hi guys

the new SAT test has been administered as of March 2005. A lot of people think that it is a better test than the old SAT, some think that it has a lot of stuff that is really unnecessary. Analogies are gone, so are quantitative comparisons, but there is a bit more advanced math and an essay as well. the new SAT is also scored out of 2400, whereas the previous one was out of 1600.

I took the old SAT three times before starting high school and i did ok on it, 1340 was my average score. i guess this stinks because its kinda like i took the old SAT three times for nothing... :?

but i dont really know too much about taking this new one and i am going to be taking it soon. does anybody have any comments or bits of advice they would like to give me? or how to start preparing perhaps?

My thoughts:

The math section is much improved. I liked quantitative comparisons, but the new math does a much better job of involving logic and testing APTITUDE and innate problem solving ability than the old math section. This makes it harder for people who have just studied a lot in math to get 800s - there were too many 800s on the old exam.

As for the added writing section, it doesn't make a big difference. Most competitive schools already required the Writing SATII in addition to the regular SAT and weighted it pretty much equally, so it really was a logical move.

Getting rid of the analogies, even though I thought they were fun, was probably a good idea. There was too much randomness associated with whether you happened to know that particular vocab word or not. It didn't do a good job testing vocabulary, only whether you knew a few words that appear on most tests.

The only problem to me is that now when students say their SAT scores, it's biased in favour of the more verbal and humanities oriented students, and doesn't showcase math/science geniuses, because 2/3 of the test is verbal and writing. It also puts internationals and those for whom English is not a first language at a disadvantage.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

I took the old one but not the new one yet, and I'm glad to hear they got rid of the analogies. The addition of the writing section kind of annoys me though because we are bombarded with writing tests all throughout grade school anyway, and also because I'm a bit more of a math guy.

I think the best part of the new SAT test is that I NEVER HAVE TO TAKE THEM AGAIN!!! 8)

seriously though, I'm glad that they revised it. Escpecially the math section because it was mostly just memorization to get good scores not actual aptitude. And it makes lots of sense to put writing in there as well. As Mad said, it does favor verbal more than math, but if you think about it, very few jobs don't require any writing. And many of the math and science technical jobs require very good writing skills, so a score that shows that aspect of your ability is very useful.

I had no problems with anglogys or qualitivative comparison, i woulda done so well on the old sats. But i was born in the wrong yr. Writing sections pretty hard. Correcting the grammar seems unrelated to high school courses. It annoys me soo much. It's like the only thing brinign down my grade. And plus you have to speed write an essay... I'm too used to writing quality essays.

Man, I'm lucky I took the old one. I've only heard bad things about the new SAT. Everyone tells me that it's harder.

I wonder what I'd get on the new one. I got a 1270 on the old SAT I. :?

Even if it's harder, you'll only be compared to other people... if everyone gets a slightly lower score, that'll surely be considered.

And there were too many 1600s and similar (I had close to it, and I'm stupid) on the old test.

First, Ill say, Im dumb as a doorknob.

I got a perfect score on the Math section, and "met" the standard on writing and english. I thought they were a lot easier then they were before, but thats just my opinion.
