to it with everything they have.

Sound's pretty accurate to me.

I guess I am a little too cliche. I mean I'm into hardcore/screamo/speed metal music and I guess I dress my own way but I have the same hair style as everybody else (which is the short hair, long bangs sweeped to one side) and sometimes accompanied by a touqe. Meh, songs are good with good meaning and a fast energetic beat and heavy screaming, I dunno I like it.

I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music. For example when I'm at a party and the music being played is the regular dance mix stuff I'll be okay because I know even if they did play the music I like no one would be able to dance to it. Country, however, crosses the line for me. I can't stand it and most people will agree other than the ones with unique taste. I don't see why people should be judged based on what to listen to everyone has their different tastes and just because you like one type of music doesn't mean you're not allowed to like another.

A lot of kids brainwash themselves into liking the "cool" music and then use their "cool" music as one of their standards of how to judge others and see whos cool and whos not.

This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.

It's pretty simple, isn't it? Listen to what you think is good. If you don't do that, you're lame.

I dress in black, but that's owing more to the fact that I look a lot better in black than anything else. I'm proud to say I'm the only person I know who openly carries a bag of polyhedral (4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, 12- or 20-sided) dice around.

Music-wise, I absolutely detest rap for the idiotic concept that it is, and I like pretty much anything else with the exception of punk, though I'm partial to soft rock and J-Pop. I'm cool with classical music as well. I'm the senior flautist at my school.

Its like saying bunch of Fans likes Country, Randy Travis or someone, I dislike Country, So I dont like it so I wont listen to it because alot of people likes it.

I know its said by someone else but this is also my point of view.

Pretty lucky for me no one has a particular genre of music around my way. No one disregards anyone and most are willing to listen to anything. I'll be rocking to Ramstein one moment then dancing to the Bakcstreet Boys the next.

Frankly, I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I've never really come across this problem in real life, only online. Well maybe a wee bit when I was in school, but that was 4 years, or so, ago.

I listen to all types of music and can't stand when people complain to me when I do :P

The only music I can't stand is 'pure' chav music. You know, the type that is all bass, and there's so much of it your heart doesn't need to beat anymore. To top it off, there's a bunch of pillocks 'MCing' along, spouting useless words with no meaning at a rate so fast that even they don't know what they're saying. How anyone finds that music good I will never know. Especially when Chavs with that typeof music playing think they can beat me away from traffic lights. Just because I'm in a nice looking car doesn't mean I want to race anyone!

That said, the funniest event I have every seen was when this car full of chavs (4 or 5) pulled up, Mackensie Jackets and everything, music on loud enough for Taiwan to hear it, reving the engine. The lights change, I pull away. The Chavs zoom off for about 3 feet, then the engine fails. Funniest thing I have ever seen.

Goals to get my skills back up to a barely respectable level on the high scores:

Well, I agree for the mostpart in what you're saying. Each type of music has their fanbase, such as rap appealing mainly towards blacks, rock appealing mainly towards whites. I'm not being racist, doesn't matter to me what you listen to, but that's just how it is.

I listen to rap, just because I like it, and don't really like country/rock and all that lol. There are some good songs, i'll admit that, but for the most part I don't listen to it.

The only time it's 'ok' to dislike someone for what they listen to is when they bring it up. That way your never in the wrong, :) I'm a rocker, a metalhead, i play guitar, have long hair and enjoy getting horribly horribly drunk after a gig. Does that make me worse than someone who faints when their favourite pop singer looks in their direction. lol :)

haha, its naivity to claim that people grow out of dressing to fit in. business suits, golfing cardigans, sports jackets and so on are perfect examples of how even the old people do it.

but i dont see it as being a problem. saying its silly when someone wears tight jeans and a black tshirt to a hardcore show is like saying its foolish to wear a snow jacket while skiing. you dress depending on what youre doing.and to further that example, if someone went skiing in a hawiian shirt and swimming trunks, youd think that something was wrong, and isnt that the same as wearing your suit and tie to a mosh pit? (although you do look damn spiffy)

although i agree that you should listen to whatever you like and not be bought down by other peoples perception of your music. and if you like britney spears, and own her t-shirt, noone should slag you for wearing it.

Maybe we should stop judging people by their musical preferences first.
