Perakp
Since when is there a 'normal' ? It's normal to be different? Hence why I stopped trying to be anything years ago, I just am, like the person above
Quoi_Tu
Am I different? Yes. I'd rather die than follow popular culture or societal norms aimlessly. It sounds so boring. When I did a Myers-Briggs test a while ago, the site claimed only 1.5% of men have the same personality type as me according to the test. Only 2.5% of females have it. Only one other person in my whole year at high school would probably have had the same personality type as me. That made me go "wow". I can never focus as well as other people. I always have a tendency to drift off and day dream for a while before snapping myself back into reality. What type did the Myers-Briggs test say you were? Going back to the original post, one thing I am convinced of is that there is another form of energy other than the combustion system we have built everything on. Sure there's nuclear, but that's, well, radioactive. I am sure there is a form of energy as usable as the hydrocarbon system we have built so much on. I often ponder what the world would be like if it did not run on what basically comes down to fire. Electricity. Electricity comes, for the most part, from where, again? Currently, mainly coal plants in the US. You asked a form other than combustion and I gave you one. No need to be sarcastic. SOLAR ENERGY I've always wanted to put big bold letters in a post... Also, think electric cars, stoves, heating systems, etc. Beer
Housepig
I personally hate the idea of "normality". While most people are more inclined to do something if others are doing it, it's the complete opposite for me. For example, when we had to read out speaches in school last week, I was nervous untill some people started refusing to do it; that made me more determined. If absolute power corrupts absolutely, where does that leave God?
ThurinEthir
But anyway, you can be "cool" and still be a good person. I don't know if it's just me, but people were terrible last year, but this year being good seems to be the new thing. Can't say I'm complaining. Honestly, the truly cool people are the ones that are nice. There's a kid at my school, everyone loves him. Why? He's extremely athletic, quite smart, and on top of all that, probably the nicest guy around. There is no doubt in my mind that if we voted, he would be elected the coolest kid. I guess I kind of defy the Asian nerd stereotype, and that's how I'm different. While I'm Asian, my parents have never forced me to do anything outside of school and church, and I don't obsess over my grades. (Okay, maybe I do...) While I'm a nerd (And proud), I'd like to say I'm not unpopular, having played some sports when I was young and befriending all the athletes, who are now the jocks. Something else I've realized - Religiously and ethnically, I'm part of the two largest groups out there. I'm a Christian (Protestant), and I'm Chinese (Technically I'm not, but I have Chinese roots somewhere...), yet when you combine those two together...Not that common. Though I easily slide under the nerd stereotype, I'm really not that similar to my friends. Cenin pân nîd, istan pân nîd, dan nin ú-cenich, nin ú-istach.Ithil luin eria vi menel caran...Tîn dan delu. rangeor
People tell me i'm weird all the time, I can't tell if they mean it in a good way or not though. And I guess I kinda am, people always tell me they think i'm on drugs when i've never even tried them before. I used to be pretty popular in middle school, but I moved right after I graduated so starting high school I knew no one and i've been pretty quiet. I decided to grow a half beard, like a beard only on the right side of my face, but it got annoying having to answer "HEY WHY DID YOU SHAVE HALF OF YOUR FACE" ten times a day, so I shaved it off. And Lenticular, I would have expected you to be one of the more popular people at your school.

No one wants to be like everyone else (well, I suppose some do), but they also don't want to deviate so far as to be an outcast (again, some exceptions). It's completely normal to want to fit in just enough, so as to make friends and be happy within society, but not so much that you lose your own identity. Shinjula
Hi lenticular (seen you on a couple of other threads) You can indeed make a triangle with 2 obtuse angles, in fact you can make one with three obtuse angles, the phrase you are looking for is "Elliptic Geometry" Perhaps it would be easier to explain how to make a triangle with three right angles.... Imagine standing at the north pole, then face south and walk a mile in that direction, then turn 90 degrees to your left and face east, then walk another mile. Finally turn another 90 degrees to your left and walk another mile north. You just marked out the edges of a triangle with three right angles. Now some of you might say yes but the lines werent straight, true in this case, however there are in mathematics geometries with the same properties as the surface of the sphere which stay flat and in those geometries triangles an indeed have more that 180 degree in their interior angles. If you substitute an ellipse for a circle you can get triangles with 3 obtuse angles, if you subtitute a hyperbolic surface for the sphere you get triangles with angles which add up to less than 180 degree. Now you can go talk to your maths teacher and ask him to explain why he [bleep]ed at you for trying to do something which is a fairly basic maths concept (at least within the last hundred years or so) called non-euclidean geometry This picture below is by M.C.Escher and uses the poincare representation of hyperbolic geometry to show in euclidean geometry what a tiled pattern in non euclidean geometry would look like... and heres a similar one for Eliptic Geometry Theres also a two part vid on youtube thats really good which also talks about knot theory and how it relates to hyperbolic geometry which you might find interesting [in a really approachable sort of way, you dont need a degree in topology to understand it]. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AGLPbSMxSUM http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MKwAS5omW_w

Im impressed with myself. :geek: Oh, on the subject of triangles, it is possible to make a triangle with more then 180 degrees. Basically, make one angle 179 degrees. Therefore, the other two angles must be at least 1 degree, making a total of 181 degrees. Im not sure if the lines would cross or something, but hey. Aren't I smart?
