Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET?

Recommended Posts

I know there's already a topic about PS/GIMP, but this is a different question.

Have you used Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET and which do you like the best? I need one of these three, Photoshop is unfortunatly (sp ERGH) out of the question.

Also, which do you think is best for a beginner? All I'm trying to do is make relatively decent sigs with the program. I've used Elements and CS2 but only for small projects (and I don't own them). Otherwise I have MS Paint!

I prefer Photoshop most of all but as it is out of the question I would suggest Gimp.

Gimp is actually a pretty strong graphic editing program, it just kinda stinks that the user interface is so bad... :P

It's not too hard to use though.

I'd download Gimp and the PS demo. That way you can see whether you want to stick with Gimp or maybe want to try and get PS in the future. If you really feel like using a basic, easy to understand graphics program, take a look at Paint.NET. It's a decent application, though not the best one for making digital art. As you get better, I'd definitely move away from it.

for creating Signatures i would suggest the Gimp, also

paint.net has a quicker learning curve

but if you've played around with PS before you should be able to pick up GIMP pretty quick

I have no idea how to work PS. If you think Gimps not user friendly, PS definitely isn't.

I own PS Elements 2.0, have tried GIMP, and I just found PS much better. (I can't use Paint.NET because I'm a Mac user.) Part of my issue with Gimp may be because I use it on a Mac through another application, which makes it slower and less user-friendly.

^ X11 you mean? Runs really smoothly for me.

Yes, through X11. Probably something with my computer specs though, or my personal preferences as to how I like things to look and run.

I would say Paint.Net for a novice/intermediate person as it is very user friendly though it doesn't have many tools for making great digital art;things like a good selection of brushes etc.. - but look at Harrinator - he still uses Paint.Net. As you get better I would suggest moving into GIMP or Photoshop - I find Photoshop more user friendly than GIMP. GIMP just confuses me

Good Luck anyway

Paint.NET has a better user interface, but it's just not good enough for me.

GIMP has a crappy interface...(stupid boxes) but has really good tools. I would say go with GIMP because if you want tutorials, you can just go to GIMPtalk. It kinda eliminates Paint.NET's learning curve edge.

Well it depends a lot on how you like the 2 different layouts, Shiny for example like the Gimp interface and I just can't stand it, he can't find anything thing in Photoshop and I can't find anything in Gimp, it's all up to personal preference. The big difference between Photoshop and Gimp in my opinion is that Gimp is filled with a lot of "crap" (Specially filters) as it's open source but other than that it's not much of a difference, photoshop may have a couple of more options than Gimp but it's the kind you can live without. Paint.net sucks [wagon] to be honest (Easy to use but horrible program), I would go with either Photoshop or Gimp, the choice between the two is your personal opinion though.

First of all, I think you're going to get a lot of rubbish opinions from people who barely touch the program. Now time for my opinion (Hypocrite)

For me, it all comes down to personal preference. I mean, Soa and Thru use Gimp and make amazing stuff. But then there are people like Runemetsa and Nadril who also make incredible stuff. Then there's PDN (Paint dot net) Seriously I only know one person who is decent with that program (You know who you are. I think) <3: I really don't know how anyone can make something decent with that program. Most of what I've seen with PDN is absolute crap. At the end of the day, I THINK (remember, personal preference) that PhotoShop is the best.

What, Mac users have to install X11 just to run GIMP? Wow.

BTW Jopie you could run Paint.net through WINE, right?

My opinion:

1. Gimp is just awesome. The user interface isn't exactly user friendly and hides a lot of stuff but I'm still discovering new features.

2. Paint.net would be awesome too if it actually had enough features. Otherwise it's ok for a basic editing job. Nothing I'd ever consider for a sig.

3. PS rocks also, but it costs money and a lot of that too. But there are some features I can't live without that I use all the time like smart filters, panorama automation, adjustment layers, and I suppose you could say that the fact that there are a lot of professional tutorials for it is a feature.

Answer: The GIMP and PS, if you can afford it. Gimp does a very nice job of replacing it, but another thing I'd miss if I had to get rid of PS would be Bridge. It makes image organization so easy, and supports RAW (Specifically NEF) thumbnails which is indispensable for me as a photographer.

I'm pretty sure X11 came pre-installed with mah MacBook though, but I don't know.

And yeah, I suppose you could, never tried though.

"Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET?"

All those are same and you can do everything in each one. But in Photoshop you will do something much quicker than in MS Paint. GIMP is something between, slower than PS but faster than MSP.

I use GIMP and Paint. Paint for pixels and GIMP for vector art. Photoshop has too much options for me xD
