Plugpoint
[hide=]Harry Potter, and Twilight. It's just stupid. Harry Potter is very enjoyable. I only refuse to read Twilight because it has become so popular right now. Seems everyone has read it, so I refuse to. I probably will eventually, to see what all the fuss is about, but who knows. Wait, wait. Let me get this straight. You don't read Twilight because it's popular ?! Not because it's a pile of [cabbage] ? This is what I don't like, people that try so hard "nonconformist" that they run away from everything that's mainstream and popular because it is mainstream and popular. That's like saying you refuse to read Shakespeare or Orwell or even Yeats because millions of students study it ! Ridiculous. EDIT: Or conversely, you like follow something religiously because it's unknown or uncommon.[/hide] Like a lot of atheists. Err, atheism isn't uncommon. It's a personal choice, not the sort of thing you do just to be different. Maxed 15/06/

Cup Lion
I have seen many friends claim they are atheists, usually to be given attention or seen as mysterious or interesting. It annoys me to no end, because I can tell right from the start. |Signature by Jason321|

l0rd
Compared to other religions, it is fairly uncommon. And believe it or not, there are always going to be people that follow something for the wrong reasons. You never heard of teenage pseudo-atheism? I've had a case of it myself, as did many other people I've seen. First off, in its bare definition, atheism is not a religion or a theology, an atheist can be simply one who leads a life not believing in, or thinking about the extra variable of god. It is the human default. I believe there are more atheists than you think. Sure, only around 2% of the world are self-proclaimed atheists, but think of all the people that lead godless lives, and don't even consider worshiping an invisible deity. The atheist population is greater than you would think. As for pseudo-atheism, this kind of conforming-to-atheism-to-not-conform-to-religion way of thinking is about as superficial and laughable as Hot Topic cults. But what do you suggest that these people do? After conquering one's teenage wanna-be'ism, are you suggesting that someone should look into religion? I myself suggest they start in the most impartial way: start back to the default, become a blank-slate atheist as mentioned above, then work from there. Zierro
Strong atheism is more or less what I was aiming at. After all, I am talking about those teenagers that usually have Christian upbringings, find out about atheism, the feeling of rebellion gets to them, and they go out and make assertions that "I believe God doesn't exist" (notice the capital G and the wording?) rather than looking into it first and actually finding out why these people feel this way... which isn't just to be a rebel. It's very stereotypical but it's a pattern I've been seeing a lot in society. Plus, since the people I'm talking about usually have Christian upbringings and are in America (not Japan) then in their point of view, it is pretty uncommon, which is why it gives them the feeling of rebellion. That's exactly what I was getting at, although I'm not saying that you should be religious or anything like that. Just to think for yourself, no matter what your theological stance is. Like stated, people like Venomai and Warri0r are the ones I have respect for because they actually do some independent thinking rather than just being a sheep to Dawkins. Of course there are some who try the more scientific approach, but it's still almost as dumb as just blindly following. By this I mean those who see the contradictions in the bible and think that this is evidence that god doesn't exist. It's not! All this suggests is that the Christian religion and interpretation of god is flawed, not that it's impossible for a god to exist.
Omar
I agree. If there's a god (and I can't be sure), as far as I'm concerned he hasn't asked me to do anything. Matt: You want that eh? Chained_life
Watching or playing baseball, watching basketball, I've played football and basketball, even though we were second to last place in football and first in basketball, football was still much more fun for me. Does food count? Potato salad, first time ever I was like 6 years old, I threw it up immediately, 11 years later, I still don't eat it, refuse :P -- Ugh, must you guys bring religion into everything? Good grief. I could never get into the atheism movement because now it's getting polluted with whiny, [bleep]y teenagers who just attack the other side and make real atheists (not false ones who do it out of rebellion) look bad. -- The Navy, Air force, Army, Coast guard, all things my parents have been pleading me to join instead of the Marines :D, but I'm doing what I'm doing, and in the end they're supportive. -- I could never get into learning spanish, even though I'm mexican, I've gotten so much crap from my Mexican peers from it all

Really? You exclude a belief from possibility based on who is following it (or not following it)? Not believing in something because it'll make you "look bad" is just as bad as being an atheist to look "cool" and non-conforming. Believing/disbelieving something just for the sake of conforming/not-conforming to a group? Beliefs should be of your own account. However, he is right about the second part - it really does make the legit ones look bad. Just like how people say marijuana isn't bad for you at all which is really bad for the whole movement of advocating marijuana. It does have some bad things, and just ignoring them is counterproductive to what you're doing since it goes against your credibility.

greenslime89
Also, if you're going into lazy sport, I nominate cricket. Even though I played it for a long time. I find it dreary compared to other sports. Also, who says netball for guys isn't fun ! Like basketball but less ... less ... You're crazy! Cricket is good to watch and play! The 20twenty games are the best though cos they have to hit every delivery. Umm... now back on topic... I can't get into: watching most sports (cricket excluded), anime, recent "cartoon" films (shrek style), rap, "graphic novels" (books for the [euphemism here]), flight sims -though I'm trying my very best but 4hrs for a flight and then you crash into a tree???? Metal - c'mon how hard do you have to hit the drums, and how tortured can a human voice sound? Also I could never get into King of the Hill, Top Gear, CSI, Star Trek and the likes. Photos!
