Ehh, you don't have to have a long title to be different. "Nonconformist" works just fine for me.

Non-conformity is a myth. If your not conforming to one, your conforming to another.

Reminds of me of the southpark Goth episode.

"If you want to be a non-conformist you have the wear all black like us, listen to goth music like us and do what we do"

Yep, that episode sums up my belief well. :)

Basically, make one angle 179 degrees. Therefore, the other two angles must be at least 1 degree, making a total of 181 degrees. Im not sure if the lines would cross or something, but hey. Aren't I smart?

You've never heard of non-integers?

Nonsense, whilst there are plenty of people conforming to the stereotype of non-conformist,especially plenty of fashion victims who wear whatever groups colours is fashionable this week, be it goth, emo punk or grunge, that doesnt mean every one conforms, its easy enough to find your own path if you look for it.

I see a lot of people tap themselves on the shoulder about how "different" they are. Of course I don't know anyone of you, but in my experience a lot of people who claim to be different aren't all that different after all, only wish to be so.

"Only a few people are different, even less are normal."

except that we are all different. Every feature of humanity is on a bell curve, no two people are at the same point on every bell curve and everybody will be at the edge of one bell curve or another.

Being different doesnt have to mean dressing different, or listening to unusual music, being different is simply realising that no one thinks like you do, because nobody does.

We all think in such radically different ways about things, its easy to be different

Well, that takes all the fun out of stereotyping.

Sure they are different points of a bell curve, but their proximity to others on the bell curve is what allows us to group them together. Thus, we have the group called normal. It's understood people will be different, but their major aspects of how they behave and what they look like can be caterogized.

Actually it gives us the best of both worlds, it means those of us who want to find commonalities with others can do it, and those who want to stand out can do it too.

Okay, you got me there. I conform to my own belief system which deviates away from normalcy. In other words, I'm that kid that gets looked at funny.

Oh and about everyone being unique... yes, that's a given. No one can say they are "exactly like everyone else" but compared to the average human being, there is a lot of room for leeway when it comes to nonconformity. It's possible.

I always have done whatever the hell I want, If it conforms to whatever people consider normal, so be it. If not, oh well.

The problem with that last bit is that there is no such thing as an average human being. The average human being is just an average of all measurable traits thrown together. No one person contains all those characteristics. No person is "average."

It's the same way that an average of faces is more attractive than the individual faces, no matter how many faces the average is made up of. I'd explain it better, but I don't have time.

In my opinion it's a good idea to do something different, it makes you stand out from the crowd. But whatever you do, don't follow someone else in their 'non-conformist style'. Too many people make that mistake and get grouped together again.

No, do what you want to do, and if it works, awesome.

P.S. Maths isn't the best place to start with non-conformism. Try a creative subject like art, music, design etc.

In my opinion, what makes someone a nonconformist isn't what they do, but rather why they do those things. It's the attitude, the intention, rather than the actual actions.

I think you have the definitions mixed up.

Definition 1:

of or pertaining to an average; estimated by average; forming an average: The average rainfall there is 180 inches

Definition 2:

typical; common; ordinary: The average secretary couldn't handle such a workload. His grades were nothing special, only average. [Hence the term "Average Joe".]

In the context I was using, I meant average as in common - not as in mean.

Good way to put it.

I'd rather be alone and myself than "popular" and give in to what I know is wrong or something that I don't agree with.

"... he takes to the streets shaking a banana at people and tries to convince them it's making a sound ..."

"Being different" is not always an appealing or reasonable attribute to aim for. Damaging one's image can lead to serious social alienation such as losing your job and girlfriend.

I don't necessarily agree that society should put so much emphasis on image, but I tend to accept it, mainly because I don't find it particularly difficult to build a good one. If you want to protest for change, you will need to do more than "be different" -- if being different removes you from (mainstream) society, your message will not get far.

(I interpret "different" to mean "radically deviant behaviour." If you simply mean 'not the same', then we are all fundamentally "different" in every aspect, and thus there is little discussion to be had here except what everyone else is saying, which essentially boils down to variety is the spice of life.)

>>"radically deviant behaviour."

Not quite sure what you mean by deviant, theres a large negative connotation to the word, which I'm not sure you are meaning, since in its literal sense its just a derivation from "deviation", which makes sense in the context.

Personally I do deviate quite largely from what is usually socially acceptable. I often challenge people when they behave (to my mind) unethically.

Perhaps a little background is needed though. I'm a 36 year old male, and mostly hang around with people younger than me, most of the people I know are from 20-30 years old, most of them are very cynical and a lot of them are adherents of the "Moral Relativism implies morals are a waste of time", and most of them have no emotional intelligence at all (being typically men) so some of them entertain themselves with things like griefing, some are mean to each other in the jovialest sense - i.e. they take the piss out of each other as a form of entertainment and most of them take out their anger in their lives on others without consciously dealing with it.

So when conflicts occur, and they do with (to my mind) alarming frequency, their responses are unanimously "ignore it and maybe itll go away".

I'm the only one in my group that is proactive against such conflict. I'll go out and try and talk to both parties and try and get a peaceful resolution. I'll try and energise others not involved to help resolve the conflict also. I actively investigate my own emotions and am always ware of what is happening emotionally around me.

By the standards of the community I find myself with radically different behaviour to those around me. Of course being emotionally intelligent isnt the most amazing thing in the universe, there are plenty of emotionally intelligent people about these days, but in the context of the world i live in its very unusual.

You have to wear the newest, best clothes. so you dont look like a bum Oh. So I have to buy expensive brand clothes to define that I am not a bum? Huh?

Males have to be jocks, females cheerleaders. have fun while you can, don't challenge it.Sure. But why don't do something I LIKE instead? What if I don't find anything that I enjoy within rugby/football/dodgeball?

I don't play anymore, but I'm grateful I played through the best RS times!

You cant make a triangle with two obtuse angles because all three angles hav e to add up to 180. Since the lowest obtuse angle you could use would be 91 degrees that adds up to 182 degrees by just the obtuse angles.

Although i do annoy my math teachers with square root of -1 divided by 0 :-w

lol I got math next class I will ask her that one. ::'

I think that everyone thinks they're different from the crowd, especially with the trend of being a 'rebel'.

That is exactly what I think.... seriously, if everybody is different, that would make different normal, making EVERYBODY normal!

Now, I can be, for a fact, different... I have been home-schooled all my life (Freshman in HS now) My middle name is greene (odd much) I play runescape, football, and get straight A's, Play rock guitar and classical piano.....

I am a fairly contrasted person...

You agree that everybody is normal for wanting to be different, then you use common examples to show that it is a "fact" that you're different?

Wow. Apparently most of my school thinks I do drugs a lot.

I've only done drugs like marijuana a couple times, and it really doesn't do much for me. :/

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
