Name some movies where the protaganist fails

____

or dies at the end.

And explain how it is.

The more complex the better :)

Just looking for some good movies (like 15-20) which I can use to isolate key plot differences between movies where the protaganist fails and those where they win.

Results will be going into a self-critic-movies doco for some friends and anyone else who wants it.

I'm sick of doing it for them :x

i dont know many where the protagonist fails, but i do know many where they die.

saving private ryan has the main protagonist die (not private ryan, but the guy that the movie follows through most of it).

donnie darko, donnie darko dies

monty pythons life of brian, brian dies

resevoir dogs, all main charachters die

gladiator, i think the main charachter dies, i cant remember anymore so dont quote me on that

and the only one (that i can think of) where the main charachters fail...

dr strangelove (or how i learned to stop worrying and love the bomb), everyone dies, and by everyone i mean everyone.

im sure there are more that i cant remember right now, ill edit them in later. and if you want the descriptions (of the ones you havent seen) tell me which ones.

I was just thinkin about something like this this morning, I hate how in movies you know who dies and who survives before you watch it. I've never seen Psycho but wasn't the girl who died in the infamous shower scene one of the main characters? That might not count though...

This doesn't really count but when Samuel L. Jackson, easily the most famous person in the movie "Deep Blue Sea" dies, that was unexpected.

He fails to beat Creed after all his hard work though :P Something I figured the original poster knew since everyone and their dog has seen Rocky by now.

I know the price. I pay it gladly.

Better name Rocky III then, where his trainer dies from a heart attackt, or Rocky IV, where Appolo dies in a boxing match.

What the hell? Get a life? You've been living under a rock for past 29 years? What the hell is the use of living when you havn't seen Rocky? :P

Oh, for the record, I'm just kidding, I don't want to stay up all night to appologize myself to Runesmithie because he/she might be offended. So I'll do it now! Don't be offended! Oh, and just to make Rizla mad, I'll put this in extra small letters.xD

I think the biggest one for me would be Seven. There's no way i could describe the failing without including the entire plot of the movie, and spoiling it completely for anyone who hasn't seen it, so i won't try.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

Someone said Gladiator already but they weren't sure, but they are correct (indy500fan).

The main guys dies in the end, but he fails even though he manages to kill his enemy. His goal was to get his freedom back, which he doesn't. I love that movie btw.

Um how bout Star Wars?

I mean the last movie ended with the bad guys winning. Not to mention alot of Jedis being killed.

You realize that the last Star Wars movie that just was/still is in theaters is number 3 in the series and that there are 6 of them, right ? The last one, storyline-wise is "The Return of the Jedi".

Ok, I know they came out in a weird order, but if you like Star Wars, surely you know that. Release dates (date-ordered, not storyline-ordered):

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
