mozera
Worth what? Runescape can supply you with hours of enjoyement and every day you are playing, EXP you earn, quest you complete or item you obtain you get a step closer to your final goal... get the max out of it! All I hope is that I stop playing before I have maxed out all of my skills and completed every quest, because then you are done with the game... and you'll ask yourself 'was it worth the efford and time?'... and you know it wasn't, Did you progress further in your life by playing runescape? Are you happy now that you have completed runescape, happier then when you wouldn't have played Runescape? I don't think so! Sometimes I think, wouldn't it be smart to put all the time I put in RS, in sports? Just imagine how good you could have been in basketball/soccer/tennis or what ever sport you like if you had put those tons of hours in sports. The only thing '60% of the American children' spend their time on more then sleeping is playing computer games... and it's still close, they game an average of 8 hours a day and they sleep 9-10 hours a day, after those two things, sports, play music, and be with friends follow with around 2 hours a day. These numbers show us that the computer takes a huge part in our lifes, 23% of your lifetime you spend/spill on your computer till you are 21. This is NOT an answer to the question 'Is Runescape worth it?', You have to find out for yourself.

kingbrooks
Runescape has actually gained me some irl friends I might not of been friends with had I not played. Also, Runescape builds confidence to achieve goals in real life that are challening, such as achieving a 99. Runescape offers a sense of challenge and lets you talk with friends. And as everyone else says, if you don't think its worth it or fun, stop playing. Tapner
While I was thinking about gaming the other day, I was working out how long I had spent on different games and thinking about it now, it actually kind of scares me in a way. Basically, I played RuneScape for a good few years, I'm really not sure how long it was but I think it was between two and three, most of the time every day. Like I said, thinking about it now scares me in a way, mainly due to the fact, that in that time, I would estimate that I have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours playing a game when I could of been doing "better" tasks. Since I have started this post, it has dawned on me how long I have actually spent gaming and I'm debating whether or not I could of done more "constructive things" with my time. I mean, I suppose I could counter my thoughts by saying, 'you only live once' or, 'your only a child once' but if I enjoyed myself at the time of playing it, then what's the problem with that? I suppose there isn't a problem with that because like I said I enjoyed it at the time but as I have recently finished school and taken my GCSE exams, I am wondering whether or not I could of taken more time on my studies? It's also the money factor. Although the money I used to pay my membership wasn't mine, I feel that I could of used it for something more valuable. In summary, this is probably the first time I have actually thought about how long I actually spent playing this game. I enjoyed playing RuneScape until I quit around last year but I really don't see myself going back to it fully. I mean, I may play it if I'm bored or if Jagex release an update I really enjoy but apart from that I'll think I'll stay "retired." Thanks to littleboy for the signature. I mean, I may play it if I'm bored or if Jagex release an update I really enjoy but apart from that I'll think I'll stay "retired." I definitely agree that if you enjoy something, you should do it. What I don't agree with is doing something you enjoy, while impacting more important things such as school. Even though I'm not at a major point in my schooling year, I definitely could of put more effort in if I didn't play game(s) (not necessarily runescape, although it does take up a majority of my gaming time). I am currently focusing on schoolwork more than runescape, and I can see a major improvement. I believe that when I look back at my playing time, and my account once I have passed my HSC and get out of school, I'll be happy that I enjoyed myself playing a game I enjoy whilst getting on top of my schoolwork and doing other, more constructive things. So, in a small summation, balance is key to gaming, especially when it comes to runescape. If you keep the balance in the 1+ years you play and look back at what you've done, you can proudly say "I enjoyed it, and I kept it under control". So, it will all be worth it :D
Guest
Definately agree that its a fine balance. Problems stem when people just can't or won't control it. Its down to the individual. I know of a fair amount of adult players who do nothing all day but play RS or other games. They don't and won't work. Some claim they can't work but if they can play RS all day then they can get an office job. Kind of irritates me that my taxes are funding this. Sorry went a bit off topic there :? Guest
It is criminal. Claiming benefits/welfare is deception if they are supposed to be finding work, or playing games all day every day while claiming disability benefits. I'd also forgot to post before about a magazine article a colleague has posted on his wall regarding games players. The finer details elude me but it concerns some employers now looking not to employ players who admit either in interviews or applications who admit to on-line gaming. It mentions things like their mind not on the job, always tired and general perform below par. I think this is only a small number of employers doing this, and WOW seems to be the main one mentioned. but it could catch on.

