February 27, 200917 yr Having ordered my new PC (with 550W PSU btw :P) I was wondering what was the best free anti virus software to use to safe guard my computer? I recently installed AVG on on this PC, but it seems to have a problem connecting to the website so it doesn't update and since I downloaded it Google screws up and I'm worried it let a virus through the net which I wouldn't want to happen on my new PC. So, suggestions?

February 27, 200917 yr +1. It's impossible to tell without knowing the specs. 550W could be overkill or no way near enough, depending what you want to run off it. "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

February 27, 200917 yr Either one. I don't know what brand(s) they use, a 300w FSP would run that rig without a problem... Choose whichever one you feel is worth it. I would advice on number 2 or 3 tho. 'Cos that is a better deal for me as I get a 22" screen included for a similar price.
February 28, 200917 yr I don't think so. My old psu was 330w, and I needed to upgrade it when I bought a 9500. My system isn't as strong as that build. If you're up to it, and if the price really is a better deal, you can always buy that pc, then buy a 400-500w psu and replace the 300w that came with it.
March 1, 200917 yr It would work if they have a good brand. With that setup, it gets closer to the maximum output of the psu. I would advice on the 500w option instead. The 9500gt is not power-hungry, but the 9850 is. Combined with all the things, i say go for the 500w option. Buying a aftermarket psu is also a option, but it would cost more. March 2, 200917 yr Personally I wouldn't get any of the ones you posted. Stick with Antec (lovely cases and psu's), Corsair, Power and Cooling, Seasonic, Enermax and Be Quiet! (there might be one or to brands I missed off). With the above you get a good warranty, a psu which isn't overrated (cheaper ones will state outputs much higher then they achieve), good value for money, quiet and good customer service. O and Micro ATX (or uATX) are a nightmare to upgrade if you get a bad case. March 2, 200917 yr The best free AV is Avira Antivir. Avast is not too far behind, although it isn't really good imo, too many false positives and can't really completely delete viruses. AVG is one of the bad ones nowadays.
March 2, 200917 yr +1 to Avira, once you remove the adverts. "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
March 2, 200917 yr I use Clamwin as my antivirus, but that's only for if you're sure you don't need on-demand protection. It's a strong program, but only use it if you only need an antivirus just in case. (i.e., you're not an idiot that downloads suspicious [cabbage]) Steam | Soup | Last.fm
March 6, 200917 yr I think Avast is better than Avria :( Avast has [cabbage] loads of falsepositives and can't delete viruses fully, that's what I've seen in some tests.
March 10, 200917 yr Avast! all the way. Gives way more information on what to do when you get a virus, helps you doing the right action. It's an awesome antivirus. If you want to test your antivirus, go to this site and download the eicar.com file. If your antivirus is good it should block it before you download it. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A VIRUS! IT WON'T DO ANYTHING TO YOUR COMPUTER. YOU CAN CHECK THE INTERNET TO CHECK IT. Here is the warning before downloading the file: EICAR cannot be held responsible when these files or your AV scanner in combination with these files cause any damage to your computer. YOU DOWNLOAD THESE FILES AT YOUR OWN RISK. Download these files only if you are sufficiently secure in the usage of your AV scanner. EICAR cannot and will not provide any help to remove these files from your computer. Please contact the manufacturer/vendor of your AV scanner to seek such help. http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm# I tried with my computer and avast! stopped it before it could enter my computer.

March 12, 200917 yr AVG has gone downhill a lot recently. It misses things and is generally slower I find. "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
March 13, 200917 yr I've always stuck with AVG but haven't tried to find a better one so there could be better ones out there It's tough at the top ;)
March 13, 200917 yr I only went to Antivira because you guys said bad things about AVG, it was wayyy better and I got my brother to change his too. It caught unseen worms that AVG couldn't find. ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢
