Fiji water: so good, so cool, so bad for the environment?

Featured Replies

I, for one, enjoy Fiji water. I plan on drinking it no matter what.

I have a complete and utter disdain for people who buy bottled water, there truly is a sucker born every day. Unless your tap water comes out of black then there is no excuse to not drink tap water in a first world nation. Even if your tap water is poor it can be boiled to get rid of additives in advance is it bothers you that much. £1 for 750ml bottle of water really is ridiculous as well, I refuse to pay that for such a basic thing I'd rather stay thirsty on principle.

I don't agree that people are idiots because they buy bottled water. I personally have a fridge filled with them purely for the convenience. However, I buy them in bulk (8 cents a bottle) and don't support it when people pay as much as $4 dollars for name brands such as fiji.

Water that costs more than soda is evil itself :| .

Seriously. People say they buy fiji because it tastes better than regular water, but soda tastes better and is cheaper!

My entire family did a blind water tasting test because my brother kept bragging that Fiji was worth it and tasted much better. However, when we placed the different kinds in plastic cups, no one except for me even matched up the Fiji correctly (I got 5/7  ). The only way I could agree with a person about water is when comparing it to tap (but I live in an area where it smells like bleach and is poorly filtered).

What's better for you pop or water? Water. Water like arrowhead, and any of the cheaper waters taste more like water you'd get from home from your tap. Waters like Fiji water are naturally purified, untouched my humans anywhere during the entire process, and overall healthier for you.

One day, future civilizations will look back on this decade and wonder in disbelief why it was that we pumped water out of one part of the planet, encased it in plastic, then encased it again for shipping, and spent many many non-renewable resources to bring it to another part of the planet where clean water was already plentiful. It's patently ridiculous.

Best part of the article. And yes, it's one of the few things I'm ashamed of while living in 'modern' civilization. What's beyond my comprehension is why, IF your country already has clean tap water, you would buy into the marketing of spring water and spend $2+ per bottle for something which costs nothing (except the marginal water bill) at your home, school, work, etc.

It's really true, with correct marketing, you can get suckers to buy anything. I understand buying water if you have limited options and just need a quick refreshment, like while driving a car for hundreds of miles.

As for daily usage and nutrition at home if you already have clean tap water.. It's almost as ridiculous as buying a huge oxygen container and releasing 'fresh' air to your home. There is no logic and the ecological footprint of millions of people buying plastic wrapped free commodity is absurd.

Costco water ftw

I personally don't even buy water as it all tasted horrible to me. I just get massive amounts from our well. I guess I'll have to stockpile a lot for college.

I drink tap water as long as it's really cold, else it has an odd aftertaste to it. Same thing for generic water bottles though.

I really really don't get the idea of buying water when it's free from a tap at home =/

My tap water taste like crap and it has floaties in it.

I prefer tap to bottled water because it doesn't taste like anything. Bottled water is always expensive, and when you drink it it's not like your drinking water. I like the taste of minerals in my water. The minerals are also healthy, as long as they aren't dangerous ones. I get my water from a well, by the way.

Bottled water is [cabbage].

In all respects.Unnecessary.

There was a documentary about it, I saw it on the LA to Sydney flight ...

There is a handy process called distillation which makes pure water for alot less than 2$ a bottle

It also takes forever and it doesn't change the taste. Plus you can't carry a cup of water around as easily as you can a bottle. Not to mention I prefer cold water, and sinks don't get cold enough to my liking.

I'm not opposed to sink water; I do drink it. It's just I think bottled water definitely has its merits too.

Yes, but not in the way it's produced and consumed currently.

It's a total waste of energy and resources.

That's true. But as your average person, I'm more concerned about my convenience than the environment. Selfish, I know. :P

I have a hunch that the business proposal of bottled water started out as a joke. Then, they realized how idiotic people were.

No, I think they realized that water is always going to be in demand so they thought they'd capitalize on it. Wouldn't you?

What the hell. What don't you people understand about tap water =/= bottled water? Instead of giving people the benefit of the doubt and assuming they spend money for a reason (ooh what a far stretch), you assume that they enjoy throwing their money out the window for no reason whatsoever.

It's not idiotic to prefer better tasting water without floaties in it. Now, if your tap water is as cold, pure, tasty, and convenient as bottled water that's a different story.

This is why I prefer just getting a big gallon jug with a fancy tap on it, filling it at home, and leaving it in the fridge, then using an old soda bottle for my "bottled" water. Much cheaper.

Plus, if you want to get rid of the things you don't want in your water, you can buy one of those nifty filter thingies from the store. Cheaper than buying bottles all the time.

At least that's how I make things easier and cheaper for me.

My tap water is as good as or better than bottled water.
