Early internet memories

Featured Replies

I had a weird e-mail address :XD: (and I still do actually). And AOL chatrooms haha. I had an ugly computer back then too. And I thought it was sooooo cool that my computer could "talk" to me (speech option). And I loved my computer games (not so much internet related, but whatever).. There was Put Put Saves the Zoo, and some game about that Arthur guy, etc.

I can remember us getting rid of the apple computer and getting a windows computer (was either 98,2000 or XP) and when dial-up was new (atleast in the area) and playing on a site that had a build in GameBoy type thing, and I played Mario and the original Pokemon, because I didn't have a GameBoy, was fun times... <3:

I remember trying to play Duke Nukem 3D over the modem, never did work though. I think the first game I played online though was Diablo a bit after it had came out. Was maybe, I dunno, 98 or so?

I can't remember when we first got internet but I remember not using it much until I started to play Diablo with my friends over the modem -- good times.

I think shortly after that I played TFC for a bit. I also do remember stumbling upon runescape one of those times (because my parents wouldn't pay for me to play ultima online) and playing it for like, 4 months. This was back when there was something like 3 worlds, open PvP, ect.

Long story short I thought I was the [cabbage] with my full iron set I begged (I was like 11) so I turned on the PvP active thing. Got PKed, dropped all my gear and quit the game for a number of years.

It wasn't really until I moved to germany and got DSL/Cable (I forget which it was) that I started using the internet more though.

going to s*x.com at a friends house when I was in... 3-4th grade, and quickly exiting out as his dad came around.

At primary school, we had 2 computers that people could use to make assignments and stuff.

The most common subjects were ''Dogs'', ''Cats'', ''Horses'', stuff like that. I was about 10 years old back then.

So I try to find info about ''cats'', (the dutch word for 'cat' is 'Poes', 'cats' is 'poezen' ) so I randomly type in the dutch word for 'cats'.nl and I see this website filled with a pink website template and human skin.

'Thats not good, quick, close it down' I thought and I searched for some books about cats after that -.-

I recall back in Middle school ('97-'98) just browsing sites looking for Pokemon cheats.

I do remember using Google though back when people still thought Altavista and Lycos were the best search engines, looks like I got the last laugh there.

Metal fans, check out my band!

Still the King....

Actually I remember doing this too. My mom used to be a teacher, so sometime's I'd be at that school.

Of course pretty much all the cheats were bogus. However I told my little brother them anyways for him to try.

I don't remember a thing about my first internet days, but I remember the first games I played, back in the late 90's. Kingdom of Kroz, and Duke Nukem 3D.

I still happily play Duke Nukem 3D today, awesome game, and I can't wait for Duke Nukem Forever to come out (or is it out yet? I havn't checked recently)

games.com was the first website I would always try to go on. But it was just one of those "parked" domains so I couldn't really play anything (but I didn't figure it out until waay later).

DOOM got me on the computer, searching for cheats got me on the internet, chatrooms kept me on there and gave me basic knowledge. Then games hooked me up and now I use it for social life + forums only..

searching for cheats got me on the internet

Speaking of this, does anyone remember looking for cheats pre-internet? I remember reading all sort of those "GameFAQ" like magazines. Or, hell, going to the mall or wal-mart of something and just scribbling down some of the cheats I wanted on a piece of paper.

Cheaters have it easy now, back then we had to work for it. -.- Irony fully intended

I'm pretty sure my internet experience came from a guy telling me too look at pulldownyourpants.com

I came out of the room crying.

I was 7.

From there miniclip, then runescape then here, then wikipedia/youtube. (With heaps of things in between)

Years ago I would go to the library to read. When computers started coming in after the internet was going big they offered free 1 hour internet if you signed up. Now I would go early in the morning before the big lunch rush and play fun games. I went on google one day and typed some cartoon name and went to look at pictures of it. That day I found out you could find naughty pics and noone was around to catch you(still didn't know what to do with "it" though :( ).

Then I told my friend and he got kicked out because the librarian was behind him .

He was allowed back after she passed away a few months later. He went on a Googling spree. This was also a time before 10 cents a print out. He would come home with about 30 pages full color.

I've got a whole Tekken (ps1) book on cheats and tactics! Which I studied to the T... good old days when I knew every move..

A friend to all is a friend to none.

Me and my friends, around 4th + 5th grade, started using the school computers a lot for crap like papers and essays..well, we all ended up getting done quickly, and we did it right. Eventually we kind of saw that the teachers were giving us these weird corrections to let us kill time :P

So, from there, we ended up slacking off with the Internet and Solitaire. We always had to use those cheat magazines and stuff for games. When we used the internet, around 6th grade, we would routinely somehow sneak onto our teacher's computer (it was in the back, away from her desk -.-) and look up our cheats from there. :ugeek:

About 6th grade also, I started RS. That's when I first used the internet constantly...so much time wasted. I quit in 8th. From then to now I've pretty much used the internet every day..

looks like alot of people here followed a similar pattern of internet introduction to me...

i.e. Find cheats for games/email (Marijuana-gateway drugs)

awkward first porn experience/online flash games (Cocaine) MMORPG's/forums (Heroin)

Myspace/facebook/bebo (crystal meth-lifetime addiction)

if you cant tell i used a common drug choice path to parallel internet use
