Wow, They Lock Too Many Topics...Chill You Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...2 weeks later i returned to find multiple private messages from her [abusing me]. What happened? Nout. Hooray for justice!

Ever consider the fact that we don't get to see your PMs ? Consider passing it onto an Admin ? No ? Then why the heck are you surprised nothing happened !? Sheesh...

No justice for those who decline to report the crime to the police in the first damn place... :wall:

Just deal with it. Lots of stuff, like this, is spam, but some of it isn't, and it angers me when a mod locks stuff and says "Don't bump old posts."

I believe you'll find this already explained 1 post and 1 hour prior to you making this post.

Now for a bit of explaining...

First of all - i'd just like to remind everyone that our staff (yes, including the Admin) do all of the work they do on these forums on a voluntary basis... so please - next time you feel like complaining about them, keep that in mind... they're spending THEIR spare time to try and make sure that you can spend YOUR spare time spam- and problem-user free. As far as i'm concerned, they do a bloody fantastic job.

Now, in regards to Topics which have been locked... as a general rule, most that I see locked are locked with good reason. There are occasions when I see something locked, and have a chat with the Mod responsible and ask why, and find that they've seen the thread from a different perspective than I did. Sometimes that perspective is more correct than the one I had.

That's another thing you guys need to remember - the staff are human (except for Wyrm, but we won't go there), and as such, they have feelings/emotions/opinions, etc. which have just as much chance of being of an opposing nature to yours as anyone you meet in the street, at school, work, etc. People have, often, wildly varying opinions on the same things. This also means that a Topic which, in your opinion, should not have been locked, is. And vice-versa.

However - IF you feel a thread was locked for an invalid reason... ask the Mod about it. Send them a polite PM asking them about it nicely - if you approach one of them in a way which is non-confrontational, then you'll find they will either explain why, or possibly even see where you are coming from and reverse their decision.

Come at them with an attitude, or worse, and you'll get nothing but a slap on the wrist or a boot in the rear. One thing I, personally, will not tolerate, is people abusing our staff (read back up to my first point for an explanation on that one), and deal with the abusers rather harshly.

And Blink, just as an aside... if you want a forum with few to no rules... there's plenty around... feel free to go find them. You won't be getting it here. Our forums and website are geared towards a particular goal, and our rules are set accordingly.

But you see, the Net is a wonderful thing. If you go to a place, and it's not giving you what you want... you move on and find a new place. It's just like club-hopping... you walk into one and don't like the music ?? You don't go and complain to the barman that the music sucks - you move on and find another which *does* play music you like. Sure, feel free to tell him the toilet is out of paper or some other small thing... but expecting them to change one of their core "things" to suit you is... well, aside from "not gonna happen"... ridiculous.

Personally, when I was modding, I let some border-line things slide for a while to see which direction they would go in.

And it was a fairly good 50:50 spread of needing to lock to leaving them open.

I quite liked it that way. And would really like to see some mods, specially those not very active in OT to hold their trigger finger a bit sometimes.

Not to say the mods are heavyhanded, just take a step or two back and wait a bit before locking perhaps?

There's enough people on OT who have the ability to turn a post around and most of the time people don't even get that chance :-?

It's kind of a trust issue IMO. But then again, jugement calls and some topics just shouldn't be left open.

Cliffs: Wait a bit on border line topics before locking please :D

3 words. Well said Grin.

Well actually, having also been given a temp ban after telling the idiot to "Crawl under a rock and die" after insulting me, my family and my race, I couldn't exactly report the problem seeing as I couldn't log in. After one hour of leaving the PC I was banned, so sorry for having different agendas.

I didn't report it later because they were not posting anymore and deemed it futile. However, don't have a go if we can't appeal in the slightest way. [/offtopic]

*Edit* Forgot to put this in  Despite what I said, the admins do a bang up job. I can't actually think of another forum where there is a real relationship between mods and members and ESPECIALLY admins and members as good as tip.it's. Grin's post opitomised it :D It's personal and gives a warm, fuzzly community feeling.

Kudos to you Grin :D (And the rest of y'all - even the female one >.<)

Thanks for your input, grin - clears up a few things, and well-said. :D

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

FYI, the male Admins are outnumbered by the female ones... so wanna watch yourself there... lol.

