Do soccer (football) players ever get brain damage?

Featured Replies

Yeah, I've heard about American football NFL players and boxers getting brain damage that can sometimes even force them to quit the sport, but does this happen to soccer (sorry for you brits and aussies who like to call it football) players too? They do take some pretty heavy blows to the head from the ball after it's been punted 60-70 yards, but I've never heard of lasting damage.

I know there is a "right" way to head the ball, put it right on your hairline and you shouldn't have a problem. But still....70 yards and it's gonna pack a punch :?

Anyone know :?:

These days it's not very common, but I'm guessing it could happen.

But the balls they use are pretty light and if headed correctly wont hurt you at all.

I've never heard of anyone having to quit because of it.

I've headed the ball quite a lot that's been punted from the other end of the pitch and I'm alright (I think),yeah it's sore for a couple of seconds if you head it wrong, but who knows after 20 years of doing it :?

In the older days pre 60s perhaps when they used the big tough leather balls I'm pretty sure there were lots of injuries because of heading the ball, mainly splitting their heads open from the stitching :P

Well considering the speed at which the ball travels... I'm sure it does take a toll on your body. But as with any sport, there are many risks.

I would doubt that it would be possible as a result of ball-body contact.

body-body or body-stationary_object contact on the other hand could do it if the impact was bad enough but I wouldn't bet on it being permanent.

Aussies call it footbal?

Dont think so buddy

im not really sure...

i know the posts can cause a concussion from personal experience

Judging by 90% of footballer's behaviour I'd say they already have.

Rofl nice one Bubsa, I agree with you there.

I heard that you loose so many brain cells when you header it but im not sure it would go to the extent of giving you brani damage

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.

Judging by 90% of footballer's behaviour I'd say they already have.

yep, can't say no to that...maybe I should start thinking of some of the stupid things people in my team ahev said/done...aah, another time eeh :)

OnT: I've never heard of anything of the sorts...sounds very unlikely, there's probably a much greater chance of getting knocked out by an elbow anyway

Yeah I'd be more worried about elbows or high boots than than the ball.

Like that Celtic goalkeeper who was killed when he went in for a ball and got his skull fractured by the striker trying to kick the ball. But yeah that was 1931 and very uncommon still.

Woah, musta been one hell of a striker. Skulls are pretty hard.

Think you underestimate how hard a footballer, or anyone for that matter, can kick.

Dreaming of that face again

It's bright, and blue, and shimmering

Grinning wide

And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes

Yeh its proven to temporarily kill brain cells. I know thats sounds a paradox, but they grow back so fast...

Speaking of, i was once playing Sunday League Football and headed the ball straight from a goal kick and it injured my neck and back because it came from straight above me :? .

yeah......I know.......that's why I apologized.....

kind of wish I hadn't, now :?

And Purcell, I've never been to australia, so I wouldn't know what you call it down there. I just assumed it was like how americans use pounds, inches and feet, while the rest of the world is metric. Therefore we call it soccer, the rest of the world calls it football. If not, my bad.

Anyway, thanks for replies. I guess the risk is pretty low, but I've been getting migraines and I wondered if there was a connection of some sort. From what yall have said, either I'm heading the ball wrong or the migraines are unrelated.

Plus, high kicks and fights are more worrying anyway. We had a serious hockey player for a goalie once who got in a fight and nearly knocked the other guy out on our goalpost  I thought the sound I heard was the ball hitting the post

Heading a ball right or wrong certainly wont help with a migraine anyway.

haha me and my brother were at a collingwood magpies vs the western bulldogs footy game, and they were doing practice kicks into the net, one of them flew over the net and whacked my brother in the face  i think he got a bloody nose. Off topic I know, but I find it funny  we even got our pic in the paper

Ow. Well I guess that beats the guy at the baseball game who tried to catch the foul ball but was hit in the face instead.

football rules CHELSEA

I'm sure if a strike got the ball and took a full power shot and it hit your head sure, there would definitely be damage (depends on your level especially in professional) but if you head the ball right you might get at the most a little headache but never heard of brain damage from trying to head. Although i dont watch too much futbol and i'm only in jv highschool futbol. but um yea......not very likely

I remember seeing a news report on the subject once, actually focusing on youth players more than the adults. I know the adults kick harder, but brain development is more of a concern early on. And apparently they thought it did have some effect even if it was not hard enough to cause a concussion etc.

I don't know what that would mean from years of it, that report was a couple of years ago at least.

I've seen that happen to a few people whilst at games. People not paying attention get a ball smacked in their face, one was a lady who was walking back to her seat. She got knocked out and had to be stretchered away. Not funny.

Also once when I was playing I cleared the ball out the side and hit a small boy, who was sitting on the back of a bench, in the side of the head and he went flying.

moral of these stories? always pay attention whilst around a football match. :P

sig2ho7.jpg

To be honest I haven't heard of any bad long term injury resulting from being hit in the head with a football for a long time.

At least not since they stopped using leather balls, which would absorb water and get quite heavy in the Winter. I've heard they used to cause damage but today's footballs are relatively safe.

Oh yeah if you want a sport where getting hit does hurt, try Cricket.

Make up your mind are you talking about football (Eagles, Steelers, etc), or soccer (Manchester U, etc)

Yes he's talking about football, not american football. (two completely different things)
