Jagex influence?

Recommended Posts

So recently i was reading through old forum threads i discovered that in the past non-other than Andrew Gower himself has in the past posted on these forums, ( -.- wow your probally thinking but hang on...)

what got me thinking was that at some point jagex obviously took some notice of what went on these forums and gave there own views on what people thought,

so basically what im getting around to is, Do you think jagex still pays attention to what happens on these forums?

and as a result, Do you think we TIFers are still as influence by jagex?

I personally have never seen any jagex intervention since i have been around and it seems people just treat the rant forums as a safe haven to (in some cases) slander jagex all they want...

so whats your opinion and do you even care what jagex has to do with tip it?

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.

Jagex uses suggestions from forums, they read rants, they read threads. Jagex even watches these forums to find rulebreakers I think, I remember some guy getting banned because he said he RWT'ed on these forums.

EDIT: Hehe, same join date. Weird.

I can remember a certain article, not sure what the name was, it's been a long time and since removed from the archives. You can find it mentioned somewhere in the older articles, really a few years back.

Well apparently jagex didn't like the article for some reason and therefore the tipit staff was asked to remove it from the archives. And I believe someone also mentioned to me that jagex staff have been given accounts on tif. Though they may debate certain things, they probably don't have any direct influence.

They have the rsof to take care of now, I doubt it. They most likely have one person skimming the forums and reporting back the big lines to Jagex, but they are not reading in detail.

I remember they posted on a Article about players doing things they never would have thought of. Things like the old drop parties and things like that.

EDIT: Found it.

The article was "Biased Banning Raises Brows", if you search for Andrew's posts you'll get that as one of the results.

I don't think they really have any influence here on a fansite forum. Their rare posts are just interesting novelties that help to legitimatize Tip.it as the premier fansite, that's all. In the end they aren't going to lose any sleep if you rant about them and say potentially offensive/libelous things (well, to an extent) - if they did, they wouldn't have their own Rants section on the official forums. It's all taken with a grain of salt. I think the reason Andrew responded to that one article is because it was part of the Tip.it Times - thus it could be seen as being kinda "endorsed" by tip.it more so than just a random anti-Jagex topic, though I know that's not the case at all (regarding any "endorsement").

Maybe they peruse tip.it to see what people would like to have implemented in RS & get a feel for the pulse of the community, yes. That is more like us influencing them than the other way around, though.

I'm sure they do still read TIF, although obviously not to the extent they did back on early scapeboard. I doubt Andrew personally reads the forums anymore, he's quite high up the corporate ladder now, but Jagex hav a whole team for community liason. I'm sure people from that dept. browse other forums to get a general feel of the communities. Afterall, you can't judge the whole RS community just off RSOF.

In the past Jagex staff occassionally made posts/comments on tip.it (and tip.it even has special rank avatars for them JagexStaff.jpg) but after RuneScape became more and more commercial.. The posts just disappeared like water from a dried river. Last ones are from like 2007.

It's been a long time since Andrew/Paul posted on tip.it, you can use the search function to find some of their posts. Maybe they still do read fan site forums, but in stealth without actually posting.

I'm sure they still do check over here once in a while, maybe with different accounts so they can speak without having a god like presence. Also, I'm sure they want to see our ideas and suggestions plus pictures we've made for it so it will be easier for them to design for they once said somewhere that there might be millions of ideas however there are a few that are better then my own and might do a better job then me (this being seen as a Jmods perspective).

I didnt read the article big paragraphs no pictures, ha.

But my opinion is yes they do browse fansites they have jobs for people who are just customer related not game, so i think they contact players walk around in rs, browse fan sites and such, as it is the players who are paying so they need to do some research, i think jagex really do look for target audience hard, they also had a post on the rs main page a few years ago about runescape being educational, like my teacher when i was in highschool brought out people in rainforest using flax for bowstring i didnt know that was used or it even existed for that matter a few years ago, off topic my light just blinked!.

i think although there appeal system is touch and go, i do think they are improving and they know their stuff, they really do look hard for detail like using runes instead of mana, making skills flow off each other i think is unique to the game, and yeah gone abit off topic here but i do think they browse fansites..

and i think the behind the scenes can be a tool for that, they post it and people post opinions on fan sites.. Right now they know i want that new rc minigame xp reducing if its not  and perhaps the biggest update we're getting this month is i'm unmuted in 25 hours and im never gonna speak again :x i'm employing the, opposite day/week/month/year/cold shoulder technique.

Well, I believe they are paying some attention at least. ::' I guess sometimes we think they're not watching because well... there's a good couple million of us players, and according to the Jagex official webiste, there's only over 350 employees. If there were exactly 3.5 mil players, (making this next number look pretty) that's like 1 employee to every 10,000 players. And according to that pretty number... well that sounds like a big job to me, but I think they handle that job well.

To answer the second question, I think Tip.it is an influence, but I guess I don't know how personally. #-o

I would be absolutely amazed if JAGeX did not watch this site and other similar ones. Free players cannot contribute to RSOF so this type of site is the only place the company can find many valid opinions and suggestions. In addition because there is more freedom on this type of site there is also more honesty. Presumably it would be part of marketing and sales job to keep abreast of the news.

As Runescape has got bigger, Jagex employees and the Gowers themselves have slowly drawn further and further away from their players. At the very start, they would chat to players, help them out and such, there was global mod messaging so they could send and alert to everyone saying "sorry for the lag" or something like that. There is now very little interaction between the mods and players, especially not between the Gowers themselves. It's become more of a business than a hobby for them, although hopefully it is still both, but since Runescape has got so much bigger, it has become impossible for them to stay interaction with people on a peresonal level.

cant remeber the name of the thread but it was a reply to an old tip.it times and maybe in the archives, however an easier way to find it would to be search for the author "Andrew"

I wouldn't be surprised if a few mods browse this forum under a different name - most likely the same name as their proper Runescape account. I personally know one mod who does, not going to say who obviously but I'm sure there's a lot more.