Deathman2099
Sure Runescape is worth all the time and effort and the countless hours on end of gaming. Remember when Zezima was ranked #1 for what seemed like forever, well guess what........ Somebody put in the game time and threw him out of the #1 ranked player spot. Imagine being that player. The instant fame and respect gained from every person who has every played Runescape. Now the only issue is maintaining that #1 player status. You see Runescape like a lot of online games inspires people to great heights and if you stick with it great things can and will happen. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you are dedicated to putting in the gaming hours Runescape is definitely worth it, but if you expect everything as soon as you start playing you will be frustrated. I've been playing Runescape since year ONE, yes almost a decade now. I have taken breaks (some of them insanely long) but had I stuck with Runescape I would surely be the #1 ranked player now. What I'm really saying is Runescape is like life outside of games, you get what you put into it and you just have to stick with it to be great! Guest
Trouble is, are Zez and other players going to wake up in 'x' amount of years time and think 'OMG!!!!! Where has my life gone????'. Lets say for instance a player is 17 and plays RS all day, every day for 7 years so by the time he/she is 24 they will have achieved on-line notoriety and......very little else. I wouldn't want to look back on my life and think I wasted it all. But, it's their choice.

If people will kill themselves over a game which isn't all that great, they'll end up hacking into the computer network wherever they work and playing WoW. That could cause all sorts of trouble. But it should apply to all mmo's. Now this may be OT, but it links back to runescape in the sense that if you don't have balance, you are forever doomed to be that fat lonely guy in the basement (for real lolol). Cpchris
I don't mean to be a downer, but...I've thought about this. And I've decided, why is Runescape "worth" anything less than anything else in life? And I also can't quite explain or completely understand what I'm about to say but...I'll try to make it semi-understandable. Runescape is just one way of spending time before we die. What's the difference if someone played rs their entire life and someone who did other things in life? They both die and that's that. Now, I'm not a religious person, and I personally don't follow a religion (and am not atheist, God may exist, maybe not). It would seem to me that someone who follows a religion has more "worth" to their life, I guess, since they feel they have something waiting after they die if they "do a good job". And who knows, maybe they do. However, maybe religion is just an adaption-type thing to keep us motivated. Personally lacking a set religion, I really have no true motivation (although I'm not going to waste my life away), and I sort of don't understand the point of existence as a whole. People live, we do stuff, and then die, and its a cycle of life. But who cares? We could all just die and then humans wouldn't exist (as far as we know) and the universe would carry on. Looking at it like this, what is the purpose of existence outside of the actual time that we live? Again, this sort of goes back to religion... So is Runescape worth it? No more or no less worth it than anything else, I say. Again, not trying to be a downer or make anyone think what I think, but that's just how I see it. And it confuses me VERY much. AdamMonkey0
Sure, you might consider me a summer-no-lifer, but that's totally fine. Honestly, I have difficultly making friends and what not. I don't go up to a gang of kids skateboarding and ask "Hi, can you teach me how to skateboard". That's the kind of person I am. Depression is a thing I suffer from, and for me, RuneScape is an alternative for escapism. 1. There are people who play RuneScape all day, and there are people who watch TV all day. Society would deem that the person watching TV all day would be more healthy than playing RuneScape. Well, not exactly. With a TV, you change the channel every 30mins or so to watch a new show. In RuneScape, you click every few seconds. Sure, both are barely healthy, but you get more bang for buck (buck methaporically meaning time) and get just a bit more excersise than watching TV. 2. What do you prefer? Watching someone else having an adventure, or you yourself having an adventure? In real-life, economics has ruled out the possiblity to obtain an adventure. We thus escape this by watching movies and TV. Wouldn't you rather make your own adventure? RuneScape is a free world for you to explore. There's tons of things to do, and you can mix and mingle till you find some adventurous activity in which you prefer. I