scootlaboot
So its official then. If you choose your beliefs/lifestyle simply based on what your parents want, then you are a weak minded individual and are not even worthy of calling yourself a person. Azvareth
Christ, for almost half my life, I've been able to wake up each morning and think "yep, Duke Nukem Forever is still being worked on." This news is strangely depressing. I'm waiting for this to be a hoax though. In a week they're going to release the game and go "YOU ALWAYS BET ON DUKE!!!" and it shall be a glorious day filled with happiness and nerd tears. AndyPandy
It's still being made. Don't worry: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/05/07/ ... huts-down/ So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth, These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf, Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in, Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything, Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel, Tear up the book and write your own damn rules, Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got, And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut, And realise that the other world that you're always looking for, Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door, And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas, After all, you were put on the earth to do this, So shine your light so bright that all can see, Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be. God I hope so, and no better way to put it either. This is sad news though. 3D Realms was the [cabbage] back in the day. I do hope duke is still getting worked on though. :(
Dizzle229
I hope this still gets finished. Just out of curiosity, what took them 10 years to make this game? Get back here so I can rub your butt.
Azvareth
I hope this still gets finished. Just out of curiosity, what took them 10 years to make this game? This is taken from a guy who was a level designer for Duke Nukem Forever for 19 months: The 2001 trailer was 100% scripted cinematic, and not actual gameplay. They built specific demo maps just to record video from to make a trailer. Everything you see in that trailer was phony. The typical work flow there went something like this: Designer would be assigned a task (build a new map, rebuild an old map, polish a bit of a map, etc.). Designer would work on said task for two, three weeks, a month, all the while lower management would be looking over it and making sure it was going in a "good general direction." Designer would move on to another task. A month or two later upper management would finally look at the work and say, "It's all wrong, do it again." Rinse, repeat. Entire maps would be done from the ground up, almost to beta quality, and then thrown out simply because no one would make decisions early on in the process. (Read up on Valve's 'orange box' method of design -- that's how you make games) Another example of is the fact that there was one part of one map that was being worked on before I started working there. Nineteen months later and the same designer was still working on the same part of that same map... I'm not blaming the designer, it wasn't his fault. I think the biggest problem that the company had in general is being self-funded. When you're a developer working directly with a publisher and you have milestones to meet it's a whole different ballgame. If you don't meet those milestones, you don't get any money. That right there will keep your project on schedule. If, however, you're funding it yourself, you don't really have anyone to answer to except yourself and you can quickly lose sight of just how much money is going out the door. The sad thing is the game had some really cool [cabbage] in it and had some really fun gameplay. The shrunken stuff was fun, vehicles were fun... oh well. (edit) and, I need to add, the best goddamn water in any FPS to date. I'm dead serious about that. It was beautiful to look at and interact with. Also, it was in development for almost 13 years. And the reason they could self-fund for so long was because they lived off money coming from Max Payne and some other game I can't recall right now. EDIT: also they changed graphic engines like 6 times or something ridiculous like that.
Uldric
It's funny how they say that Orange Box is the way to makes games when TF2 was being developed for just as long as Duke Nukem Forever. But at least that got released. It's a shame, I was looking forward to kicking arse and chewing bubble gum...

Nero
[hide=From Reddit...]Anyone who knows me on this site knows I'm one of the most unconspiratorial Redditors left on the site. None the less, check this out: http://whois.domaintools.com/savedukenukem.com The domain was registered on 5/7/09, the very same day that 3DRealms announced it was closing. Furthermore, if I recall, that news did not break to the internet at large until very late in the day - sometime in the evening. I haven't registered many domains in my time, but in my experience, it takes at least a few hours to process, up to around 24 hours. And look at the flow of "leaked" videos and pictures that have been absolutely STREAMING out of 3DRealms in the last four days. There's been more Duke Nukem activity since Duke died than in the last several years of development. And the forums have been filled with people looking at said material and lamenting Duke's doom. Apparently, we're supposed to believe that 3DRealms has been sitting on all this kickass footage that could have been used to generate HUGE amounts of buzz... and yet did absolutely nothing with it, even as their company was falling apart from beneath them, just a few months after announcing (again) that DNF was about to be released. Now, this guy (note it's the same e-mail addy) is really small potatoes, at least based on his site, which is the only real flaw in this theory. You'd think 3DRealms would hire someone bigger, unless they were desperate. But everything else fits like a damn glove. Never the less, you tell me, which scenario sounds more likely: A)3DRealms is staffed by a bunch of idiots who neglected to make use of all kinds of PR material lying around and instead let their company crumble, and in the meantime, this Jeff Shenk guy is SO goddamn smart that the very instant he heard the first rumor that 3DRealms was closing, he went off and registered SaveDukeNukem.com just in case. And put up a "stay tuned..." message just for the hell of it... Or B)This was all a gigantic P.R. stunt to manipulate the players and the fans with a fake "closure," release tons of footage to restore goodwill, and then to create a fake grassroots "Save Duke!" campaign... all organized by the ad men with the goal of [bleep]ing with the heads of you and me. I think it seems pretty obvious which one is more likely. Edit: OH LOOKEE HERE. Saveduke.com registered by an anonymous proxy the DAY BEFORE 3DRealms' closure was announced. There's nothing at the site yet, but come on... There is absolutely no good explanation for this that doesn't involve asshattery. Not unless someone can think of some other Duke who also needed to be saved starting a few days ago.[/hide] Thoughts? Lenticular_J
These conspiracies are my favorites. GordanFreeman
These conspiracies are my favorites. It looks like How2 is right, and here pretty soon we'll get the "YOU ALWAYS BET ON DUKE!" we always wanted, and wet our pants like little girls at how amazing the game is. Goddamnit I sure hope so. Duke 3D was one of the first games I played as a kid, around the time I was 7. I wanted to die with Duke (or at least play DNF before I died). I've been looking forward to this game for so long, it just can't end like this. And now, after I've seen the footage, it hurts even more inside. I just hope that one of these conspiracy theories are correct, or we've just lost what could've been one of the greatest games in history. George Broussard can't be stupid/foolish enough to let the company go under like this, or at least, I would hope he wasn't. Azvareth
If it is in fact a PR stunt then they're doing one of hell of a job trying to cover it up, seeing as employees at 3DR have already started looking for new jobs. Don't get me wrong, I would love nothing better than waking up tomorrow with the "YOU ALWAYS BET ONE DUKE!!!" scenario. I played the [cabbage] out of Duke Nukem 3D as a kid and it remains to this day the best FPS I've played. But meh, it doesn't look like it'll happen. Former employees at 3DR and other game developers have basically replied with "hah, surprised it didn't happen sooner".
