Kenshinjapan
I'm 14, i can read as well as a junior in college and i spent most of my summers studying, in fact just this summer i got 1.5 high school credits and 9th grade hasn't even started for me. I choose to do all of that not my parents, I'm perfectly capable of making my own decisions. Just because you're a nerd doesn't mean you're mature. From what I've seen of you, I'd bet against it too. you can't tell a 5 year old to not swear and then swear 5 minutes later and you can't tell a 13 year old stop breaking the law and potentially harming themselves when your doing the exact same thing! Yes, you can. An adult can be in the middle of drinking a beer and at the same time scold his son for doing so. Illegality as well as relative maturity:age correlations support the suppresion of rude language and drinking among minors. The rude language/cussing [the topic at hand] because society intends for kids to retain innocence at a young age, to teach them goodness as well as booklearnin' to help them grow proper and whatnot, the drinking to keep the immature from negatively affection society [drunk driving, etc.]. A teenager should not handle alcohol if they can not use it properly. In much the same way, a child* should not handle cussing if they can not use it properly. Understood? *or rather, anyone, but that's a debate for another thread that's probably been posted at least twelve times anyways. preparing for my future is being a nerd? if anything that is a sign that I'm more mature than my fellow classmates, and while i may act goofy I can be 100% serious if need be. and no you still can't it's contradictory. If your dad said "Don't drink it's bad for you" then proceeds to open up a beer he's contradicting himself. That is the reason why young cildren are swearing, they constantly hear adults saying "Don't swear it's bad" then hear older children swearing away. If Preparing for your future isn't being a nerd, bragging about it, however, is. Anyways, would you be offended if a heroin addict told you not to do drugs? Our parents lived in a time where problems relating to alcohol and smoking were not yet connected. I can understand a man smoking for 20 years and continuing to after realizing that they cause cancer; after all, it's hard to quit. The parent(s) could be telling their child that these things are bad know knowing that they can cause great harm to you. Besides, it's common knowledge to protect your children from harm as long as you can. YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!
jjrox32
Kids these days are learning this foul language from all the violent video games and horrible television that they- ok, I can't finish this with a straight face. If children are swearing, it's the parent's fault fro not doing something about it and keeping their children from breaking out of societal taboos. Oh God, until about halfway through that first sentence I woulda swore someone had hijacked your account.
deloriagod
preparing for my future is being a nerd? if anything that is a sign that I'm more mature than my fellow classmates, and while i may act goofy I can be 100% serious if need be. Spending your summers studying. Earning high school credits before you get into high school. Bragging about your reading level. Yep, go ahead and say you're just preparing for your future. To the rest of the world, you're what we call a nerd. You're still young. You should be out having fun, breaking rules, and not worrying about the consiquences while people will still let you get away with [cabbage]. Trust me, I wish I would have had more fun when I could get away with stuff. I'm about to turn 18 and that means I could end up in prison for some of the [cabbage] I do. and no you still can't it's contradictory. If your dad said "Don't drink it's bad for you" then proceeds to open up a beer he's contradicting himself. That is the reason why young cildren are swearing, they constantly hear adults saying "Don't swear it's bad" then hear older children swearing away. If My parents told me they were okay with me drinking, yet they rarely drank themselves. My parents told me smoking is not okay, they have never smoked. My parents told me drugs are bad, they've never taken drugs (as far as I know). These days I drink, smoke, and dabble in the drug world. My friend's parents smoke and drink a ton. He won't smoke and he rarely drinks. You can't tell me just because some parents drinks in front of their kid, that kid is going to go out and start drinking. For me, it's about having fun. For some it may be the same, but for some it may just be a form of rebellion. Now I can't see a 5 year old having a reason to rebel, nor even having feelings like that yet but I'll bet you he swears because he heard some older kid do it and he thought that kid was cool. Riku3220
If having fun is going to potentialy ruin my body or my future it wouldn't be much fun for me. i was not bragging, Range_This stated that younger teenagers aren't as capable as older teenagers to make decisions. If i can read at a greater pace and understand better than a 17 year old that drinks beer why aren't I as capable as them to make decisions? I don't care if I can read fast, I read fast because I'm actually lazy, laziness is what makes me read faster so i can do whatever I want when I'm done reading. and deloria, you act as if i ENJOYED that! i freaking hated it, i practically stayed in 2 rooms that wern't in my house for a good 9/10 of my summer and going to sleep an hour after i got home so i could wake up early enough to go BACK to school EVERY DAY!!! we didn't get weekend breaks we went all day, every day but because of that i get to relax during the year while everyone else is doing the things I just did. Lenticular_J
