stevepole
I know there are pads/sheets that you can get that absorb sounds, I just don't know what they are called..
Range_This11
Egg Cartons are a good idea. Coming from a drummer who has completely soundproofed his drum room in his basement, I can say that using foam is an amazing idea. If you can get large sheets of foam, pin them up on your walls and such. Egg cartons are a good secondary idea, but just like in recording studios, foam is the best bet. fastortoise
I used to have studio foam, but when my dad wanted to remove the wood tiles on the walls I took the opportunity to add on some sound proofing insulation. I personally find it works better than studio foam, and it's still surprisingly warm in my room, but it still doesn't block out my music entirely... although I find it impossible to do so. evil_mumm_ra
yeah it's pretty expensive, considering i could probably get something damn similar for free since i work at a FOAM FACTORY :P foam is definitely your best bet, if you can get your hands on some, preferably some kind of foam insulation so that you can still do something with your walls, but if you can't, sticking it all over your walls works too. it's amazing how much LP's site that he listed is selling those sets for, the foam and production used for it wouldn't be anywhere near that expensive. that foam is at most $0.50 a board foot (1 board foot is equal to 1" thick, by 12 inches wide, by 12 inches long), most likely cheaper. if i knew how to run the machine that "convolutes" (makes the ridges) in the foam, i could totally make you some of that, although we don't have aqua or pumpkin colored foam :( [hide=WOO TEXT! updated Jan 19, 2009 (last quote)] And Evil you mad bastard. pryomancer
Depends how big your room is. If you have a large room with large walls it's going to cost you one hell of a lot to cover it.

das1330
actually soundproofing an already built room is very difficult and can be expensive. As others have said, foam is the most effective way, but most any type of insulation will work - thermal insulation is generally excellent at blocking sound from entering the room. Actually installing it on the walls is the hard part; short of gutting the room and putting it in, then replacing the wallboard, there is no effective way to hide it. 123_x_pac
I remeber watching a show and they wanted to show people a cheap, effective way to soundproof stuff. So they used egg cartons, I don't remeber how it soundproofed the room but it had something to do with the holders and it worked well. So if your on a budget, just go around asking for empty egg cartons. I was talking to my dad and thats what we plan on doing, gutting it, re isolating then drywall it. But i was thinking i would go further than that because i like my music and movies loud so i would need more done 1980 Berlinetta with a 350, bored, mild cam, intake carb, headers, exhaust

Furah
I might try putting up foam in my room, like on the outside, the room is 12 ft by 12 ft (like the room that will be in my new house.) If I wanted to I could get my mum to have my walls removed, as the 4th one doesn't exist yet, and we haven't moved into it yet. ProtoGuy
Anyways, How the hell do egg cartons work..? And, dont they look ugly as hell? Well, what happens is the sound waves hit the different elevations of the foam, and get dispersed rather than go through it. Its the same principal with the soundproof foam, just cheaper and less effective. And egg cartons look [cabbaging] awesome when you paint them silver. :twss: I like stir fry
dorcus1
Assuming you want soundproofing so you can listen to really loud music/ videos alone: Can't you get some good headphones and an extension cord instead? You might not get the surround sound and it only works for one person, but it'll be a lot cheaper than literally soundproofing your room. Otherwise, ignore my advice.