don't want to sit through a movie where a guy goes out and find buried treasure, when I can come to RuneScape, do Meeting History and go on a treasure hunt. 3. Can you travel to Sweden, Australia, Brazil, or Russia to meet their citizens? No, you cannot. There is a vast sea of players, with many from other countries. I enjoy having a conversation that compares how society is in different regions of the worlds. It's pretty interesting to see how another society might differ in certain fields from your own. You as a person grow from this experience. If there is so many players from a vast majority of the world, then you learn how to accept them as a representative from that society. You call them friend, when the ambassadors from the respected countries are having extreme polical fued! It's fairly funny to be honest. 4. RuneScape provides a collective society of many different demographical groups from the world. We have Christains, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Liberals, Conservatives, Capitalists, Communists, Socialists, Gift-ies, Idiots, Average, Causcian, African, Asian, Native, and the list goes on. Our society sings a harmonic tune for the world to here. We all play together and co-exist without conflict. Thus, we have a great world and the ability to call our enemies friend. 5. Our game provides a mass amounts of goals and other character traits. The fact that we aim, research, and many other thing, we develope skill traits that are important in real life. How does this help? We learn that researching is critical to moving in the right direction. Do you can fast XP or money? We aim for goals. Do I want to get an untrimmed summoning cape, or get 50M? After a long exposure to this, we can say "What is my goal? Where am I headed?", and you can credit RuneScape for that. When we achieve something, then we have the good feeling that we successfully managed our time and resources to achieve something that we set out to do. Anyway, I'm sure that there are people from other countries living around you, and i hardly think that you spend your whole time on Runescape talking to other people. Talking to someone on Runescape is vastly different from talking to someone in real life. Maybe if you socialized more you could see that their are interesting people outside of Runescape as well!^^ 4. "Co-exist without conflict"?? What?? I mean sure we might not be able to actually kill each other but people still insult each other pretty much all the time. Sure Runescape is a great world but seriously whats wrong with the world we are living in now? Christians, catholics, Muslims, Jews, Liberals ect. all exist in real life too! 5. When we achieve something, then we have the good feeling that we successfully managed our time and resources to achieve something that we set out to do.[ And why can't you do this otherwise? Why can't we just take out a maths book and tell ourselves "im going to get 100% for my next exam"? There's no difference from that to your example- except that studying or in fact almost anything else we can possibly do would be much more constructive that playing computer games. People spend most of their time on Runescape clicking on rocks and trees for months, even years. I don't see what their is to be proud about that, and i don't see how it proves that they have "successfully manged their time" either.

Erewhon2
It depends on the how and why you play, as to whether RS is worth it. For me it is totally worth what I get out of it, which is relaxation after work and at the weekends. It doesn't take over my life it enhances it, I still go to the gym, I work full time and surprise, surprise....I have a social life :o When it isn't worth it, is when someone plays 24/7, thrashes RS for 3 months, gets bored and moves on..., meanwhile their wife has left them, their work has fired them, and they've defaulted on the mortgage, even the dog has moved in with the neighbour....then RS is not worth it ;) But most of all, don't take RS too seriously! I agree, its especially worse considering that the people who play Runescape excessively usually don't even find it fun but are addicted and they can't stop playing because they need to achieve their next goal and once they get their shiny cape or partyhat and after a while they realize that its not actually that great so they get more and more and more. I honestly don't believe that Zezima enjoyed playing Runescape the whole time, but only did it for the "sense of achievement" he got which is stupid because there are so many other ways to get a "sense of achievement' by doing something more constructive. I am sure that Zezima has or will have regrets about having wasted so many years playing Runescape excessively, when its only supposed to be a hobby to do in your spare time.