Thanks for your input, grin - clears up a few things, and well-said. Very Happy

You're welcome :)

Needless to say, Topics like this get brought to our attention eventually... I don't always reply on them, but there's not many of them that we don't see ;)

Oh, and as for the things that I cleared up, I take it that the fact Wyrm isn't human was one of them ?? *grin*

EDIT: Oh, and something I forgot to mention earlier - the author of this thread said "Watch them lock this one...". Consider yourself lucky that mad4u689 saved the thread with her post, else yes, it would have been locked as it was purely spam until her post, which actually turned an absolute rubbish post into a topical discussion. If you don't want a thread locked... don't post crap... pretty simple really ;)

All-time #1 noob.

on the whole i think the mods do a good job, 'good job guys!', but sometimes i do get the impression mods close threads because they arent interested in their content. that seems a little unfair to me.

Alot of people here say that we do a good job :) and that's appreciated here, but if you'd compare the number of topics complaining about the mods here, to the number of topics complimenting the mods... actually wait, let's do one better ;)

Multiply the number of moderator complimenting topics to the number of "thank-you's" a mod/admin gets in their private message box per week, and then compare that to the complaints topic... etc... etc... I'm sure you get the idea :P

summerpngwy6.jpg

the moderaters definetly do a good job, not to say i agree with all parts of the job though.

one thing that came into my mind as i was reading this:

on my favourite forum (nothing to do with runescape or anything similar), the mods are just people in the comunity, they clear up major issues, but without looking for it you wouldnt know they were moderators, they participate in all kinds of discussions not necessarily in a mature way, but they act like people. the admin is the same.

on this forum, i notice being a mod is a huge thing, they get special avatars and everything. everything about the "status" is trying to be extra formal, they really stand out from the average forum user.

i dont feel like this forum is much of a comunity, you could call it more like a city with a police force.

once again im not making an attack at anyone, im just pointing out something i noticed.

Might be a bit off-topic.

I don't know if this is do-able. But on another forum they have auto-lock when a topic is going further than 6 pages (very long pages, would be thirteen pages in Tip.it size), then the last poster is the new TS. I think that would be pretty good. Then you don't have 99 pages long threads, and not that much bumping etc, easier to moderate.

I don't know, somebody might have missed it, so I'll repeat it. Been three days now. Maybe one of the admins/mods can answer this question. I'd be happy to see a reply. :)

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

No way. I'd rather have one 99 page thread instead of 16 or whatever locked 6 pages threads. There's enough locked topics in OT sometimes as it is without having 4 "versions" of the same topic on the same page. It's a nice concept but it seems that it would get in the way more than assist.

@oz: There have been quite a number of users who still remained an active part of the community.

But I do share you view about it being somewhat of a big thing to be a mod here.

And while on the issue, THE ADMIN NEED TO POST MORE :P

Like the mods post often enough but sometimes I think the admin are kind of sitting up there with their ban stick or whatever smacking the naughty people too a little too often :P

I could pick about 7 current staff who without the moderator rank would appear to be normal users. But the majority kind of stick out :-?

Maybe it's just because I know what to expect but there's some about being a mod on these forums which tends to cut 'activeness' as a normal user back too much for my liking...

Omnislash, I think he meant deletion of the post itself that was causing problems?

Correctamundo. Sorry if i didn't make myself clear on that one - i did mean deleteing the problem posts in a thread, would be a better solution than locking the thread altogether.

Ahh. Thats not a bad idea then... I dunno, leaves a big opportunity for whiners, but yeah, it could work.

Mad4u, as a former tip.it mod, has leet mod hax

No justice for those who decline to report the crime to the police in the first damn place...

Hah. I've had four posts deleted by staff members, and I wasn't informed about the reasons in neither of the cases. And if my memory serves me well, the last time I asked a staff member why he/she did as he/she did, I got a two-week ban (some of you know the story); the other staff members had no record of it, I wasn't informed about this persons' reasoning, not before I was banned nor after, and the person didn't even change my rank to "temporarily banned". So excuse me for questioning your "justice".

I'm beginning to agree with this after seeing the friendly compliment thread locked  The one topic in the entire forum that really makes people feel good and isnt filled with flaming idiots gets locked because there are "other ways to have fun" WTF??

This is also supposed to be the off-topic board! Shouldnt there be less rules here than there are?

Yea thats pretty sad that they locked that friendly compliment topic. Im starting to agree also

lope6jw0.jpg

Just because it's friendly doesn't stop it from being spam. Not to mention that you can compliment people wherever you like, you shouldn't need a topic for it.

yeah, and we would probaly see a lot of the same stuff:

1. you have some thoughtful posts...blablabla.

2. you are very kind...

yeah, most of them would be the same answer's sadly.

anyways, I agree wit probaly 85% or so of the topic lockings on here. there are a few that i thought should be kept open, but for the most part its fine. because i can tell you, its anoying havin the same thread pop up each week, and bring down all the others.
