August 14, 200817 yr TBILISI (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's pledge to send aid to Georgia means that the U.S. military will take control of the ex-Soviet state's ports and airports, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Wednesday. "You have heard the statement by the U.S. president that the United States is starting a military-humanitarian operation in Georgia," Saakashvili said in a television address. "It means that Georgian ports and airports will be taken under the control of the U.S. defense ministry in order to conduct humanitarian and other missions. This is a very important statement for easing tension." August 14, 200817 yr Control and ownership are separate things. I would expect the US to relinquish control once the humanitarian operation is over. It just makes common sense that they should control the ports while the operation is going on, otherwise is would hinder them if the Georgians were still running everything. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
August 14, 200817 yr More to the point this helps stop the bombings, as they would be bombing "our" air and sea ports. Clan Moderator from December 15th 2006- August 20th 2007Founder of: Terran Gamers, formerly known as Militos Deci
August 14, 200817 yr This is a creative way for the United States to prevent Russia from blockading Georgian ports and bombing the airports. Even if the Russians tried to blockade a port the US was protecting, the blockade would quickly be broken by the carrier battle group stationed there.
August 14, 200817 yr I was praying that the US wouldn't get involved, but I guess it's far too late for that now. All we can do is hope we don't make mortal enemies. August 14, 200817 yr Hopefully now that we are spending money on Georggia we can end the war quickly The money is exactly why I didn't want the US to get involved. Our economy is already [cabbage] and now Bush is willing to spend even more money? I personally would have let Russia and Georgia fight it out. I would rather see my own country improve and another fall then to see my own country fall further into debt and another be safe for a while longer. Internet Marketing For Newbies

I know that it's a bad idea to be putting money into this, but what I'm saying is that now we may speed up the process and have Georgia and Russia make peace. To the Iraq War comment, the insurgents will stop at nothing to blow themselves up for their God and 72 virgins and whatnot, while the Russians are actually sane and have logical thought processes.

Yes because we all know money > human lives :| And why does it have to be THIS country to lose everything it has to help others? Why can't it be the UK or Germany so we can have some inner-improvements for a change. It is not just 'money' its the economy; making many more jobless and into debt making them basically lose everything. 60M unemployed with families or 250K dead? In a conflict that doesn't concern us? Yeah, because most insurgents in Iraq weren't originally people protecting their homes and doing exactly what you'd do if a foreign nation started assaulting your country. Suicide bombings aren't an exclusively islamic thing. It happens in Spanish separatist regions, Ireland, Korea, China... You make it sound as if insurgents in Iraq are some mass of unorganized fanatics only motivated by religion. Nobody is only motivated by religion, not even extremists like Hamas in Palestine. The only real thing they want to achieve is political power and wealth on the shadow of "religion". Maybe if your entire family and siblings died as "collateral damage" in a failed US airstrike to find a 'terrorist leader', you had no job or future prospects, you wouldn't have particular regard for your life anymore either, compared to the rage you'd have against the country that destroyed your entire life.
August 14, 200817 yr SOMALIA SOMALIA SOMALIA! Seriously. This is turning a lot like it. Blue, religion is a very powerful tool. The leaders of Hamas want political power and wealth, but do you think the man blowing himself and his family up believes he's going to get some money for it or something? No, he believes Allah will grant him eternal paradise with all his virgins. I'm not even gonna touch more about Iraq, we all know what that ends up as. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Just because someone is not a Christian and does an act of revenge, doesn't mean he's doing it for his god. I'm sure several Christian husbands had their wives cheating on them and the men maybe thought of some sort of revenge. It certainly didn't mean he was going to humiliate/hurt/kill/whatever her in the name of Christ, right? That is just one example but the point still stands: Not everyone does the things they do for their god. Apparently you understand neither faith, but I'll tell you what I do know of extremist Islam - the suicide bombers do it in the name of Allah. Their motives might not just be that, but I really doubt they're killing Jews and fellow Muslims for sheer revenge. Radical Islamic leaders are incredibly powerful speakers. They motivate those people in ways I doubt either of us have ever felt. Sure, their motives probably aren't just for Allah and the paradise they're offered - but I'm sure it plays a part. I agree that the extremists brainwash these men into doing anything, but it is because their revenge led them to it in the first place. "Killing the men that killed your family" + "Heaven" = "Win/Win situation" in their eyes. Of course I'm not saying all bombers are like this. I'm sure there are some overly religious men left their families to help Allah. It just seemed by your first post you were saying all sucide bombers just suddenly wake up one day and say "I feel like blowing up America! Lets go!" I was also thinking this was also to protect the oil that is around there. the oil coming from Russia that passes through Georgia does not pass through the airports or seaports. It is sent from Russia over pipelines to Europe. Aside from that, the US gets none of it's oil from Russia. All that oil goes directly to western Europe.
August 15, 200817 yr The political and religious discussions on these forums are becoming tedious. I don't say this to complain, because I would simply leave if I had had enough. It would just be nice if people would educate themselves even slightly before posting. There are plenty of people who post whose opinions I respect, it's just a pity that they're beginning to be drowned out. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.
