Quitting

svk

Recommended Posts

I am going off to college in a month, and I absolutely MUST quit. I intend to take my studies seriously, and I cannot be bothered by video games.

So here's the question: HOW????

You must understand what I'm going through before you make suggestions. You must understand how much blood and sweat I've put into my character. I've had it for 7 years now, I think. To put it in perspective, I'm going off to college in a month, but I had my character since I was in elementary school! I've gone through puberty with this character! I've redefined my entire structure of core values and beliefs a dozen times while I was with this character! I've went from being a gangsta, to being the loser kid, to geek, to musician, to the "angel kid", and back again, and forth again -- all while I had this stinking character!

I think I've outgrown the game, in a way -- I haven't logged in for 6 months (until today), and the game just doesn't appeal to me anymore. But I haven't outgrown my character. In a way, it sort of became an extension of my physical self, not so much because the game is awesome or addictive, but simply as a consequence of having spent so much time with it.

Do you see the problem? I can't just.... QUIT. I may have outgrown the game, but I haven't outgrown the character -- in a way, it sort of became an extension of my physical self, if only as a consequence of me having spent so much of my most formative years with it.

I can't... just.... QUIT. I struggle to make a comparison... it's like --

Hey, did any of you write or draw stuff in notebooks or on paper when you were kids? Do you still have some of the stuff you wrote or drew when you were, say, ten years old? Do you look through it every now and then?

Isn't it some of the most idiotic stuff you've ever read?

But you can't just throw it away, now, can you? Can't just throw it in the fire, can you? No. It's like burning a part of your past -- you burn with it. So you save it. You keep it in piles, and you pray to dear god that your mommy, or your big brother, won't ever look through it, because that would be, oh so embarrassing! But kind of cute, too. Isn't it? Aw, look at that picture you drew of Sparky. Ew, is his tail growing out of his leg? Oh, but it's so adorable! If only that old dog was still around...

Read between my figurative comparisons and see what I'm REALLY saying: just quitting, or just changing the password to something I won't remember, or just locking myself out of my account would be a very disappointing finish. It's like burning your notebooks from youth.

How do I quit so that I wouldn't feel bad? How do I give my character the "burial" he deserves? How do I surgically remove this physical extension of self in an "honorable" way? How do I finish this "chapter", so to speak, and give it a sense of finality, a sense of closure, so that both me and my mind will agree that it's completely over?

JaGeX has stepped out of its way to make this procedure as difficult as it could be.

[*:2myo6qgq] No more player killing? Since when!? There's only the so-called "Bounty Hunter", but they wouldn't let me take coins or iron bars in there.

[*:2myo6qgq] Giving my account away is illegal...

Great.

Please advise.

Go to something like notedpad and type a random sequence of letters and words, dont look at it except to copy it. Then paste it into the spot where you change your password and then into the repeated part. Next go to your recovery questions and select a question then type a bunch of random letters and numbers.

Once the recovery questions set you will no longer be able to access your account.

Just do a giant drop party of all your items and watch while you get yourself lagged out by the thousands of newbs and noobs that descend on the Party Room. \'

Make an uber great drop party advertise it on the forums or whatever just get thousands of people to come to you drop party.

Watch the noobs log you out, and watch them get so happy about their drops, and at the end of the day you will have that feeling off your chest and finally you can quit 8-)

Closure? Why? I don't see anything wrong with visiting Runescape - or I mean your character - twice a year. I mean, you said you haven't logged in for months - so it's not like it's draining time from your life. If you really like your character, why are you trying to stop yourself from playing once in a while?

Can't you just play in spare time? i'm starting college shortly too, i intend taking my studies seriously but that doesn't mean to say i won't have time in between going out with friends and homework, unless you revise every single day for the next 2 years which wouldn't be good.

To tell the truth, when I saw the title I thought this was another "I've been loyal to Jagex for years but they've screwed up Runescape and now I'm going to quit and announce it as if people really gives a hoot" thread.

But I kinda understand how you feel, your player has become a permenant character in you, a part of your memories, a single bit of your heart, 2/5 of your life wast..... anyways its never easy to say goodbye to something close and dear to you, especially if you've been with that certain thing for 7 years. My advise is to not quit, don't go selling all your stuff to buy needles and put em in a drop party, and don't swear infront of a Mod. Your Runescape character will forever be there (Unless some bug deletes all of Jagex's memories, then we're screwed), it will not complain if you do not log into it for 2 years. So head onto college, get a diploma or something like that and play Runescape when you have a spare time.

Don't ever drop all your stuff or go Bounty-Hunting with them, some people say it will make you quit Runescape. That's true but you would feel very terrible for "betraying" your ownself and all you can do is regret. So study hard, but have fun at the same time. Dosen't have to be Runescape but remember... your character is always awaiting your next visit.

Exactly what I think. Ask yourself these questions: why do you have to destroy your character? Can't you just not play during the college period? If you never play again, so what? If you find time to play again, why restrict yourself when you make that decision?

Don't treat yourself like someone who is addicted, you have correctly organised your priorities in life, so you aren't addicted to the game. If you come back years later, you might get plenty of wonderful surprises. Runescape, unlike drawings in childhood, evolves.

How about you get someone who you know that wouldnt be intrested in playing and get them to change the password for you, to something that they will remember still when you finish college. Then you can just pick up from where you left off if you still wanted to play afetr college.

...or just change it to something you (svk) will remember after college? Nobody else needs to be involved.

You can't quit, yet you spent six months without logging in once?

Just spend four years without logging in once and you'll be fine.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

Yeah, you don't seem in anyway addicted and you clearly have your priorities straight so, just make sure your password is memorable and only log on when doing so isn't interfering with something more important and you'll be fine. You can move on without "killing" your account.

You really don't sound like you have willpower issues so I'm sure that RuneScape won't pose a problem for you. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Don't quit. Just leave your account alone. Trust your own willpower, you won't touch Runescape when you decide it.

There are updates, so just leave your account alone.

Yeah, like that zaryte bow

wait

recharge costs = ammo.

So, all melee weapons are overpowered, at least.

this combat triangle finally makes sense...

I agree with every post from Zierro on down (except Gremmy, don't do that).

Getting banned, dropping all your stuff, or changing your password and recoveries to jibberish will not benifit you if you had no problem not logging on for 6 months in the first place. Logging on to Runescape even once every for half an hour, let alone once a week, shouldn't interfere with your studies at all. If you can abstain yourself, then why bother grenading your account? I'm sure the general message has already been carried accross this thread :P

there is really nothing u can do to block runescape from ur life forever. or videogames as a matter of fact. destroying ur runescape account wont stop cuz ull just get a new game. stopping it wont help. its all self will in stopping ur addiction. im not addicted but i used to be... if u really want to quit then just give ur account away to somebody.