the truth is when your a few years older you will realize that you were not capable of making all your decisions back when you were 14. I'm probably the only 14-year-old who knows this. -_- catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Ugh. People like you are a dime a dozen in these parts. If you're mature as you say you are, drop the defense mode [as seen in your above post] and get your act together. You're debating here, act like it. and no you still can't it's contradictory. If your dad said "Don't drink it's bad for you" then proceeds to open up a beer he's contradicting himself. That is the reason why young cildren are swearing, they constantly hear adults saying "Don't swear it's bad" then hear older children swearing away. If Please do not strawman me. My point was not "drinking is bad for you", it was "adolescents and children can not, almost invariably, handle alcohol properly". Using the words you made up, your point is correct [:the paragon of a strawman]. But using mine, that is, the one's you're supposed to be responding to instead of putting words in my mouth, you are incorrect. Society seems to have discovered that as human beings get older they tend to become more mature and, consequently, more apt for handling such things as those of the topic at hand- alcohol and cuss words. Society dictates that adults are fit to handle such things, and inversely by the theory of age:maturity correlation, children and adolescents are not. True exceptions are rare nearly to the extent of nonexistence. That is why, as society has found, adults are granted the right to drink alcohol, but children are not. That is why adults are expected to teach their children about such things before they are truly allowed to use them. That is why, in society's eyes, this is wrong. There's kids in my street; granted it's a crescent and traffic is minimal... but I've been coming home around 6-ish and just around the corner from my house (it's a downhill bend and I drive a lifted 4x4) and almost cleaned 3 of them up. When I was their age I was home before 4 or there was hell to pay, yet these ones are still running around on the street in the dark. Hell, I was out with some mates, it would've been about 2am coming home, and there were 3 kids about 11/12 walking down the side of a main road (not on the side with the footpath either)... .. :uhh:
Wisp
The brain is developed more. Regardless of how smart you think you are, your brain will not be fully developed till you are about 25. Studying over summers is pointless, it has never helped anyone really, and knowledge is not always as important as other things. Reading at a juniors level is nothing. When I was 10 or so I was reading books written for people in college, but it doesn't matter. At 14 you can't always make the right decisions. People at 17 who drink probably made the wrong choice when they were younger, thinking they were mature enough to handle things. Echofish
Smoking doesn't 'kill'. It simply increases the risk of getting diseases like lung cancer. Same applies to drinking. What's so great about life experiences? Live the 2 years and you'll get the answer. I can't really tell you the answer to that because, well, it's your life. It's your call to make it a good one. Some people have good experiences, some have bad. If a binge drinker had said 'no' to a beer when he was offered the very first time could prevent him from sinking into a life of plunging alcohol down the hatch. So that gives you the right to swear because you've spent more time on this Earth than he has? Honestly, they are just words, but I don't use them around adults and people with higher authority. It's called "etiquette". I don't really care if you cuss just as long as every sentence you're saying doesn't always contain a word like that. On my real opinion on this kid, he needs to learn respect. EDIT: Riku, I'm 14, I got 5 High school credits over the summer, my reading level owns college level, and I'm capable of thinking like the average high school student. But I'm very respectful to people with higher authority (this includes my parents), I don't drink, I don't smoke (I have, but only 1-3 times, didn't care for it much). I don't care if you get high, do drugs, drink excessively, but I'm telling you, you're gonna regret it, like it or not. I'm done. That's my 2 cents. The most I can tell you is that you'll be put in situations that will test your morals and will probably change them. Things will happen that will change your views on MANY subjects. Your brain will be able to grasp new concepts and see things in different ways. I can't just give you these things, they're earned over time. Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob. People in OT eat glass when they are bored.
deloriagod
I'm not... entirely giving up per se. He didn't respond to my points at all, so I just can't think of anything to say to him if there's nothing there to counter. Good point. Well I'm headed to bed so how about we go tag team on this? *jumps out of ring* You're in! :D Internet Marketing For Newbies
Powman3
1. what's the point have having fun if your going to die earlier then? 2. yes luck does have to do with being born, your parents decided to have sex that year instead of next, you were the sperm cell out of millions that made it into the egg and didn't get miscarried. Like I asked, what experience are you talking about? i know a 13 year old who was been to at least 10 different countries by now and speaks in fluent Polish. Is that the experience your talking about? or is the experience your talking about just being on this planet enough for it to revolve around the Sun 4 more times than me? because so far that's the only experience you've given me. 3. trust me I'm not bragging it was to prove that I'm just as mentally capable as any high school students and i never asked to be insulted you calling me a nerd when I hate studying is the equivalent of me calling you a methhead when you don't do meth 1. I don't care how long I live as long as I have fun living. Being condemed to a wheel chair and an oxygen tank at 90 years old doesn't sound like fun to me. I'd rather be dead. 2. The experience is different for everyone. I can't just come out and give you what you'll earn over the next few years and I just don't understand why you can't get that concept. The most I can tell you is that you'll be put in situations that will test your morals and will probably change them. Things will happen that will change your views on MANY subjects. Your brain will be able to grasp new concepts and see things in different ways. I can't just give you these things, they're earned over time. And that kid you're talking about, that's great stuff but not what I'm talking about. 3. I don't care. I have a short attention span, I'm extremely tired, and I just don't feel like argueing with you about whether or not you were bragging. 4. (Yes, we're making that #4) The way you talked yourself up is just asking to get your torn down. And I personally see a good bit of flame bait in your first few posts in this thread. Dammit Reb, never give up an arguement that easily. Even if you did do it with sarcasm :P I completely agree with this post, but (and I think Deloria will agree with me), you don't have to drink, get high and smoke to have fun with your life. And you don't have to listen to him, you can do whatever you want. It's your life. Seriously. Make the most of it or live the rest of your life in a boring house. And Baal, I really do respect you and your posts, but that's an opinion. In my opinion as long as it's not excessive (which it probably will be for a five year-old), I'm fine with it.
