Tip.It Pokémon tournament 1 - Brackets Posted!

As some of you may or may not know, there is a little program called Shoddy that allows you to simulate Pokémon battles on any PC that supports Java Virtual Machine. Since there seem to be quite a few people who play the Pokémon games, I thought it might be interesting to set up a series of tournaments using this little application. If there is enough interest, the first tournament will be an OU tournament tier. If this tournament is a success, I will set up tournaments using different rules (Ubers, Little Cup, etc.).

 

 

 

To keep things manageable, the first tournament will be open to eight people. To participate, please post your username and your timezone.[hide=Getting started with Shoddy]1a. Windows users can download the program here.

 

1b. To run the program in any other OS, start a command terminal and type

javaws http://shoddybattle.com/client/shoddybattle.php

 

 

 

2. Once you start the program, you will see a Tip of the Day, which you can close (or read). Once you close it you will see a server list. Select 'Official Server', and click 'Connect'.

 

 

 

3. You will now see a Log In window. If this is your fist time, go to the 'Register' tab. Simply fill in a nickname and password and click 'Register' No e-mail or anything needed. Once you're registered, you can log in.

 

 

 

4. To challenge your opponent, simply select their name in the Find tab and click the 'Challenge' button.[/hide][hide=Detailed rules]Clauses used

He's far from useless. He has two moves that let him counter any offensive move, he can lock a pokemon in battle, he has a nice bit of HP, and he can easily take down a pokemon or two. Also to note is his Encore move, so unless a pokemon can knock off 400+ hp in one turn, they are basically screwed.

Exactly. In the Third generation Wobuffet got the Shadow Tag ability, which means that no Pokémon can switch out while it's in battle. With great defenses and HP it can come in, Encore a move, then kill with the appropriate counter move. It's even worse when it Encores a stat-up move, and it's almost impossible to kill without it taking at least one of your Pokémon with it.

Wobbuffet's ability, shadow tag prevents your opponent from switching Pokemon. Although it can't attack, it can counter attack. It can also learn encore, which makes your opponents' Pokemon use the same move for 2-6 turns. With this in mind, you can force your opponent's Pokemon to attack a few times, and counter its attacks. Wobbuffet has a lot of HP, but poor defenses, but it can manage to take out 1-2 Pokemon. Maybe even more. Another thing it can do, is encore a stat boosting move (Sword's Dance) and switch to another Pokemon and do some damage. Using Encore on a status move and switching to a Pokemon with the guts ability is also nice.

I have had one exception though, when I got Encore'd with my Garchomp using Swords Dance. Chompah pretty much 1HKO'ed a wobbuffet. He had a base Attack of 397, those Swords Dances just made him a killing machine.

Many that were useful then are moreso now. I've pretty much soloed the 'battle tower' with a Jolteon, for example.

Yeah, I would be happy without all the EV and IV stuff. I don't bother with it in the games, too much effort lol.

 

 

 

 

 

Btw for the tourney, can we just do max IV's for the pokes, I don't know how to calculate them if we can't just all do maxed ones.

When using simulators, it is assumed that all Pokemon have 31 IVs in every statistic, unless otherwise altered by the person on purpose in order to gain a specific Hidden Power type. There's no problem with using lower tiered Pokemon in a higher tier environment, but it might be disadvantageous to you.

 

 

 

I would sign up, but this computer and Shoddy do not agree. Also, I've had my fair share of Netbattle in the past, I'm done playing competitively, since it's just the same things most of the time. -.-

Regarding IVs: The game will assume 31 for each stat, then adjust should you chose a Hidden Power other than Dark 70.
