If life on mars was found....

What motive would one government have for covering up findings of extra-terrestrial life when this has been such a prime area of research for so long? More importantly, what makes you think all governments would cover this up? Keep in mind that the United States are not the only ones making progress in space research.

If life of any "intelligent" capacity had existed on Mars, we likely would have observed it long ago. If we were to find life on Mars, there is a good chance that it would be along the lines of microscopic organisms and bacteria -- certainly not a discovery worth "covering up."

Here is an interesting link on possible fossils of early microscopic organisms on Mars:

(Note that these are fossils, that is to say, even if these organisms do constitute life, we have no evidence that they still exist on Mars.)

they'd cover it up just like they did in the justice league episode, because the president went to mars, and got killed, and the martian king took over his body and controlled a bunch of stuff in the world. that is until superman got him.

Maybe. Chances are it'd only be something like bacteria and that's hardly worth covering up really.

I find it ironic that if we found just one measly species on Mars, it would make headline news. But yet we kill off at least an entire species each day and don't seem to care.

You mean the 'bacteria' that actually turned out to be lumps in the gold covering which scientists put there to help with the imaging process? Seriously, they weren't bacteria nor fossils. If they were, you would have heard about it.

I'd like to see your sources.

McKay and co-workers applied a very thin coating of gold and palladium. Sometimes this coating can obscure or change surface features. McKay and his co-workers tested for these kinds of artificial features by examining other rock samples besides ALH 84001 that had been treated exactly the same as the ALH 84001 samples with the bacteria shapes. McKay and co-workers did not see the bacteria-shaped features on the other samples, and did not see them on samples of ALH 84001 without carbonate mineral globules. The found that the gold-palladium coating did leave a very fine cracked surface on the samples, but much smaller than the bacteria-shaped objects. So, they conclude that the bacteria shapes in ALH 84001 were not accidental products (artifacts) of sample handling and preparation.

Nobody is claiming to have found martian bacteria. We very well may have found fossils of Martian bacteria, however.

From that same site:

It is still possible that the bacteria shapes are artificial, and that McKay and co-workers did not consider all possible kinds of artifacts. In particular, there is some concern that the rounded bacteria shapes were produced accidentally during gold-palladium coating, or are thick gold-palladium sheaths surrounding much smaller, real objects.

--

It remains possible that the bacteria shapes are Earth bacteria. Although McKay and colleagues found no bacteria shapes in three other Antarctic meteorites, they caution us that these other meteorites are not exactly like ALH 84001. Particularly, the other meteorites did not contain carbonate mineral grains. If it happened that a kind of Earth bacteria lived only on carbonate minerals, it could grow in ALH 84001 and not in the other meteorites.

I was initially taking from my Physics teacher, but your site has sufficient counter-arguments.

I have been too certain, but there's just the simple problem that it's so difficult to get conclusive evidence from a single meteor. And with something like this, mistakes and misinterpretations are all too likely. It is evidence, but I'm far from convinced.

By no means are McKay and colleagues presenting this as fact or conclusive evidence. It is a finding that they argue to be suggestive of Martian bacteria.

I'm really not sure what the problem is. I'm not saying you need to believe in this, nor am I saying this is proven fact.

Heh, ok, fine. Problem solved... for now. :)

So did they ever prove or disprove the possibility of life on Mars more than 3.6 billion years ago on the 4.5ish billion year old meteorite called "ALH84001" found in Antarctica?

I dunno about everyone else, but I hope life will be found... well, anywhere other than Earth!

Then I can go up to the Christians and be like "LOLOLOLOLOLOL".

Uh, last time I checked, the Bible doesn't rule out the possibility of extraterrestrial life. I hope life is found anywhere other than Earth too, if it exists, but don't bash the Christians on this one. :(

No, but the Bible does say that if humans can come in contact with extraterrestrial life, then so can the devil, which contradicts the Bible's teachings that Earth is the only sinful planet.

Right. Please give me a few Bible quotes to back yourself up on this one. As far I know, the Bible asserts that all humans are capable of sin, Earth is inherently good (or at least lacks the capability to sin). I have heard of no mention that only terrestrial civilisations are capable of sin, though.

You might be confusing the word 'heaven' here. Heaven is more of an alternative existence than what is actually in the sky. Heavenly beings, the Devil and God do not live on another planet. :geek:

Look, please just leave Christianity alone, it has nothing to do with alien lifeforms. :(
