I fail at goals.....

Seanthorn

Recommended Posts

Everytime i set myself a goal i FAIL.

So i want to know what the least boringist way to my goal is.

First, i WANT 85 mining. I have ALWAYS wanted 85 mining ever since I've played Runescape.

At the moment, i am 81 mining. Although so close, I am so so far from it.

I'm a member but I cba to waste my time powermining AT ALL. Mayve something could keep me going? Example : I need 10k coal and 5k iron for 5k steel bars, i need that now!

Them kinda things, but still, very tedious!

My other goal, 80 range. WOW! I was going good, went from 52-72 then just COMPELTELY lost interest. I want the mining goal first, but this goal is also on my 'list.#

I would like some comments from people who have them kind of stats. I don't want to 'power' myself to them levels. I WANT to bank every ore and be able to sell it, and i want to have some good drops from what i kill with range.

Thanks =]

I once did 1 whole week of woodcutting on willows to get my woodcutting to 99, than the next week I burn all those logs to reach 99 firemaking. Click on my RSN: Solisticez and check my stats if you don't beileve. The reason why I mention this is that I understand how you feel.

The tip to not let yourself be bored easily is to distract your mind. One trick I used is that while playing I will normally listen to classical music. It is due to the fact that if you listen to song with lyrics, you will end up getting bored with the song sooner or later, (that's why most game music don't use lyrics/songs).

Other than this, you can multi task, as for me I play on my laptop, so I can play RS while watching TV or simply switch on another computer and play RS while watching movies, anime etc. It works, especially if the movie is interesting. (This may seems quite hard as you might end up watching the movie instead and not clicking in RS).

Not sure, if I'm mis-interpret your post saying training is boring and tedious. Also be it a small goal or a big goal, making a thread in tip.it or rs goals and achievement/blog helps too. Never under-estimated how words of encouragement and support can boots you.

it's best just to have a few goals and work on them all together, unless you want something really urgently theres no point in just trying to get something and spending two weeks doing only that. it's obviously going to be boring if you do the same thing for a long time. i personally just set myself with a few goals and take breaks in between by working on other skills, i might not get it immediately, but i get it without getting bored or stressed out.

thats what always worked for me.

My main tips are:

*Set smaller portioned goals.

It is like food. It is easier to eat a little bit at a time in smaller amounts then to eat a crap load of food all at once.

Like the first poster said, Listen to wordless music. Classical relaxes you and makes you lose track of time sometimes.

Do what I did when I went for 99 Fletch, Woodcutting and Cooking... Multi-task!

While running the RS browser and in-game, just open up another browser and read webcomics, browse forums or whatever you normally do.

I listen to alot of instrumentals, which do help.

But cutting tons of iron then banking, then etc etc.

(I don't want to powermine)

And coal is as boring. Espeically when you look at ur XP left to next level. Over 200kxp, and I'm thinking it's going to take AGES!

When i get to the next lvl, i stop, cause when i see how much xp i need to the NEXT level i just quit, anyway to prevent this?

I would say do your ranging goal. My advise, goto the greater cage with iron arrows. Its way cheap and with all the clues you get, youll make alot of profit before your goal is set. On a side note, Ive been 94 range for literally 2 years, and i just got 95 today at mith dragons :) , so i know how you feel lol.

Well you have a few 99's, i really do want to get a 99, but i wamt to get a 'hard' 99.

Mining has ALWAYS been my favourite skill, and it would be quite unique for someone to get 99 Mining for their first 99.

But i want to get to 85 first, but it's holding me back. Should i just mine normally?

I dont know if this might help but dont look at how much xp you need to another level. I find that as I look at the xp I get bored a lot faster, I try to get certain goals achieved that have little to do with xp, like I will say I want 5k iron and work towards that. If you set yourself with a mammoth task like 50k iron and mining it all at once, chances are you will not make it there. I also do other stuff to relax myself like going to play castle wars, fight pits etc.

Good luck getting your goals.

Don't look at your exp every time you've just killed a monster or mined an ore. When you check your exp every couple of minutes it seems very slow. Because it is, wasting time infact.

Nice Mining, it's better than mine is. :) Just think of how far you have come instead of how far you have to go. Listen to music like others have said, and talk to your RS friends. It will pass the time. And remember that Nike's slogan: Just do it.

If you can get 81, you can get 85. And remember, you're not in a rush so don't stress about it too much.

I would try to set a daily goal so that you don't get bored trying to do the same thing all day. Try doing something like mining some amount of ores or some amount of exp everyday you have a decent amount of time to do that, and then after you do that goal you stop working on that skill until the next day. It might help taking breaks and playing some minigames and other things.

Regarding mining, personally I find it a lot more enjoyable to mine a mix of ores, and superheat addy and mithril bars for inventory space. So I mine addy, mithril, coal, gold, silver in whatever mix it spawns in.

Mining only one kind of ores simply bores me to hell ;)

Please think before you ask a question. If you ask the right question, its much more likely you get the answer you are looking for :)

What helps for me is telling myself: 'Just do it and you wont ever have to think about levelling it again'.

I did this for 70 mining and hunter, very boring but I guess it worked.

Lol, I detest mining too. I can't even get it to 60. Still break it up, have some fun, it'll come. <-- I have hte same problem.

Thoroughly retired, may still write now and again

Don't do it if you don't feel like it. If you feel like training melee, go train for an hour untill your bored. Then go craft or whatever you want. Then go play a few rounds of castle wars if you want to. Do whatever you find fun, the levels will come. Yeah, it isn't as fast as powertraining, but I can honestly say I've had fun training; whenever I get bored I do something else.

Alternate between iron ore + coal mining and crash star mining works too. Even though you can't get more than 200 star dust reward + 200 star dust for the next day, the exp is still pretty decent too.

Other than that you can try switching location to avoid being bored easily, for example fishing colony iron spots, cave golbin mine, yanille iron ore spots are pretty close to the bank too.

Also, coal are slow. Why not power mine granite and sell them to the grand exchange and use the money to buy coal. Faster mining exp and you get the coal you want to.

Plus, about listen to instrumental music, it also make a difference which type you listen. Well for me I listen to music of the Baroque Era, and most classical music have tempo indication, choose those pieces with Allegro, Presto, Vivace tempo, you will feel less bored. Btw even the composer matters too, for instance Bach for his complexity, Vivaldi for his Allegro movement and etc. Each composer got his own style.

I would try to set a daily goal so that you don't get bored trying to do the same thing all day. Also this work too, try to reward yourself for like mining 5000 iron ore. So you will feel more motivated to do the mining. Try and add in Positive and Negative reinforcement to ensure that you will keep to the goal.

Drinking Tea helps too, I suggest drinking those classic tea like Irish Breakfast, English Breakfast, Ceylon, Darjeerling and Earl Grey. Lapsang Souchong works too.

If you get bored at something then stop doing it until you get interested again. If you play a game in a way that is boring to you then you're missing the whole point of gaming.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

My advice would be to not set goals such as "I'll mine 5000 ores then I'll go rest", by doing that you'll only be thinking about resting thus quality of work decreases. What I suggest is that you continue doing whatever goal you are currently doing(As per normal) and when you feel bored, leave to play maybe a minigame for a few hours then come back. Try alternating minigames and not stick to the same one unless its something like C wars.

Another tip is to not set those skill progress bar things on your signature. Some may feel that it is telling you "how much you've done" while I personally feel that it conveys "how much you're left with" which is a big de-motivator.

Oh and DON'T look at your experience points, I'd suggest looking at maybe once in 5 levels.
