I'm thinking of creating a website...

A) learn HTML

 

 

 

or

Geocities (yahoo) allows you to create simple webpages for free without HTML, also if you type "learn html" into a search engine you get tons of simple guides to get you started, i learned basics in about an hour. :oops:

Just put "xhtml tutorial" and "css tutorial" into a search engine and work your way up.

Make a basic website and host it somewhere.

Learning XML and XSL are optional IMO.

 

 

 

I'd be more towards only learning them if you plan on providing a RSS feeds or providing a service to people (eg: last-played song, game stats).

Html is pretty easy, but to render it usefull to make good websites you actually need practice. You can just take out a book from library or buy one, and you could learn the basics in about 2-3 days. Its not to hard. What website you trying to build, that might effect what language you want to learn.

Yeah, HTML is easy to learn, I was taught at college, but I had taught myself at home in one day more than they taught me at college in like 3 weeks lol.

Try Microsoft Frontpage for the start. It's like using Word or something. Not that great in a long run, but at least it is an easy way. No html knowledge needed.

If you're serious about learning, http://www.webhostingtalk.com is a good resource.... As are tons of other forums... but you should definitely sit down and learn the basics (HTML, as already mentioned) before you get started. You can't cook a 7 course meal without first learning how to preheat the oven and setup the stove. (Or something like that. :lol:)

I would recommend not using Dreamweaver or Frontpage. I've never like WYSIWYG programs. They may have been updated, but the coding in the past has been very messy and they generally just don't generate that good of pages. It would really help just to learn html or whatever else has been mentioned before my post.

Always a good idea to learn the languages, after all you'll never be stuck if u know how to script in notepad!

Both those scripts are incredibly bloated. There are come much cleaner CMS systems for free on http://www.hotscripts.com and i reccomend trying some of them before resorting to using something like phpNuke which is like 15mb or something stupid before you even populate the databse.
