kharilswrath
I'm beggining to question Jagex's care for the younger player's safety. They used to be overprotective(when both strongholds were released), quizzing you and giving you rewards based on your safety. But due to a recent update, Jagex made it so you could whiz through both strongholds without a single question asked to you. I know this topic irrelevant, but i feel it needs to be spread. We all know younger player select an older age than they really are so they can play with all the features, but they could be giving out personal details that could ruin their lives. Thanks for making time to hear me out! EDIT: Oh and for the people who think I'm some concerned parent, I'M NOT!!!!!! I just don't want other people to get hurt. Omali
It might be the first of several updates to Runescape's security features. In Mod Mark Gerhard's first interviews, he said his first plan of action was to have a lot of the features that made runescape "kiddy" axed, and the Stronghold of Security is one of those. The Stronghold of Security is unnecessary. People generally get their account hijacked through a combination of being too dense (omg you can't say your password backwords! ******* see?) or too greedy (Look, I can give you lots of free stuff, my dad is Andrew Runescape, gimme passwerd), and the strongholds aren't going to suddenly teach anyone about the dangers of the interwebs. kharilswrath
[hide=]If someone is stupid enough to give someone else their password, they shouldn't be playing Runescape.[/hide] No what I was saying was people who give away their personal details like where they live; some stupid 7 yr old might do it. BeatleMusic
After talking with other players, they have said that if you tell Jagex that you are under 12 when you sign up, you are limited to Quick Chat only. This means that if you are indeed 7 years old and you thought it would be all right to give out your personal information, you would not be able to because you can not do that through Quick Chat. By 13 years old, I think the player should be a little more responsible when giving out their details, as you do not really know anyone you see on the internet. Gandorf61
But due to a recent update, Jagex made it so you could whiz through both strongholds without a single question asked to you. Actually I believe the first time you go through the stronghold you have to answer the questions. Then after you have collected all the rewards the questions are removed to enable players to have an easier time training there without being bothered by the same easy to answer questions that become quite tedious after a while. If players want to earn how to keep there account secure they should read the rules and handbook on the main site. Jagex shouldn't have to shove it in our faces with everything that we do just because some people have no common sense. Most people don't even pay much attention to the safety questions ingame anyways so it wasn't helping much in the first place. If people just read the rules and think twice before doing something, there safety should be fine. Pyramid Plunder Guide Tip.it Forum Rules Adventurer's LogThanks to Cowboy14 for the awesome sig! quelmotz
Honestly, RuneScape was and still is one of the "safest" games on the internet. There are lots of protection for passwords and stuff, and if you bother to read the rules or something (or just use some COMMON SENSE and the principle of no free lunch), no one can harm you really, even with the most ingenious tricks/scams. DuckyTheSwan
If someone of any age is stupid enough to give away their password or personal details, then they really do deserve what they get. I'm sick of how Jagex decided to cater to younger players, with warnings everywhere and the stronghold of safety/security questions. If someone's using the game, they can take the time to read the rules. Plus, seven year olds shouldn't be on a computer unsupervised anyway. I've never encountered one on runescape, and I don't think kids should be on here anyway. "Here" includes both runescape and the internet in general. kharilswrath
No, I am not trying to criticize Jagex it is just what i noticed when i made a new account i got through the whole stronghold in like 2 minutes. And I know that 13 under can only do quick chat but some younger kids lie about their age.

RayOxide
Aye, langer. RuneScape is not the only place in the world that has Idiots Scammers Underage players Gender confused people Emos Nerds English Portuguese Deutsch French Spam or more nerds. Ok seriously though, if you arent 13, you probably dont even know how to play the game properly, unless you're educated quite a bit in Runescapes simple factors. In other words, people in runescape begin knowing what to do at around 14-15 or 2-3 years of gameplay. It's harder for 10-12 year olds to pick that up, and 13 begins the brain developement to learn random crap like this. How to merch, how to divide xp rates into gp/xp etc etc etc, simple math really. I dont know what the hell I am going on about. But really, if you arent 13, dont play. If you give out your password, your fault. If you're dumb enough to do it, LOLOLOLOL. I dont need a siggy no moar.
iamcoool11
dude, why do you assume that people younger than 13 are idiots? when i was 12, i had a friend who was smarter than most of the high .schoolers a floor above us. And, i was no layman either -.-
Moad14
Player Safety is common sense. If someone has none, that's their problem; JaGEx does not have to try to instill it within them. I love to meet people; send me a pm if you see me on RuneScape! :)
quelmotz
Honestly, player safety is basic common sense. Just use your common sense, don't act on impulse and its ABSOLUTELY impossible to scam you. Darkblade20
Through careful observation, personal accounts, as well as accounts from others: The number of ~13-year old players who are generally undereducated, ignorant, or plain stupid.. number in the high 90-95% range. Jagex's security countermeasures do not typically prove effective as many young players, who range in ages far below 13, are able to simply bypass all restrictions by simply choosing "over 13" at the character creation page. Additionally, structures as the Stronghold of Security prove to be similarly ineffective in that knowing, is not the same as being able to implement said knowledge. Of course we've all seen players above the age of 13 make fools of themselves, but, the data is apparent. I can also safely say, since I started my first Runescape account at age 11, I have never received a single black mark, or had anything go awry with my safety. That's close to 7 3/4 years with no slip-ups. Obviously, if I can do it, anyone can, right? Wrong. It's apparent that the quality of intelligence amongst the average adolescent has deteriorated beyond repair in the last few years, with most unable to articulate a simple sentence of the primary school level. How do you expect to put safety first, when people can't even spell "bury"!? (Alluding to a fellow in Lumbridge, who upon spacial contact, proceeded to explicate his process in "bairying" bones)

Darkblade20
The problem that most people seem to run into during this discussion is the illusion we call "common sense". The fact is, common sense is one of the most dangerous concepts in the world. This is largely due fact that common sense solely relies on such: There is a high probability that people will conform to a "normal" strain of actions, or behaviors. For those who don't know what normal is considered, it's simply a median which dictates what everyone is doing. Deviation from normality, which is referred to as "abnormal," denotes a 5-10% deviation from what is considered normal, or common. What's wrong here, is that everyone is not doing the same thing. Everyone is not "normal," nor are their actions common. What may be common sense to one person, is probably worlds apart from what the next person may consider common sense. It was common sense to invade Iraq from an executive point of view. From a civil point of view, it was probably a horrible decision. That's what I mean. ~American, kicking reason to the curb: "Yes we can!!"

Regardless if everyone knows that (I highly doubt that even a majority of people exercise this advice), it's something that you should know because knowing behooves you tremendously. It's not common sense that iron ore is the best lvling ore because there are probably 5 billion people in the world who don't know this. But it is a rule of thumb when applying to runescape. Trying to make a universal RoT is like trying to make a universal currency. Eventually, you can do it, but I guarantee that bread price in the US will be different than bread price in the UK simply because of chaos theory and 1 person can through off something as intertwined as universal currency or a universal RoT. Yes, agreed. Common sense really differs. It's common sense to use herbal medicine to cure diseases in remote places of the world, whereas it's common sense to go see a doctor if you're sick in developed countries.
